SIDELINE QUESTION: How did the disciples recognize Jesus?

    TODAY’S LESSON

Imagine you are preparing to attend a funeral and just before your family leaves the house, someone comes to the door and says Never mind, stay at home. The body is gone. What would you think? How would you feel? What would you do? To hear those words may bring about a state of shock! Well, imagine how the disciples must have felt when they heard that Jesus’ body was gone and He was no longer in the tomb. Many of them had witnessed His death. The Gospel of Luke shows us the disciples’ reactions upon learning Jesus had risen, and it also provides some information on Jesus’ appearance after the resurrection.

    I. Jesus’ Promise Is Fulfilled: He Has Risen! (Luke 24:2–5)

According to the Jewish calendar, the beginning of the week (Sunday) begins after sundown on Saturday and during this time, people may bring various spices to anoint any buried bodies. The women in today’s story were following tradition by bringing spices to the tomb in order to anoint Jesus’ body. The Jewish people did not follow any embalming practices, so the spices were to keep away the smells of a decomposing body. By doing this, it’s clear the women didn’t expect Jesus to rise from the dead literally. However, when they came to the tomb, the stone had been rolled away. The Roman authorities had sealed the stone at the entrance of the tomb to prevent anyone from stealing Jesus’ body, but it appeared someone had removed it. Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, Salome, and Joanna (and possibly other women as well) were all surprised when they saw the rolled away stone. The women were also confused to discover the body was no longer in the tomb. Was Jesus’ body stolen by grave robbers? Two men, or angels, appeared to the women and said, ‘Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen’(v. 5, NRSV). They reminded the women of Jesus’ message before He died that He would be crucified but would rise on the third day. Jesus kept His promise. We can be encouraged that Jesus will always keep His promises, no matter how impossible they may seem. He defeated death itself; there is nothing He can’t do! There are many other examples in the Bible of promises that Jesus fulfilled. That is to say you can count on the Lord to keep His promises. Whatever promises He makes will come to pass either now or in the very near
