    Language Enrichment

    • Print each child’s name on a strip of paper. Point out each letter. Ask the children to point to the first letter in their names.

    • Read a short story to the children. Point out the letters in the title of the book. Remind the children that these letters are in The Alphabet Song.

    • Show the children how to make the first letter of their names using finger spelling (see appendix page 244). If the first letter of their name is one of the more complicated finger spellings, teach them how to make the letter A. For children who show an interest in finger spelling, teach them how to make the letters B and C.

    Magnetic Letters

    Provide magnetic letters and a cookie tray. Sit with the children as they play with the letters. Help older children use the letters to spell their names. Can you find the first letter of your name? Which letter is the first one mentioned in the song? Younger children will enjoy exploring the magnetic attraction of the letters.

    Cognitive and Social-Emotional Development/Blocks

    Alphabet Blocks

    Make Paper Bag Alphabet Blocks. Print each letter of the alphabet on small lunch bags, one letter per bag. Stuff crumpled newspaper into each bag until it is three-quarters full. Fold the top of the bag over and tape it down with masking tape or duct tape. Encourage the children to build with the blocks. Talk with them as they build. Can you find the block with the letter that your name starts with? Can you name any of the letters on the blocks? Show younger children the blocks that have the first letter of their names. This activity is for awareness only. Don’t expect the children to recognize or identify the letters. Some will; most won’t.

    Physical and Cognitive Development/Gross Motor

    Alphabet Saucers

    Print alphabet letters on 6" paper plates. Create a tossing line by placing a strip of masking tape on the floor. Encourage the children to toss the plates into a box or basket. Identify the letters on the plates as the children toss them. Make sure each child tosses a plate with the first letter of his name on it. This activity is for awareness only. Don’t expect the children to recognize or identify the letters.

    Physical Development/Fine Motor

    Playdough Letters

    Show the children how to shape letters out of playdough. Demonstrate rolling the dough into balls and pinching the dough to make a design or break it apart. Working with the dough is more important than making letters. It strengthens all three hand muscles that will be needed for writing. Older children will enjoy watching you shape the first letters of their names.

    Outdoor Play or Music and Movement

    • Play Alphabet Jump. Print alphabet letters on paper plates. Spell each child’s name on the floor using the letter plates. Encourage the children to jump the letters of their names. Call out each letter as they jump on it.

    • Encourage the children to sing along with songs on A to Z, the Animals and Me CD, (Kimbo), Nursery Rhyme Rap (Dr. Jean and Friends CD, Jean Feldman), or Alphabet Forward and Backwards (Keep on Singing and Dancing CD, Jean Feldman).

    • Chant along with the Alphabet Boogie (I Am Special, Thomas Moore).

    • Discuss the vocabulary that relates to the bathtub, such as faucet, drain, tub, shower, and plug.

    • Discuss the vocabulary that relates to bath time, such as bath mat, towel, soap, and shampoo.

    • Ask the children what they think the words of the song that describe Annie Mae’s legs as toothpicks means. What do you think her legs look like? What does her neck look like?

    • Teach children the American Sign Language sign for bath and water (see appendix page 239).

    Craft Stick Collage

    Give the children a sheet of drawing paper, craft sticks, and glue or paste. Encourage them to use the craft sticks to make a collage. Draw a stick figure for the children and invite them to use the craft sticks to make the legs. Talk with the children about the craft sticks. Are the craft sticks skinny? Show the children the skinny side of a craft stick and the wide side of a craft stick. Which is skinnier? If Annie Mae’s legs were fat, what might we use to describe them?

    Cognitive Development/Discovery

    Will It Fit?

    Cut a 4" diameter hole in the bottom of a copy paper box (or a similar-size box). Turn the box over. Give the children balls of several different sizes, such as tennis balls, ping-pong balls, and bouncing balls. Encourage the children to see which ball will fit through the hole. Have them predict the outcome prior to testing. Discuss size. Which balls are large? Which balls are small? Give younger children only balls that will fit into the hole. They will enjoy putting the balls in the hole.

    Physical Development/Fine Motor

    Soapy Hands

    Provide a shallow tub of water, a towel, and several different-sized bars of soap. Let the children explore the different sizes of soap. Show them how to turn the soap over in their hands to lather up. Which soap size is easier to use? Have you ever seen the soap go down the drain?

    Social-Emotional Development/Dramatic Play

    Bathe the Baby

    Provide a shallow tub of water, plastic or rubber dolls, soap, and towels. Encourage the children to bathe the babies. Talk with them as they work. Did you wash the baby’s toes? Did you shampoo baby’s hair? How does baby like the water?

    Outdoor Play or Music and Movement

    • Cut out an arch on two sides of four or five medium-size boxes. Arrange the boxes side by side on the floor to create a tunnel. Encourage the children to crawl through the tunnel. If the children are not frightened by the thought, you can pretend that the tunnel is Annie Mae’s drain. Flashlights will add to the
