Chapter One: What Is Gastric Sleeve Surgery?

    ––––––––

Gastric sleeve surgery, also called sleeve gastrectomy, is a surgical procedure for weight-loss. This process is designed to reduce the stomach to about 15 percent of its original size. The reduction is performed surgically by removing a portion along the greater curvature of the stomach. The result of this surgery is a structure that resembles a tube or a sleeve, and it has become a popular choice for people looking for extreme weight loss options.

    ––––––––

    ––––––––

Sleeve gastrectomy is straightforward. It has fewer complications and does not require major maintenance after surgery. Patients who are severely overweight and have tried everything from diet and exercise to medications, may benefit from Gastric Sleeve Surgery. The procedure is beneficial to patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher. If the patient's weight is an issue to his or her health, then surgery may be an option with a BMI greater than 35.

    ––––––––

What Happens During Gastric Sleeve Surgery?

The goal of Gastric Sleeve Surgery is to make your stomach smaller. When the stomach shrinks in size, you will end up eating less, and this will help reduce your calorie intake. The calorie reduction is the key factor for fast weight-loss after the surgery. The Sleeve Gastrectomy is a laparoscopic procedure that is performed by making several small incisions and using a camera and other small instruments as a guide through the GI tract. The surgeon will then remove more than half of your stomach, leaving just a tube or a vertical sleeve about the size of a banana. Your stomach is closed using surgical staples to prevent infections. Since part of your stomach has been permanently removed, the procedure is irreversible.

People have often mistaken this process for Gastric bypass surgery. These surgical procedures have similarities. For example, both are irreversible, and the hospital stay is around two to three days. Both surgeries reduce the amount of food intake in your body, so you feel satisfied at a faster rate. The difference between these two surgical methods lies mainly in the procedure itself. Gastric bypass surgery is performed by bypassing the stomach and attaching a small pouch to the intestine, while the Sleeve Gastrectomy removes a portion of the stomach to reduce its size.

    ––––––––

What Are The Benefits And Problems With The Surgery?

Research studies have shown that people who have had Gastric Sleeve Surgery may lose, on average, more than half of their excess weight. Individuals with higher success tend to be physically active, follow the recommended diet, and maintain constant communication with their healthcare providers. The downside of the procedure is that you may suffer from poor nutrition over time because a large portion of the stomach has been removed. Poor nutrition can lead to various vitamin deficiencies. For example, Vitamin D deficiency can lead to Ricketts (weak bones) and Osteoporosis (fragile bones). Iron deficiency can result in anemia and formation of gallstones. The best way to avoid this issue would be to work in close cooperation with both the doctor and dietician to ensure proper nutrition is getting to your system. Other common risks for this type of surgery include a leak from the stomach into the abdominal cavity, an infection in the incision site, and a blood clot in the lungs.

    ––––––––

    What To Expect After Surgery

During the first week after surgery, you will experience some abdominal pain and tenderness near the incision site. Fortunately, your doctor will prescribe the proper pain medication to keep this under control. You will also get full quickly after eating because your stomach has reduced in size. You may suffer from Dumping Syndrome, where food travels too quickly into the small intestine. This process can lead to symptoms of shakiness, fainting, nausea, and diarrhea. Your body may have difficulties getting the proper amount of nutrition.

After surgery, it is very important to follow dietary instructions given by your doctor and nutritionist. During the first month after surgery, your stomach can only handle small amounts of liquids and soft foods. You may notice irregular bowel movements such as severe constipation. Fortunately, after the first month of surgery, you will be able to add solid foods slowly and gradually back into your diet. At this point, it's important to eat cautiously.  If you have the slightest feelings of satiety, it's advisable to stop eating immediately. It is also important to chew your food thoroughly to ensure easy absorption and passage of food through the shortened GI tract. The precaution is to prevent unwanted GI symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

In the next chapter, we will go over more details and dietary recommendations before and after the surgery.

Chapter Two: The Gastric Sleeve Diet

    ––––––––

    ––––––––

    What Is Gastric Sleeve Diet?

The Gastric Sleeve Diet consists of meals that one should eat before and after your surgery. Since the surgery is a life-changing event that alters the size of your GI tract, you will need to follow the proper diet to facilitate the recovery process. This process consists of various steps and phases, and each of them has different dietary requirements. It's important to work closely with your healthcare providers to ensure that you understand and follow those dietary guidelines correctly.
