    INTRODUCTION

    By James Malone

Have you been curious about what hypnosis is and whether it can help you overcome some of the challenges in your life? You may have heard of someone who stopped smoking or overcame a disabling fear after visiting a hypnotist.

More people seek hypnosis services nowadays for a wide variety of concerns. While not a cure all or panacea, hypnosis has a proven record in helping people with smoking cessation and overcoming other addictive behaviors. Professional hypnotists routinely assist their clients in releasing unhealthy and limiting fears such as public speaking, flying, driving and test taking. Hypnosis can also be a useful adjunct to standard medical care, especially with ongoing challenges that have a stress component such as irritable bowel syndrome, chronic pain and tinnitus. Stress is a major concern nowadays and learning self-hypnosis can help to improve your ability to sleep and rest. The list goes on and on, hypnosis has the potential to truly enhance your life. But what is it?

I've been a hypnosis practitioner since 1995 and the working definition I like to use is that it's a process using a naturally altered state of consciousness in order to bring about changes in your habits of thought, feeling and behavior.

You will also frequently hear about how hypnosis addresses the subconscious part of the mind. The subconscious mind acts out habit patterns and images whether they are good, bad or neutral. The conscious mind is critical and analytical and as it's name suggests, it is what we are consciously aware of at any given moment.

A basic tenet of hypnosis is that the subconscious mind is much more powerful than its conscious counterpart. Have you ever tried to reason away an irrational fear or an unhealthy habit? How did that work out for you? I'm guessing the results weren't necessarily positive, but its not your fault. Our culture tends to value logic and reason (conscious mind) over emotion and imagination (subconscious mind). Yet if the conscious mind were truly in control would any of us ever engage in unhealthy or self-sabotaging behaviors?

It may seem a bold assertion but all real and lasting change takes place in the subconscious mind. So doesn't it make sense to start there where when you want to release an unwanted habit pattern?

In the chapters that follow you are going to learn about various applications and concepts related to the art and science of hypnosis. The authors are fellow hypnosis practitioners that I have come to know, like and trust over the years. Each one has his or her specific area of expertise and I have learned quite a bit in the process of putting this book together and I am eternally grateful for their contributions.

It's my sincere hope this book answers some of the questions you may have and stimulates further thinking. I
