About this ebook

WHY WOULD ANYONE POSSIBLY SAY NO

Pain surged down Dan’s arm. The orc’s sword had sliced between his middle and ring finger all the way to the wrist. A second later, the orc’s head was sliced off and Dan couldn’t see for all the blood in his eyes.

When he opened his eyes again, Dan knew that he had passed out. A tourniquet was tied around his forearm, followed by a stump wrapped in cloth. The pain was incredible. He reached into the pocket of his ragged clothes and pulled out some purple berries.

“No!” a man ran out of the woods and wrestled the berries from Dan’s hand.

“It hurts too much Quinn, let me do it!”

“That’s what you get for using your hand to shield yourself from an attacking orc. Man, did you see yourself? You had two halves of your hand just flopping around.”

Dan looked up through the forest’s bare branches, dotted by the occasional flake of snow. “How are we going to kill a dragon if we can barely handle an orc? We can’t fight it with just the two of us.”

“We know where it sleeps. There won’t be a fight.”

“Yeah but…well…it’s a dragon. If anything goes wrong, it won’t be quick. It probably breathes fire and all and so there’s a chance of that. Probably has sharp teeth, claws. It just sounds painful is all.”

“You know we have to do this.”

“Or we just go back to camp.”

Quinn shouted, “I’m done living like that! I don’t care what it takes and I thought you felt the same way.”

Dan kicked a stone by his foot. “I do.” He held up his handless arm. “A shield would be nice though.”

Game Of Immortals - Oscar A McCarthy

    1: Legends of Dragonshire

Pain surged down Dan’s arm. The orc’s sword had sliced between his middle and ring finger all the way to the wrist. A second later, the orc’s head was sliced off and Dan couldn’t see for all the blood in his eyes.

When he opened his eyes again, Dan knew that he had passed out. A tourniquet was tied around his forearm, followed by a stump wrapped in cloth. The pain was incredible. He reached into the pocket of his ragged clothes and pulled out some purple berries.

No! a man ran out of the woods and wrestled the berries from Dan’s hand.

It hurts too much Quinn, let me do it!

That’s what you get for using your hand to shield yourself from an attacking orc. Man, did you see yourself? You had two halves of your hand just flopping around.

Dan looked up through the forest’s bare branches, dotted by the occasional flake of snow. How are we going to kill a dragon if we can barely handle an orc? We can’t fight it with just the two of us.

We know where it sleeps. There won’t be a fight.

Yeah but...well...it’s a dragon. If anything goes wrong, it won’t be quick. It probably breathes fire and all and so there’s a chance of that. Probably has sharp teeth, claws. It just sounds painful is all.

You know we have to do this.

Or we just go back to camp.

Quinn shouted, I’m done living like that! I don’t care what it takes and I thought you felt the same way.

Dan kicked a stone by his foot. I do. He held up his handless arm. A shield would be nice though.

THE TOWN OF KOTIKU was just on the outskirts of Dragonshire, the forbidden province. The town was black soot and ashes when Quinn and Dan arrived.

Jesus Christ, Dan said. I can’t do this. I don’t want to burn.

Quinn raised a finger to his lips, crouched down and pointed to the charred wooden remnants of a barn. They heard mumbling from inside. Quinn unsheathed his sword and crept forward.

Inside was a woman sifting through piles of ash. She found a spoon, charred, but usable. She put it in her bag. A plank creaked behind her. She turned to see Quinn and Dan, holding their swords pointed towards her. She screamed.

Quinn held his hand above his chest and crossed his fingers.

What’s that mean? the woman said.

Dan sighed. Quinn said, Nothing. Forget it.

The woman clasped her hands together. I’m poor sir. You can’t blame me for looting a place like this. I ain’t taking from nobody. I promise I don’t work for that rotten shape shifting wizard. He’s the one to blame for this. I’m just a nice old lady.

Dan said. We won’t harm you because you’re going to help us. We’re going to slay the dragon.

Me? Well I couldn’t possibly do something like that. I’ve never touched a weapon in my life.

That’s okay. We’ll show you what to do.

I don’t know. I’ve never touched a weapon in my life, the woman said again, her tone and cadence unchanged. And do you really expect the three of us to take on a dragon?

Dan looked at Quinn. Quinn waved him off and said, Let me try.

Dan stepped out of the barn and tilted his head to the sky. Gray clouds twirled intricately around each other. The Dragonshire sky was known for its beauty. Dan held his sword high up and swung down as if to cut the cloud in two.

The woman and Quinn came out of the barn. She said, I’ve decided I’ll help you two brave adventurers.

Dan looked at Quinn. I can never get them to do things the way you can.

The woman said, Get who to do things?

Quinn ignored her. You just need to know how to talk to them.

What does it matter though? Dan said. She won’t be much help. I’ve been thinking you know. I’ve been thinking I want to go back to the camp.

The woman said, Ooh, a camp sounds nice.

Quinn walked over to a pile of ash, reached in and pulled up the remains of a soldier.
