Digital Transformation from the Inside Out - Marcus Dervin

    Acknowledgements

Where do I start? How about at the beginning?

I have enormous gratitude to my parents, Eileen and Padraic. They'd both emigrated to London, where they met in the late sixties. How amazing it would have been then, yet they gave it all up to return to rural Ireland when I turned three. They figured London wouldn't have suited me, and they were probably right. That was only the beginning - and now I live on the other side of the world. Parents: they have to deal with so much.

Tanja Gardner, my editor: your fondness of semicolons knows no bounds. We discussed them aplenty: thanks for your great work in making this book a lot easier to read than it would have been.

Thanks too to Michael Hanrahan - publisher, and Christine Arigadas - designer: love your work.

To Mirelle Walker and Nectarios Lazaris from Unispace: thank you for your permission to include the Unispace project and for being awesome clients.

Also to Sava Politis, Kirsty McGrath and the team at Santos: thank you also for being willing to include the Discover project. You guys rock.

In fact, thank you to all WebVine clients - past, present and future. Without you, none of this would be possible. I am so grateful for the opportunity to run a business that serves you - thank you for trusting in me and my team.

To all the people who have touched my career and life over the past 22+ years: I've met so many great people, far too many to name. So please accept my appreciation for what you have given me. The technology industry is so exciting right now (it really wasn't that exciting 22 years ago). I'm fortunate to be part of the ride with all of you.

Special thanks to all the folks at Microsoft and to the partners we work with. Who knew it could be so much fun? I sincerely appreciate your support; you guys are awesome.

I would like to thank my coach Robert Kirby: I would not have been able to grow WebVine into what it has become today without you, and we are not done yet. You are a rockstar.

Claire Walker, WebVine Marketing Supremo: you have worked hard to get this book over the line. I am so grateful, and of course you are such a joy to work with (we all love Claire!).

Umar Riaz, Ares Liu - WebVine Superheros: your work is throughout this book, and of course none of this could have been possible without you. Also thanks to Heather Zhang, Muhammad Iqbal and Christianne Develos. Past and future WebViners, I thank you too.

Thanks to Glen Carlson, Daniel Priestley and all the gang at Dent - and to Andrew Griffiths: I imagined writing a book one day, but I would never have actually done it without your know-how, support, guidance… and deadlines.

To my wife Chloe, who sacrificed so much for me to get this book done: how many weekends and evenings did I spend with this book instead of with you and the kids? (Or just with the kids while you went out I hear you say!) Chloe, you give so much - I love you and am so blessed to spend my life with you.

And to my children - Saoirse and Tighe: you fill me up so much. I delight in watching you grow, and I love seeing you write your own books (you are much quicker at writing them than I am too!).

Finally thank you to GM, without whom my life would be a pale reflection of what it is today. I am blessed beyond anything I could have imagined, and I am eternally grateful.

    Preface

Thank you for picking up this book (with, I hope, the intention to read it). There are five sections, and 26 chapters in all. To respect your time, I'd like to help you focus on the sections of the book that will be most helpful according to your position.

If your position isn't listed below, you may have picked up the wrong book. If so, just put it back and find yourself something funny to read instead. Seriously though, if I've unintentionally left your role out, a thousand apologies.

If, however, you're an IT Professional who's been tasked with Digital Transformation and given little other support, you have no choice. In that case, please read the whole book. Don't worry, there are a few cartoons to keep you going.

Digital Transformation is a subject close to my heart, so I'd love to hear from you about your Digital Transformation journey. My email is on the last page if you'd like to contact me.

First though, you have some reading to do. So enjoy, and again, thank you for taking the time to consider transforming your organisation, it will be all the better for it.

    SECTION 1

How we work and why we need to change

    CHAPTER 1

The problem with how we work

Imagine a group of tradespeople working on your home renovation with nothing but poor quality hand-tools - rusty nails, blunt saws and dull drill bits. They'd get the job done, of course, but they'd take far too long, cost far too much and deliver a poor quality result that wouldn't last. They'd also feel frustrated and exhausted, and they'd know that there's a better way.

That's exactly how many information workers feel. Most information workers expend incredible amounts of energy to deliver their day-to-day work. Staff work furiously to share information via email, spreadsheets and shared drives that are very old technologies. It's simply the daily grind.

Meanwhile, technology outside of the workplace is developing faster and faster. In their personal lives, people are getting more done with less effort from any device and any location they like. And yet when they get to work, it's like going back in time.

Perhaps you've rolled out technology solutions in your organisation that haven't had the outcomes you'd expected. For example, SharePoint might be used as a basic intranet and a file share, but it's not the collaborative workplace you'd first imagined. Your CRM may be full of incorrect information, which makes people resent using it. And Yammer was meant to be the answer to too much email, but aside from keen users in a few business areas, is it really providing business benefits?

So why is it that these products or platforms promise so much, yet they seem so challenging to get people to use properly? Why is it so hard to maximise business benefits from them? The answer is not as simple as 'because the users resist change'. This, I'm afraid, is a cop-out. Some organisations are succeeding, so why not yours?

    Taking on the daily grind

Having worked in the Technology industry for over 20 years across three continents, I've seen and experienced first-hand the enormous inefficiencies that occur in organisations.

And as a technology consultancy owner since 2009, I've been even more keenly aware of those inefficiencies. No matter the industry, the size of the organisation or the demographic of their users - from global banks and mining firms, to schools and not- for-profits - the same challenges exist throughout.

But what if you could leverage modern technologies to make it easier for your people to accomplish their work? Productivity and job satisfaction would go through the roof. In fact, the organisation would benefit in so many ways that you'd scarcely recognise it as the same place. You may not realise how critical your current situation actually is.

In this book, I'll explain why your organisation needs to enable your people to work in a smarter way with a Digital Workplace. I'll also explain exactly what a Digital Workplace is, and why it's the key to Digital Transformation - especially when it comes to people working more effectively.

Then, with a clear framework that's based on business outcomes, I'll show you how to transform your organisation into a more productive, more profitable and happier workplace that attracts talented people.

The good news is that this outcome is totally achievable. It doesn't involve the typical approach of business cases, functional specs and tedious negotiations between the business and IT. Instead, it's a straightforward approach that yields great results across the company, from staff in the trenches to executives and the board.

I look forward to sharing this journey with you.
