    Chapter One

Bethany Johnston stretched out her legs as best she could in her economy seat. The flight to Honolulu National Airport was five hours from San Jose, California, and while they were almost to their destination, Bethany was getting a little stiff. Her older sister, Elsie, was passed out cold. She’d always been a lightweight, but this was ridiculous. One drink and her sister was asleep in public. Bethany didn’t like leaving herself vulnerable like that, so she was still wide awake.

Earlier, Elsie had been giving her the look, essentially cutting her off, as otherwise Bethany would have flagged down the stewardess for another cocktail. What Elsie didn’t know wouldn’t hurt her. Well, that wasn’t true, but Bethany was intent on being a good girl, or at least as good as she possibly could. Elsie had been through enough, and Bethany wanted her older sister to have a good time.

When Elsie asked her to come on her honeymoon with her Bethany had been honored and so proud of her sister. Elsie wasn’t letting self-pity override her life. She was sucking it up. Bethany had always looked up to her older sister, and seeing her get knocked down by a couple of depraved jerks like Dan and Janice had been infuriating, albeit secretly relieving. Deep down Bethany thought her sister was relieved, too, but she just wasn’t ready to admit it yet. Knowing her sister, this was stinging her pride and rightfully so.

    Elsie moaned.

Gosh darn it. Bethany really hoped her sister wasn’t getting motion sickness or coming down with something.

    Elsie moaned again.

Mm, touch me. Elsie murmured in her sleep, and Bethany couldn’t contain her giggle. Definitely not sick.

Bethany sighed. At least someone was getting some, even if it was just a dream, a wet one from the sounds of it. Her sister deserved some proper loving. Not that Bethany knew what a proper loving was, but her sister deserved it, especially after suffering through a grown ass man with a spawn of Satan cat named Cupcake and a backstabbing bitch with a voice that made nails on a chalkboard cringe.

Bethany was sorry, not sorry Elsie’s fiancé cheated on her with her supposed best friend, and Bethany was trying really hard not to show just how truly happy she was that both of those losers were out of her sister’s life, but it was difficult. Bethany still wasn’t one hundred percent sure she wouldn’t have blurted out I object during the ceremony. She had fantasized about it so much she’d started having nightmares about it, afraid she’d accidentally do it. The objection hadn’t gone over well in her dreams.

Elsie grunted obscenely, and Bethany snorted out loud. Oh my God. She should be recording this on her phone, so she could use this later. The seatbelt light flashed on.

Aloha and welcome to Hawaii. Please fasten your seatbelts while we begin our descent, the pilot announced.

Bethany hated to cock block her sister or whatever was happening—she wasn’t one to judge—but they were almost there. Elsie! Wake up.

Jesus! Elsie gasped and flailed out as she came awake with a start, her hand smacking Bethany right on the boob.

Ouch! Sorry, did I scare you? Bethany rubbed her offended boob. Her poor baby just got slapped, but she guessed it was partially her fault. We’re landing, so you can stop moaning and groaning in your sleep.

I didn’t, did I? Elsie asked worriedly as she straightened herself out.

Bethany thought her sister looked particularly flushed. Smirking, she just shrugged. She had a feeling Hawaii was going to be good for her sister, and she hoped it was going to be good for her, too.

We’re here! Bethany squealed as they finally disembarked from the ferry. I think this is fate’s way of saying it’s sorry, because this is amazeballs, Elsie!

Bethany couldn’t get inside the lobby fast enough. After driving across the island only to find out their room wasn’t available, they’d added a ferry ride to their itinerary. Everything was so lush and green. She could smell the ocean and was ready to get this party started. She smiled widely at the concierge who held the door, and Bethany practically skipped through the entrance. The hotel lobby was stunning. It was as if they’d stepped from one rainforest right into another.

Hello. Elsie smiled at the only available reception clerk. Elsie Johnston checking in, please.

Yes, we have you in bungalow twelve. It’s a two-room suite, queen beds as per your request, and it’s right on the beach. You have a restaurant and cantina within ten minutes on foot, even faster with your cart. There were no vehicles on the small island to protect the ecosystem, the pamphlet said. Only golf carts were allowed.

That sounds lovely. We’ll take it. Bethany spoke up. She was more than ready for their travels to be over for now.

Do I look like I give two shits about the fucking minibar?

Bethany jumped when a man’s voice snapped from behind her. What a dick.

No, my Lord, another man responded, and Bethany barely contained her snort and tried not to laugh. She couldn’t help but feel a little sorry for him. Poor guy.

I know. I’m sorry I snapped at you.

Bethany sighed. Lovers’ quarrel. At least his boyfriend had apologized. If his ass was as numb as hers was from sitting on the plane, she couldn’t really blame him for being too snappy. Elsie caught her attention and rolled her eyes. Bethany wiggled her brows and crossed her eyes at her sister, making
