About this ebook

Hans Christian Anderson's book "The Snow Queen" left more questions than answers when it was written for children and adults long ago. How did the Snow Queen become so coldhearted and powerful? What was her childhood like? Did she once have loving parents? Why would she seek isolation in the cold snowy northern lands? Was she lonely with only her word games and wolves to keep her company? Aurora Borealis was a queen like no other. Could the love of two children break the ancient spell cast over her? Read this chilling book and find out about The Snow Queen's Life and Times.

J. G. Hampton is a full time author/illustrator who graduated magna cum laude from the University of Utah as an educator who thanks to recertification requirements has accumulated enough hours for a master’s degree from Utah State University. A survivor of both a wicked mother-in-law and a wicked stepmother who stole her inheritance, she’s trying to live happily ever after despite a few evil spells during her life. Being left handed in a right handed world, she has yet to master Leonardo Da Vinci’s mirror handwriting technique, but she has mastered being a reverse image identical mirror twin who not only survived her birth as the runt of the litter, but the birthing of three daughters and over twenty literary magnum opuses in several genres. While constantly rooting for the underdogs of the world, she looks at crystal goblets and life as being half full rather than half empty. A firm believer that one must create their own magic if one is to enjoy life. She enjoys happy endings in her fiction and nonfiction musings. Enjoy her work on Smashwords

Chapter One – The Birth of the Snow Queen

Once upon a time, King Alexander Wyncyxixesxesla XV of Wynslyxvania, a small kingdom in upper Poland, heard the glad tidings: His wife, Queen Aurora XIII, was finally expecting a child. By the way, the king’s surname was rather hard to pronounce by most non Polish speaking people, whose tongues usually become tied in a rather large knot when they try, so don’t fret much if you weren’t able to spit it out properly. Perhaps it has something to do with heredity, in the same way that some people can shape their tongue into a V while others can only form a weak U. Some people can roll their R’s rapidly while others can’t; it’s a gift which is a god thing.

They’d been married over fifteen years and the happy couple had given up all hope of ever having an heir to their throne, let alone an heir and a spare. Perhaps it wasn’t meant to be. Needless to say, the king was elated, no, that’s too mild a word to describe his joy; he was euphoric. His royal feet never touched the ground for several weeks after he heard the good news. Floating around the palace halls, he was so happy, he jumped for joy, which was rather life threatening because of his weight and size. You see, he was overly fond of crumpets with cream cheese, tea cakes, fine wines, and he never turned his mouth away from a lavish banquet. Resembling an over inflated beach ball more than a fine figure of a man, floating and jumping were hard to do, but put him on a hunting steed and his skill with a bow and arrow was apparent.

Jumping jehosophat! yelled the king. Our luck is changing. We’re pregnant! Light the bonfires! Dancing is legal this week! We’ve something to celebrate! Rosin up your bows and tune the fiddles! Merriment and mirth are in order."

The next week, he forgave twenty debtors their debts; personally danced at several weddings; and cured five peasants of scrofula by touching their nasty sores with his bare hands. Something he hadn’t done in ages, while sponsoring three orphans to attend the university in Prague in order to become poets so that they could laud their good fortune in future verse.

Obviously, his joy knew no bounds. He wanted everyone to be as happy as he was. Sharing added to his pleasures. Not wanting to shut anyone out from his new found bubble which happily enclosed him and his wife. He drew others into their joy. Would the bubble finally burst?

King’s crusties! I feel like a young stud. My oats have finally been sown and planted in fertile ground. A thoroughbred is about to be born . Will a mare or a stallion result? His courtiers and diplomats and the household held began placing their bets.

During the next six months the king kept his fingers crossed and the queen kept her knees crossed while they awaited the birth of their child. As the due date approached, his grin broadened as did the girth of the queen. Few could say which was broader. Would the queen really grant him his heart’s desire? They’d been so disappointed, no less than five times by miscarriages in the past.

Some palace necromancers said that Queen Aurora the XIII was unlucky and had brought bad luck to the house of Wyncixexysxesla. Gossipers raised their eyebrows and parlayed the rumors about as if they were tennis balls.

Saints shrouds! What a bunch of poppy cock and nonsense! We’re the luckiest couple in the entire world. said the king. My elegant queen has only brought me and my house good luck. Obviously, quality, not quantity is what we’re after." exclaimed the king proudly when he announced the news of
