About this ebook

WHAT THE HELL DID YOU SEND US

News Flash: The first graduation ceremony at Earth’s new Space Academy was disrupted today when former cadet and accused thief, Hugh David, stole the very ship he was set to captain. Authorities have no idea how he breached the security of the academy and have no idea where he is headed next. A spokesman told news feeds David was desperate and won’t be able to get the ship out of the system. “He’ll be in custody within the week.”

Hope Space Station

Simone Brown crouched behind the low railing of an abandoned catwalk and watched the door five stories below through a pair of binoculars. If the Intel was good and she had finally had a bit of luck, inside that room was the biggest pay day of her career, and some well-deserved payback.

Hope Space Station had long fallen into disrepair. It was once a vibrant hub of commerce and industry but following the discovery of large quantities of the mineral samarium on the planet Echo nearer the large hyper spatial trade lanes, all but the support staff and a few hermits had packed up and moved to greener pastures. Adding insult to injury, the port had been caught in a comet storm and struck several times. The room she currently watched was in a section that was condemned due to imminent structural failure. Not a bad place to lay low, she thought. But still there was only one way in or out of this section. That was a rookie mistake for her prey to make, and he didn’t make rookie mistakes. Not for the first time, she wondered about the accuracy of the Intel. No, she thought, the Intel was good. It had come from an automated port computer that was reported inoperable after the comet storm disaster, but, had reported the arrival of a ship on the wanted registry.

He’s just getting sloppy because he’s overconfident, she thought.

She tensed as the door to the apartment opened. Out of it came a small knot of beings. Two were Avian, with their hard beak-like mouths and colorful hair. One was Oran, with the thick shoulders and jet-black skin of the former slave race. One was Ket, the small grey race that had first made contact with the human race after centuries of research. She scowled a little and clicked an image capture of each as they exited.

Then she noticed the Ket and Oran were wearing the official uniforms of their race’s naval forces. She watched as the two shook hands. She frowned again. Their worlds were at war. But before she could linger on the questions that were raised, a human walked out of the apartment.

He was a little taller than an average human which made him taller than the other beings present. His hair was brown and fashionably scruffy. His blue eyes were bright and he wore an easy smile on his face. He was strong and fit, more a decathlete than a weight lifter. He liked Thai food and preferred to drink vodka made from potatoes, but anything would do after midnight. He wore cargo pants, and that stupid grey leather jacket. It had yellow piping down the arms and the left shoulder was worn from the messenger bag he always carried. And that smell. All the facts from his file and her memories mingled for a moment. This was her prey, this was Hugh David.

HUGH DAVID WALKED OUT of the apartment after finishing his drink. The plan was a good one. All the hard parts fell to him, just like he liked it. That isn’t to say that he didn’t trust the competence of his fellow conspirators, but if a job needed to be done, he felt better to have a hand in it.

Are you up to this Hugh? asked the Ket named Imar.

It’s a simple matter of run and gun, Hugh said confidently, flashing his bright smile that said he could do anything with zero effort. By the time I land back at Mirror Bay the Nemesis will be stronger than it ever has before.

I hope the acquisition is worth all the risk to us, David, said the Avian named Brill.

Have faith, Brill. This is the right move. Besides, there’s no risk here. You’re sending me.

There was an uncomfortable murmur from the others in the group but Hugh ignored it. He shook hands with his compatriots and waited till they reentered the apartment before he turned and walked down the empty catwalk that led to the last active landing bay of the station.

Simone jumped from her hiding place and sprinted with light steps after Hugh. She had planned carefully for this part. From the
