    Chapter One

O h, Brandy! You look absolutely beautiful!

Leah’s friend Brandy stood on a small round platform in the middle of the bridal shop. The white wedding dress she wore fell to floor in curtains of tulle. It had a sweetheart neckline and a tight-fitting bodice with sparkling straps. The bright white of the dress stood out against Brandy’s olive skin and dark hair, making her look as though she was lighting up the room.

Linda Belle, the owner of Belle of the Ball Bridal, stepped up to the platform and handed Brandy a bouquet of artificial roses. Let’s get the full picture, she suggested. She fastened a glittering rhinestone bracelet around Brandy’s wrist and returned to the display rack behind her, this time picking up a tiara with a long veil attached.

Brandy smiled at herself in the angled mirrors that took up the entire corner of the store. It’s wonderful, but I want to try on some more. I want to make sure I get the one that’s exactly right. I sure don’t plan on doing this again. She stepped carefully down off the platform and headed back for the dressing room. Will you girls help me? she asked the two girls on the couch.

Brandy’s daughters, Heather and Holly, promptly dropped their phones in their purses. Heather, who was the oldest of the two at fifteen, pulled her phone back out to fire off one last text message before following her mother into the dressing room, folding her arms across her chest and rolling her eyes. Holly, who was thirteen and had been taking numerous pictures of every dress her mom tried on, trotted after them eagerly.

I take it Heather isn’t all that excited about Brandy marrying Rob? Karen asked as she flipped through bridesmaid dresses on a clearance rack.

Leah shrugged and took one of the vacant seats on the couch for herself. I guess not. Brandy’s been single a long time, and I don’t think either she or her daughters imagined she would suddenly been getting married. But Rob’s a good guy, and I think they’ll work it out. Rob had lived next to Brandy’s Aunt Abigail, and the two of them had really hit it off several months ago. Their wedding wasn’t for another year, but Brandy wasn’t leaving anything to chance.

What kind of dress do you think Brandy will pick out for us? mused Alice as she frowned at a low-cut number. I think I’d be embarrassed to wear some of these in front of my parents. Alice was the local librarian, and Leah had rarely seen in her in anything more revealing that a v-neck sweater.

I’m just hoping it’s something I can use for another event later on down the road, Karen remarked. She pulled a purple dress off the rack and made a face at the price tag. Formal wear is just too expensive.

Brandy reemerged from the dressing room. The gown she wore now had long, sleek lines. The satin skirt wasn’t nearly as full, and it fell in long folds around her legs as she headed toward the platform.

It’s wonderful, Brandy, just wonderful! Linda gushed. She ushered her up onto the platform and began adorning her as she spoke. It’s still a very classic gown without looking overly traditional. The halter style top lets you show your cleavage without looking trashy. And this slim little belt at the waistline gives it just the right amount of modernity, don’t you think?

Leah smirked at the older woman, hoping she didn’t catch it in the mirror. But she was so busy finding jewelry and shoes to match the dress that Leah didn’t think there was much of a risk. Linda had been running Belle of the Ball in Smithton for as long as she could remember. All of Leah’s formal dresses had come from this store, whether they had been for church concerts in grade school or for high school formal dances. Linda was one of those women who worked too hard to be ageless. Her bleach blonde hair had been moussed and blow dried to staggering heights, and there was so much makeup on her face that Leah doubted the woman even remembered what her skin looked like. She stuffed her figure into tight short dresses that she no doubt thought were fashionable, but they only made her look like a bright pink snake had eaten something far larger than itself. Linda’s tight outfits weren’t practical for her job as she crawled around on the floor to adjust hems or lifted heavy dresses over brides’ heads, but she was undeterred.

Brandy eyed herself in the mirror, turning every direction to get a good look. It’s pretty, but I think I want something a little less plain.

Well, that’s what’s going to happen when you keep your budget too low, Linda criticized. Leah cringed, Brandy’s budget wasn’t low at all in her opinion. You can’t get something for nothing, and all of these gowns are finely made.

Mom, can’t we just go to the other store? Heather moaned. She had reclaimed her half of the couch while her sister ran her hands down a dark blue dress on a nearby rack.

From the platform, Brandy frowned down at her daughter. What store is that?

Fiona’s Fashions, on the other side of town. She returned her gaze to her phone and pouted out her lips.

Heather, honey, we’re spending the day picking out dresses for the wedding, not buying you yet another pair of jeans. We can go there another day. Brandy stepped down and headed back toward the dressing room, Linda fluttering alongside her.

Mo-om! the girl protested. It’s not just a clothing store. She has formal wear in the back. If you had ever been in there with me, you would know that. Heather hunched further down into the couch cushions as she sulked.

Oh, that’s not a good idea, Linda volunteered before Brandy had a chance to respond. I’ve heard that place only stocks cheaply made dresses from China. They’re poorly cut, and they’ll fall apart as soon as you try to walk around in them, much less dance. She took Brandy’s hands and pulled her back to the changing area. I have another one back here that I think you’ll like.

Where is this place? Leah asked Heather once her mom was out of earshot. She couldn’t help but feel a little sorry for the girl, even if she did have a bad attitude. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of it.

Heather didn’t look up from her phone, nor did she stop her frantic typing. It’s downtown but over on the west side. It’s in part of that old building that used to be a shoe factory or something.

Leah nodded sagely. She hadn’t seen the new store, but she knew the building. The White Shoe Factory was a relic of Smithton, and old folks could still be heard reminiscing about all the jobs that were lost when it finally shut down decades ago. The building had been purchased by an out-of-town investor and divided up into store spaces and several loft apartments.

All of my friends go there, Heather continued, but Mom said I have enough clothes for now.

Well, maybe you could ask for a gift card to Fiona’s Fashions for your birthday or something, Leah suggested helpfully, but Heather was too immersed in her phone to reply.

When Brandy came out of the dressing room this time, the look on her face was stormy. The skirt of her current dress was short in the front and long in the back, with a froth of ruffles. The bodice was covered in sprays of white feathers.

This gown is all the rage on the runways this year, Linda said as she plucked at the ruffles to arrange them. It’s the absolute latest in fashion.

The bride-to-be frowned at herself in the mirror. I must not be a very fashionable person, then. This is just way too much.

The store owner nodded as though she had expected as much, and Leah wondered if this was just a ploy on her part to talk Brandy into one of the nicer dresses. Then you’d better not try that store on the other side of town, Linda admonished. That girl is young, too young to know what beautiful dresses look like. She’ll only have the dresses that are the most expensive but with the cheapest fabric, and they’ll all be trendy instead of classic. That’s what happens when you try to sell bridal wear out of a teen clothing store. She shooed Brandy back to the dressing room.

Leah glanced out of the corner of her eye at Heather, who fumed quietly. Holly had picked her phone back up and was taking pictures of a glitzy
