    About The Author

I had always wanted to see the world from a young age – I’ve had a world map on my wall for as long as I can remember. Before backpacking I was fortunate enough to visit many parts of the world with my family and built up a great passion for travelling. However, I realised the problem with travelling with your family on holiday is, it limits your time to a couple of weeks and usually only one destination.

After graduating I spent two years working in a dreary office environment, in the London Insurance Industry. I felt too young and full of life to be in such a serious environment and I had a massive itch to scratch. It felt like now or never for me - I didn't want to regret not taking my chance. So I did it. I plucked up courage and took the difficult step of quitting a well paid job, in the heart of a recession, to do something I had always wanted to do.

I spent the next month planning, then set off on my first adventure. I spent 3 months travelling around Eastern and Central Australia, followed by another 3 months in South East Asia.

Due to lack of funds I returned to England in the middle of January, and after about 2 months living back in the bitterly cold and returning to the office, I decided I wasn't finished yet - I had caught the travel bug!

A month later I was back in Australia on a yearlong working holiday. Which I capped off with another 3 months travelling around New Zealand and Far East Asia.

After returning again I set up backpackeradvice.com, a site that aims to provide would-be travellers with all the first hand advice and experience they could possible need in regards to budget travelling.

The site and this book are about pure enjoyment for me. I love discussing my travels with people and get really excited for people when they tell me they are going. My goal is to inspire people to go, and to allay any fears that they may have.

At the time of writing this book, I am also planning my next backpacking adventure to South America.

    Should You Go Backpacking?

Travelling is the best thing I have ever done, or ever will do. It is what life is all about; meeting new and amazing people, being completely free, experiencing once in a life time moments, trying new things and above all having FUN!

All you've got to do is decide to go, and the hardest part is over.

My main advice is if even if you have just a tiny, little urge to go, GO! The fact you are reading this book shows you have that urge - do you really want to regret not going 10 years down the line?

There are many reasons to go travelling, I am sure you have your own reasons for wanting to go, but for those wanting more ideas or an excuse, here you are:

    15 Reasons To Go Travelling

Go somewhere you have longed to see.

Connect with nature, wildlife and the outdoors.

    Experience a new culture.

    Learn a language.

    Undertake an extreme activity.

    Broaden your mind.

    Try something new.

    Widen your palate.

    Be a genuine free spirit.

    Party!

    Visit an event or festival.

Do something you have always wanted to do.

    Get a suntan!

Improve your people skills & meet lifelong friends.

    Find yourself.

Will you have a change of heart when you get there?

Everybody is different, it's all well and good me telling you how much fun I've had and expecting you to feel the same. The majority of people, including me, will at some point feel a form of homesickness, loneliness or culture shock.

The important thing to remember is that this only happens very occasionally and lasts for a very short time. One of my favourite quotes to recall when travelling is; it's amazing the difference a day makes . This got me through every time I had these little doubts and feelings. You may be having a bad time for whatever reason, but the next day when you're diving in the Great Barrier Reef, trekking through the jungle or having a few drinks with some new friends, all your troubles are just forgotten. Some people just don't give it enough time - one guy I met was on a plane back home, one day after beginning his trip!

You'll never know, if you don't go!

Everyone is nervous before they go, even if they have done it before.

It all comes down to having no regrets for me. If you go and have a bad time, really don't like it and after 3 weeks come home, then at least you tried it. It will be out of your system, you know you don't like it and you can get on with the rest of your life. You've lost nothing (apart from a bit of money), but learnt things about yourself and experienced some new situations that will have helped build your character. Surely that is better than sitting at home thinking what if?.

When I first went I said to myself, "give it
