Body Language - Jimmy Cooper
Introduction
There are many things in adult life that no one seems to teach you about. Learning experiences may vary, but many valuable life skills seem untaught in the modern education system, and one of them being body language.
Body language plays a vital role in communication, yet many don’t know how to interpret body language or how to control their own body language so that they seem trustworthy to others. Everyone knows of its existence, but many don’t use it or know what all the different gestures mean. You’ll be surprised at how many people will think you’re a bad person just because you didn’t look them in the eye. Do you have trouble getting a job? If so, your lack of body language may be to blame. No one likes an interviewee who looks slouched.
And despite how important it is, it’s not fully understood except by the professionals who use it to succeed. Well, we’re here to help. We’ll explain everything there is to know about body language, including:
What it is
The different parts of body language
How to interpret someone’s body language
How to present yourself in front of people
Training yourself to be aware of your body language
And more
This book has everything you need to know. Even if you’re aware of most non-verbal cues, there are some you may not be familiar about, and in this book, you’ll learn them all.
With that said, let’s begin.
Chapter 1: What is Body Language?
This may come as a shock to you, but as it turns out, humans are complex creatures that have a unique way of communicating. We use various sounds to form words, and those words convey a message.
However, it doesn’t stop there. Those words could mean the opposite of what you expect them to mean if there are nonverbal cues to accompany them. As the name implies, nonverbal cues are unspoken ways of communicating, usually by gestures someone makes with their head, eyes, hands, or other body parts, and by the tone of voice they may have.
For instance, we all know the tone of voice someone uses whenever they’re clearly being sarcastic. Or the stereotype that if someone isn’t looking you in the eye, they’re being dishonest. Even if you’re not much of a reader on body language, it doesn’t take too much knowledge to figure out some of the basics.
Body language gives a deeper meaning to the words someone may say.
Body Language is 93 Percent of Communication?
If you’ve heard anything about body language, you may have heard about the 93 percent rule. Depending on who you talk to, the number may change a little, but the message is still the same. The words that come out of your mouth mean very little, and it’s all about the body language.
And this can be true. For example, one criticism about talking through text is that we can misinterpret words. Sarcasm can be hard to detect unless accompanied by a smiley face or a note saying the person was being sarcastic. Playful flirtations can sound intimidated unless they have emojis to prove otherwise.
However, 93 percent? Where does that number come from? It comes from Dr. Albert Mehrabian, who studied communication and concluded that the message someone is trying to say is only seven percent words, while the rest is tone of voice or nonverbal cues.
Of course, this doesn’t apply to everyone. You have public
