Organize Your Life With Excel - Edward Spurlock

    Introduction

Thank you for choosing to read Organize Your Life with Excel®!

This book was written for those who already have a working or introductory knowledge of Excel® (or any spreadsheet program for that matter), but who want to know exactly how to implement it to make their lives more organized and efficient.

This book references the Excel® 2010 version, but the concepts presented will work with any version or with any spreadsheet program.

Please note that this is not a book or course on how to use Excel® itself, though there is some refresher material included for your convenience. This book intends to show you how to take your knowledge to the next level so you can take advantage of the powerful features of this program to really impact your life.

If you are confident that you already have a working knowledge of Excel®, or if you are simply a veteran at using spreadsheets, feel free to skip the initial chapters on Excel® and begin immediately with the section on the ideas for using Excel® every day to organize and improve your life.

Since a pre-existing knowledge of Excel® is assumed, there are no photographs, illustrations, or other graphical depictions in this book since they would increase the memory required in the electronic versions and add many pages to the physical version without adding any significant value to the understanding of the material. The ideas in this book should be straight forward enough for an experienced user to be able to reconstruct the spreadsheets without undue difficulty.

If you need a refresher course or would like to learn more about Excel®, you can watch several free training videos at www.UseExcelDaily.com. This website had an abundance of free training material, in addition to helpful tips, hints, ideas, and recommended resources to make your Excel® experience more fruitful and enjoyable.

It is not an exaggeration to claim that Excel® can really make your life better by making it easier to calculate, store and retrieve your personal financial and non-financial information. You may even find yourself using it daily to help run your life more efficiently.

There are many potential uses for Excel, and it is hoped this book will provide some effective ideas for you to improve your own life, and more importantly, for your own creativity to be stimulated to find yet more ways for bettering your life with Excel®.

Chapter 1: YOUR INCREASINGLY ORGANIZED LIFE

What You Will Learn in This Book

The goal of this book is to show you how to use the Microsoft® spreadsheet program called Excel® to make your life more organized and efficient.

In this book you will learn about the nature and anatomy of spreadsheets, how they are organized, a short review of how to use Excel, and how it can benefit your life. The heart of the book presents several distinct ideas for using spreadsheets to organize various parts of your life. Each idea includes detailed setup suggestions including column headings and formulas. These templates are meant to be starting points only, and are open to alteration based on your own needs and creativity. There is also a bonus section showing how you can implement several of these ideas together to create a single, lifetime workbook to track your finances and other personal information.

There is also a section on how to introduce your children to using Excel®. An early introduction to spreadsheets will make the use of spreadsheets less intimidating when they encounter them later as adults.

The main purpose of this book is not to teach you how to use Excel. There are many good books, videos and courses to instruct you the technical aspects of the program itself. Instead, this book intends to show you specific ideas on how to use Excel to make your life easier and more efficient. Although there is some preliminary refresher material before the ideas are presented, this book is not meant to be a course in Excel.

    What is Excel®?

Excel® is a spreadsheet program owned and published by the software company Microsoft®. There are other spreadsheet brands on the market to which this book would equally apply. Any basic spreadsheet program can be used to accomplish the goals set forth in this book. Excel® was selected as the program of choice because it is currently the most popular spreadsheet program used globally in business and for home use. The
