About this ebook

In the Red Wolf book of The Jade Forest Chronicles, the story of Balfour and Amber continues. This time around though Balfour, as the alpha of his pack and leader for all the preternatural creatures, must consider having an heir that will carry on the leadership upon his death. Amber has no doubt that Balfour loves her and she loves him back just as much. For Balfour, he knows for sure that Amber’s love for him means that she would die for him if he asks her too.

This kind of surety in their love for each other though becomes compromised by the appearance of Samara. Samara with her fiery-red hair, icy cold eyes and the kind of power that brings back the familiarity of danger. But, who really is she? What was she to Balfour? Is she a threat to Amber? Too many questions and Amber wants answers.

Find out more about this powerful intruder (her role in the lives of the preternatural creatures and the strangeness she brings into the environment) in the Red Wolf, the seventh book of The Jade Forest Chronicles series – a tale full of magic, mystery and romance, a powerful combination that will keep you hooked as you turn page after page.

    Chapter 1 - Amber

Sometimes it took a hell of a lot of bad magic and life-threatening events to get me and Balfour on the same track again. It was, after all, how we’d met. Whenever we were stuck in a place where we were being attacked and we managed to get through it, our relationship felt like it got better and better.

After Avalon had put a spell on Balfour and nearly tricked him into killing me and relinquishing the throne before killing himself, we were better than ever. We spent a lot of time together and it felt like we were back to understanding what it really was about. We couldn’t let small things like a power-hungry witch or a rogue alpha get in the way of our love and what we were to each other.

Things were much better now that the pack had joined Balfour at the Keep. As the leader of the preternatural community he had enough magic to control his wolf, but he still needed his pack. A wolf – a werewolf especially – needed its pack. It was part of a family. The moment you took a wolf away from its pack you asked for trouble. That was why rogue wolves were such a problem.

A lone wolf in nature was a wolf without its pack – no family, but it could survive. For werewolves, it became more complicated. Lone or rogue wolves didn’t have a pack to help them control their magic, and it didn’t take very long before the animal took over. Once that happened, the human side faded until it had disappeared forever, and all you had left was a magical killer that was a hell of a lot harder to stop than any being with magic and ulterior motives.

I felt like we didn’t have those kinds of problems anymore. Things had calmed down. Chandra had her hands full with her own people – something to do with Raven and her new Stone. I hadn’t asked too much but Balfour had mentioned it after a difficult meeting with the Hollow Grove’s High Priestess. Avalon, the witch she’d been working with, was dead. The Fae had no interested in taking over thrones – they preferred to keep things as peaceful as possible. The vampires only came out at night and they kept to themselves. We hadn’t had any problems with them since Mercury and Miath had collapsed their mountain.

Whenever a new leader took his place in office the preternatural community tested its boundaries. The tests were over now, everyone knew where they stood. Balfour was a strong ruler. Everything was okay now.

Are you awake? Balfour asked, nuzzling my neck with his nose. I smiled and pulled up my shoulder. Goosebumps ran down my right arm.

I am, now, I said and rolled over. Balfour’s body was pressed against mine, disregarding the space of his king-sized bed in his main suite at Forechester Keep.

Do you want to head into the forest with me? he asked.

I pulled the covers back into my neck and moaned. It’s so nice and warm here. I’m going to freeze when I climb out of the covers.

For a Fire Talent, you’re not very good at keeping yourself warm, he pointed out and grinned. I rolled my eyes.

Sure, I was a Fire Talent, but I didn’t walk around with a built-in heater. I was Fae but I was the closest to human in the hierarchy of preternatural creatures.

I need to change, Balfour said. His eyes were a piercing blue and the wolf slid behind them. His skin burned against my back where he lay and on my hip where his hand rested. I sighed and nodded.

    Okay, I said.

I didn’t have to go out with him. I could have stayed in bed and slept another hour or two. But Balfour was the alpha of his pack and I was his girlfriend. I had to make my stand as his potential mate if I wanted respect from them at all. Besides, changing into werewolf was his life and it would be wrong of me to disregard who he was.

I rolled out of bed and shivered, pulling on the clothes I’d left in a pile on the floor the night before. My jeans were cold, the night still clinging onto them, and I huddled in on myself when I was fully dressed. Balfour had only pulled on a pair of shorts – he would take them off in a moment when he changed, anyway, and judging by the heat that was radiating off his skin he wouldn’t be cold until he’d found a place to let all that magic loose.

We walked through the giant mansion, into the courtyard and finally through the big double gates that kept everyone and everything out.

The morning was chilly, slivers of the night crawling over my skin, waiting for the sun. It wasn’t dark anymore but the sun had yet to make an appearance. When we walked into the trees I could feel Balfour’s magic. It came from him like ripples in a pond.

You can go, I said. I’ll catch up.

Balfour looked at me for just a moment to make sure I meant it. He stopped and pulled off his shorts, handing them to me. In his naked glory Balfour was more animal than man already. His skin rippled with magic and his muscles bulged like they were going to burst out of his skin. I watched him as he crouched. The animal tore out of him, telling me how long this change was overdue. When he was in wolf form the animal’s back was as high as my hip. When Balfour lifted his majestic head, he could almost look me in the face with those jewel eyes and long teeth.

Go on, I encouraged. Balfour took off, weaving between the trees. In a moment, I couldn’t see him anymore. An eerie howl sounded through the trees and I knew he’d joined with his pack. They would go out on a hunt. When they were done, I would be at their camp, waiting.

Hunts varied, depending on what they could find and how urgent it was to get fresh blood. Sometimes they could stay away from most of the day or night. It was safer to hunt at night, because of humans being in the area, but around the Keep there was hardly chance of being discovered.

The sun was in the sky, warming up the earth, by the time they arrived back at camp. I sat on a log around a fire that crackled, adding wood to it when it looked like it would die. Balfour led his pack. They walked out of the trees as men and women – naked and natural. At first their nakedness, their lack of privacy, had me nervous. I had gotten used to it. You learned to turn your eyes away until they’d disappeared into their cabins again for new clothes.

    There you are, Balfour said.

Right where I always am, I said and smiled at him.

He nodded. That’s true. You’re always here waiting for me when I get back.

I shrugged. Your life and your pack are important to me.

    Balfour looked toward the
