    Story 2

Guardians of King Amor and the Book of Fates

    IN THE DUNGEON OF FEARS

Lady Faith, Lady Hope and Lady Love cease being something full of sense and start poisoning children’s hearts, when these three sisters from the old prophecies of young angels become lack of reciprocity.

The Throne Room in the abominable castle on a desolate hill was full with the counselors of His Loathsomeness, and it could remind you of a conference hall and a lecture auditorium – but the king of darkness was carefully listening to only one of those present. A sly grin appeared on the ugly face of the wise counselor, and he made himself comfortable in his seat.

    I’m afraid I don’t understand you, counselor.

The interlocutor of His Loathsomeness was slowly shifting his gaze from one of his colleagues to the other.

Everything is quite easy, Your Loathsomeness. Every child in the world of children of man is convinced that when he believes someone, that very someone from his own side also believes him; they believe their parents and angels. Children hope that when someone lays his hopes on them, they could also lay those of their own on the others, especially adults. And when their young hearts become poisoned by the arrows of love, then their faith and hope may become burnt to ashes by the fire that makes their souls become alight with wonderful feelings, if the adorable creature that king Amor makes them fall in love with does not demonstrate reciprocity towards them.

Everything would be even too easy if that corresponded to your words, the king disagreed sharply. As far as I could understand you, this is nothing else but a hint to the necessity to destroy the arrows of love and attempt to force children abandon their faith and hope, where we have already failed.

Not at all, Your Loathsomeness. The speech of the wise counselor became like peals of thunder. All of us know that the destruction of the golden arrows does not yet destroy love by itself. The arrows only deliver that abominable poison to the hearts of children of man, being mediators between the Temple of Fire and a next victim of king Amor; but in addition to arrows, there also exist lightnings, a considerably more terrific weapon of little angels, that they have not yet been brave to resort to.

Lightnings?! The king of darkness was frightened.

Certainly, Your Loathsomeness, his interlocutor answered calmly.

Do you suggest us attempt to destroy something that for centuries has been subjected to the power of God?

There is no necessity in that. It is only sufficient to destroy what angels apply in order to evidence their delivery of kids to the world of children of man and note their own behavior.

You’re speaking in riddles. The king of darkness leant against his throne and frowned.

Certainly, Your Loathsomeness. But I beg to report that otherwise I would be unable to make you abandon all those good-for-nothing suggestions proclaimed in this Throne Room . As a wise counselor of my king, I was appointed to advise you, rather than give you ready answers, which is simply impossible.

For an undefined period of time, silence reigned in the Throne Room .

Are you aware of the existence of the so-called Book of Fates, revered by young angels as nearly the most significant of all books ever written? I beg to report, Your Loathsomeness, that the Book of Fates is also nothing else but a book. Any author, should he even be a white-winged creature serving the powers in the kingdom of little angels, is aware that the pages of the book that require editing could always be edited and rewritten.

    What do you hint at?

The angels simply describe every day of their existence and that of whom they take care, even though every line in the Book of Fates is added to it in gold ink. It’s sufficient to rewrite the lines and pages of the Book of Fates that tell about the appearance of the white-winged creatures and their wonderful kingdom, as if they have never existed.

The king of darkness sighed heavily.

Counselor, your idea is as senseless as all those proclaimed here before. It’s impossible to run away from your fate, for this is why the Book of Fates is the Book of Fates.

You are wrong, Your Loathsomeness. The eyes of the wise counselor suddenly glistened. Everything depends on where you’re going to run away.

Till now, counselor, wherever we attempted to run away – that is, whatever step we attempted to make, in order to punish that boy with golden wings and fairy arrows – we were always in a situation with absolutely no way-out, His Loathsomeness noted angrily.

The way-out does always exist, it is only that the door can be at the other side.

If I understand you correctly, your words imply that till now every step of our own was nearly doomed to be a failure.

The king of darkness became infuriated.

It’s wonderful to be able to communicate with you, Your Loathsomeness, the wise counselor allowed himself a giggle, and grinned again. You have a very high intellect.

    What do you suggest?

Do you know that our statistical materials, so respected by my colleague…

The wise counselor looked with disgust at a man in round spectacles – who was like a professor of alchemy, sitting behind a thick book with a magnifying glass and carefully leafing it through – and then shifted his gaze at the king’s face again.

So, these very statistical materials, Your Loathsomeness, tell about a terrific unfairness committed millennia ago with regard to those who could help us destroy the young king of angels together with his friends and their authority over the world of children of man. Those are children’s fears that externally always appear being the angels of light, but inside themselves they hide dark powers capable of entangling children of man into snares. Millennia ago, they were subjected to being placed in a dungeon in a tower next to the royal palace of little angels. Isn’t it the time to restore fairness?

I don’t understand how children’s fears correspond to the Book of Fates of white-winged angels, His Loathsomeness noted angrily.

This is quite easy, my king, the wise counselor literally brightened. Angels do also have their fears. Our statistical materials demonstrate that among fairy-tale characters, the richest duck in the history – the uncle of Huey, Dewey, and Louie – is afraid of becoming a bankrupt overnight, when at stock exchanges his dividends would start plummeting one horrible morning, which would threaten him with impoverishment and becoming a complete beggar. Jerry, the wonderful little mouse, is afraid that the screenwriters of his adventures might decide to allow Tom catch him and cook.

Counselor, it’s not for my listening to kids’ tales why you were invited here. You started your speech by saying that angels do also have fears; so, tell me about them.

The wise counselor appeared slightly confused.

I beg your pardon, Your Loathsomeness. If you wish to know about the fears of little angels, then princess Gloria is afraid of being awoken one morning and becoming unable to find in their cradles at least someone among her loved little infants of whom she takes care at the Kids Delivery Agency. Concerning the white-winged king of little angels, isn’t that his being enamored with this girl what makes her destiny so special for him? We don’t know that. But the only thing we can say…

Thanks to our statistical materials, the silly counselor suddenly interfered into the conversation, having made everyone shift their gazes at him.

Right, thanks to our statistical materials, the wise counselor of the king of darkness neglected his colleague’s words. So, due to them, Your Loathsomeness, we’re aware that the greatest fear of this boy is being next to his crying sweetheart that would shed endless tears when he would be unable to return her any of her little infants.

Hmm, it appears that I start understanding your contrived cruel plans, my counselor. The king leant against the throne again, propping up his cheek with his sharp-clawed paw and carefully listening to the speech of the wise counselor, nearly devouring every word. In all probability, you have a plan that is ingenious indeed.

It is, Your Loathsomeness, the wise counselor answered absolutely calmly. As always, we’ll only need to find a disobedient kid among children of man, who would this time release fears from their detention in a dungeon in a tower next to the royal palace of young angels. I hope that you do understand what the mere news about little angels’ inability to securely seal the dungeon with those who tear love away from the kids’ hearts and fill them with hatred would threaten with. In addition to their being disallowed to attend their school, little angels would also have to pay with the necessity to fight with their own fears.

Well, this is the cruelest plan among those we have ever implemented, counselor, the king of darkness nodded approvingly, and the auditorium in the Throne Room burst out applauding. But it is also one of the most dangerous of all our evil tricks. In addition to our previous defeats, we might subject to danger our best warriors.

I beg to note, Your Loathsomeness, that if a bit of fear could be instilled by me into you, then my ingenious plan is already partially working. The wise counselor giggled very loudly. But to talk seriously, let me assure you that we deal with not even mere warriors of my king, but with fears themselves.

Then how did they find themselves in a dungeon?

Those times passed away long ago. Our authority was limited. But even taking into account all the risk of my current suggestion, I beg to report that there’s nothing what we would have to be afraid of. It was you who confirmed that fears are now in a dungeon, and would it be worse for them and for us to change their current situation?

That’s a correct statement. But you didn’t answer my question, counselor.

Your Loathsomeness, the fact that angels once managed to win in their struggle against fears and place them in a dungeon is not yet an evidence of their authority.

How are you going to implement your plan? Where from could we find so many disobedient kids, when their hearts are still burning with the flames of love?

The wise counselor ignored the words of the king. In his clever mind, as sharp and acute as if it was a sword, there was a cruel plan that was being created and edited every moment; and that was so sly and perfect in its simplicity and ingeniousness that its inventor considered it unnecessary to take the others’ opinions into account. Having risen up from his chair, he walked over the marmoreal floor and the king’s carpet with the speed of a sprinter. His attention suddenly became attracted by what was the content of big spheroids made of crystal glass, connected by different pipes, over which the silly counselor was vainly attempting to apply his alchemy.

False, Your Loathsomeness, looking with his enchanted eyes into different flasks and beakers where some chemical instances and compositions known only to the silly counselor were boiling like in a volcano, said the wise counselor. How wonderful it is in its ability to prettier bitter truth. How sweet its poison filling hearts and souls is. What can confront it? He took the cork away from one of the beakers, and the entire Throne Room became filled with the smoke of the eternal irreconcilable enemy of Truth, that was encrusting every corner with itself like with cinder from an old chimney, covering even the carpet where the lazy cobra liked warming itself.

I beg your pardon, wise counselor, but you’re unceremoniously interfering into the process of creating one of my best inventions till nowadays, in addition to statistical materials, being beside himself with indignation, said the silly counselor. You might incorrectly mix the most significant ingredients, what then?

The most significant ingredient of any plan is nested within its prudence and equanimity in the implementation of the chosen strategy, continuing to enjoy different flasks, angrily hissed the wise counselor. I would even allow myself make adjustments to my original plan, Your Loathsomeness. No child of man will even be required for us. Everything will be perfectly implemented by the silliest fairy animal among those that have ever existed – the white-winged dragon whose greatest fear even without our interference is that Shrek (from the cartoon about a famous green ogre), Rolly (from the Disney’s cartoon about the family of Dalmatian puppies), and Rockefeller (from another cartoon telling about the adventures of Chip and Dale) might be more ravenous than himself.

The eyes of the silly counselor met triumphant look of the king of darkness, whose ugly physiognomy was writhed with an abominable grimace.

    Act according to your plan.

    ***

In the kingdom of little angels, everything appeared to be ready for the ceremony of the fairy wedding of prince Amor and princess Gloria. Lawns and paths leading to the Temple of Fire (where the young adorable creatures could give their oaths of eternal love and devotion to each other before the fairy altar) were decorated with numerous immensely beautiful fairy flowers, and fragrance of every even discreet little flower appeared to be outgoing from the hearts of the young prince and princess.

The witches of His Loathsomeness, who were invited to be special guests and bridesmaids, resorted to their best methods of the chemical wave of hair in their beauty salon, and their curlers made them look like little sheep that decided to celebrate Halloween. Their clothes appeared to be the vaudeville costumes of rock performers.

Their mortars appeared to be intercontinental ballistic missiles launched from the desolate hill where the abominable castle of His Loathsomeness was located, since they were arriving and arriving to the ceremony, along with the fairy chariots of the most anticipated guests in the persons of Cinderella and Snow White. Little dwarfs, who served as pages, were angrily snorting and hemming, carrying before themselves the trains of dresses of the fairy beauties who had become best friends. But they understood that those expensive costumes were nothing when compared with the unusually beautiful snow-white wedding dress of the young fiancée who was irresistibly adorable and whose natural gentleness and shyness were just underlined by the wedding dress sewn for her by Stork Mom together with her chicks and the other feathered inhabitants of the kingdom. The train of the veil looked like that footpath decorated with flowers that had to be her go together with the most adorable prince in the world. In her blonde curly hair that the wind was gently waving, there were butterflies woven; and the tiny flowers of campanula, which served as decorations, appeared to be creating that wonderful jingling that all over the territory of the kingdom was proclaiming the greatest happy event.

Gerlibert, who had never worn any tie in his life before, with the help of the young princess’ brother managed to tie a ribbon that made him look like both a wedding gift and the dowry of the bride. He looked unusually confused and not knowing how to behave, which was why he could bring a lot of fun and joyful moments of hilarious laughter to Dream, but he was accurately implementing all the commandments of the young prince telling him when and where he had to light the candles in the temple.

The witches of His Loathsomeness would be happy to give our brooms as dowry to Your Royal Majesty, explained Ms. Witch, who was the
