    Lizzy's Temptation - Izzy Szyn

Morning, Violet, Lizzy Holloway greeted Violet Young when she walked in. Shoving her purse in a drawer, she logged into her computer.

Morning Lizzy, her friend replied. Long night? she asked sympathetically.

Yeah, my mom had a seizure last night, answered Lizzy. I spent most of the night in the Emergency Room with my father. The doctors finally released her around two this morning, I slept at their place then came here. Getting up, she went to the nearest vending machine getting an ice-cold Pepsi to wake up.

    Oh no, Violet sympathized.

Lizzy couldn’t help but think that if this were high school that Violet wouldn’t have been so sympathetic. She and her friends made life at school miserable for Lizzy. Both of her parents had medical conditions that often meant she had to stay home with them.

She hadn’t seen Violet much after graduation. She’d gone to college out of state while Lizzy stayed home and went to a local college. She’d been shocked when she interviewed for her current job and saw Violet working there.

The both of them worked for the local cable company’s call center, taking calls from people that complained that their service sucked or they refused to pay for the pay per view movies that were ordered, saying it wasn’t them and that they were screwing their customers.

Since Lizzy started working with her, they’d had lunch together and even went to the movies. Lizzy was glad to see that Violet was much nicer as an adult than she was as a teen and considered them to be friends. Even confessing stuff she’d done while in college.

Now the both of them were up for a promotion that would get them away from answering phones to working in the payroll department. Lizzy always had a head for numbers and had gone to school to be an accountant.

When she heard about the position, she hesitated because of her upcoming vacation to South Padre Island, but her boss, Beverly, urged her to apply. She felt that Lizzy had an excellent chance to get the position. But what sucked was that she’d go up against Violet.

Yep, are you nervous? asked Violet.

    No, denied Lizzy. Are you?

No, I know either one of us would be great at that job, said Violet.

Do you have any plans this weekend? asked Lizzy. Want to go to a movie?

I wish that I could, but I’m helping my family at an event at the Sheraton, replied Violet. Violet’s family owned a private catering company, often doing private events for some people that were a who’s who in news outlets, politicians and even some movie stars.

Who with? questioned Lizzy out of curiosity.

Not allowed to say, replied Violet. My father signed a confidentiality agreement.

I completely understand, said Lizzy, going into the browser on her computer and typing in events in the city. When she was in college, Lizzy often crashed events to avoid a steady diet of ramen noodles and hot dogs.

At first, she did it for the food, but then she started to have fun. She’d go to bar mitzvahs, weddings, funerals and retirement parties.  She loved meeting new people and often dancing with some of the people who came without a date.

Scrolling through the newsfeed, her pulse leaped when she something caught her eye. Ivory Rodgers was coming to town to announce a new film project being filmed there. Could that be it?

Ever since she’d first seen Ivory Rodgers in a small role in a popular movie, Lizzy developed a crush on the actress. Lizzy had seen every movie and watched every appearance on talk shows. She was tempted to find out if that was the event. A part of her felt guilty, she’d promised her parents that she’d stop crashing events. But this was Ivory freaking Rodgers.

Making the decision to go for it, she realized she needed something to wear and needed to go shopping. Seeing that Violet coming back, Lizzy saw it was time for her to go on her own break. Going to the breakroom, she sat at the table thinking of a good reason to take off from work so she can go shopping.

Lizzy? Are you okay? asked her supervisor, making Lizzy jump. You should have been back on the phone ten minutes ago.

I’m developing a headache, she answered, mentally crossing her fingers. I was going to check to see if there was any off time available.

Okay, Beverly smiled at her sympathetically. Hope you feel better.

Going to her desk, she checked to see if there were any paid time off hours available, seeing there was, she took it. Picking up her purse, she closed her computer. I’m going home, she told Violet. I’ve got a headache.

Hope your headache goes away, said Violet, sounding sympathetic.

Thanks. I just need a shower and a nap, Lizzy told her. And a dress for tomorrow night, she added silently. Once in the car, she took her phone out, calling the salon. Making an appointment for tomorrow morning, for the works. Now to find the dress.

This was going to be the best night she’d have in a long time. Something to daydream about while on vacation. Driving to her favorite used clothing store, Lizzy went in search of the perfect dress to wear. She loved thrift stores. Searching through the racks, her eyes drifted to a deep, ruby red dress that would hang down to her mid-thigh. It was also her size.

Not exactly the kind of thing to wear if you wanted to blend in. But it was so pretty. Maybe she should just try it on.

Taking it off the rack, Lizzy looked around to see if anyone was around, dressing rooms always made her feel claustrophobic. Tugging the dress over her head, she went to one of the display mirrors. You know we have dressing rooms, said a voice behind her.

I know, Lizzy smiled, twisting to see if it looked okay in the back. They make me claustrophobic.

The dress does look nice on you, complimented the sales clerk behind her.

Thanks, Lizzy replied. The only thing that made her hesitate was that it as strapless.

You have to get that dress. Do you have shoes to match? asked the sales clerk.

    No, admitted Lizzy.

Big date? questioned the sales clerk.

I’m going to an anniversary party for some friends, Lizzy answered, crossing her fingers in her head.

I’m surprised that you didn’t go to one of the stores in the mall, commented the sales clerk with the name Ruth on her nametag.

I love these stores, admitted Lizzy. I come here all the time.

Let me take you to the shoe section, offered Ruth.

Great. Tugging the dress back off, Lizzy went with Ruth towards the back. There were about a dozen pairs of red shoes, but none in her size. Damn, she wanted this dress.

Why not a pair of these? Ruth held up a pair of black stilettos. Get one of the half sweaters that hang to here, suggested Ruth pointed to just below her breasts.

That’s a good idea, agreed Lizzy. It will also help her feel better about it being strapless. This will be perfect, I already have a black purse.

Ready to checkout? asked Ruth. Or is there anything else you want?

I should go, answered Lizzy. I’ll be back next week though. I’m going on vacation soon and need stuff for the beach.

Now is as good a time to get them as any, suggested Ruth. All summer items, like shorts and tank tops are fifty percent off.

Don’t have to twist my arm, replied Lizzy. An hour later, she had shorts and tank tops and a big white tote bag to carry with her to the beach. This is it for today.

You got a lot, commented Ruth.

I love this store, admitted Lizzy.

Are you on our mailing list?

Yes, replied Lizzy, giving her email address.

Have a great time at the party, Ruth wished her, handing her the bags.

Thanks for all of your help. Getting in her car, she saw she missed a call from Violet. Pushing redial, "Hi,
