Every now and then I had to meet with the different species’ leaders. It wasn’t my favorite thing to do – as leader of the Fae I preferred to keep things simple and away from the others. It’s inherent for us to stick our heads in the sand.

We might have been more open to change now with the new order of things and Balfour in power, but we were careful creatures and the more secluded we could live, the better.

Balfour had called this meeting. It wasn’t just a quarterly get-together. Not all the leaders were happy with the way things worked now and they wanted to talk about it.

We came together at Forechester Keep. Balfour had prepared the Keep for us so the meetings were less formal. Because all the leaders would be present, the Master Vampire Cedric was coming, too, and the meeting had to be held after sundown.

I didn’t like leaving the Reserve during the day, never mind traveling away from my home at night. The moon was only a thin sliver in the sky, offering barely any light at all and the night was full of foreboding.

Or maybe I was just scared.

I was the leader of the Fae, a powerful Spirit Talent, but I was still scared of the dark. You never knew what evil hid there and in my world, the monsters under the bed were real.

I made it to the Keep unharmed, the first to arrive, and Balfour welcomed me with a smile. Amber was by his side.

Since they’d gotten engaged she spent more time at the Keep than anywhere else. Not everyone was happy about it, but it seemed to do the preternatural world some good and it had been coming for a while. I wasn’t against the match.

How was the trip? Amber asked. She would understand my fears.

Well enough, I replied. She smiled at me and I returned the expression tightly. She seemed at home here, in a position of authority, when I felt lost and small. It was the wrong way around, but she had always been much better with change than some of the other Fae. Than me, apparently.

You can go through to the dining room and help yourself to food. The others will arrive soon, Balfour said. He looked good, too. Like the leader he was. Strong and upright, proud. He oozed authority. On a night like tonight, with all four leaders in the same room and not every one of them friendly, we needed it.

I did as Balfour said. The dining room was made up for the occasion. Thick velvet curtains were drawn across the tall windows, fire crackled in the large fireplace, casting shadows on the walls, and the buffet table against the far wall was laid out with food. The room had a very medieval feel despite the electric lighting, phone against the wall and alarm sensors in the corners of the room.

I walked to the table and my eyes swept over the food. He had gotten something of everything – a selection of meats, salads and vegetables, bread rolls, gravy, dessert. I stepped away from the table and closer to the fireplace. Despite the warmth of the fire there was a chill on my skin and I didn’t have an appetite. I would just wait here for the others to arrive.

The High Priestess arrived next. When Chandra walked into the room her presence preceded her and I swallowed.

Hello, Kira, she said. She was calm, her face passive. She was a scary sight to behold. Her black hair hung like a cloak over her shoulders, her skin was like marble and her eyes were bottomless pits of black. I looked away, afraid of the emptiness. She laughed as if she knew what I was feeling. I found some of my power and blew it out from me like a wave.

I needed to prove myself somehow.  I knew I was strong. Chandra was intimidating. I was just out of my comfort zone. I could take her if I needed to. I just needed self-confidence.

I took a deep breath and pushed away my insecurities. I was a rightful leader, I had more than enough power and this wasn’t a war. I didn’t have to be scared.

I felt the tension slowly bleed from me and I felt stronger. Chandra glanced at me as if she sensed it. She was like a tuning fork for magic. It wasn’t very comforting because you could hide nothing from her, but there it was.

Cedric arrived next. An icy chill ran through the room before he entered. When he walked through the door, his presence filled the room, pushing into the corners and down my throat. I gasped for breath like I was under water.

I glanced at Chandra. Even she was rooted to the spot and she looked nervous.

Cedric was tall and slender but the taste of power was on my tongue and I rolled it around in my mouth. He was not to be underestimated. His black hair fell to his shoulders from a widow’s peak. He wore an expensive suit with Italian loafers – I’d half expected a cloak. When I looked into his eyes they were blood red. My mind suddenly felt like sponge and I was tumbling and falling.

With a blast of my own power I managed to yank out of his hold. It was a rule not to ever look a vampire in the eye, least of all the Master Vampire of the county. He smiled at me, flashing long white fangs and I stared at his chest.

Looks like we’re all here, Balfour said, coming into the room. Amber wasn’t with him – she wasn’t a leader and stayed out of official business. I half wished she would join us. She felt like home and between all the others here, home would have been more than welcome.

Balfour walked to the buffet and dished a meal before he sat down. We all followed suit. I waited until Cedric sat before choosing a seat for myself. I sat opposite him. I didn’t want to be close to him and if I kept my head down I could avoid his eyes. I had dished food for myself but I still wasn’t hungry. In fact, with so much magic in the room, I felt like it sat in my throat. I glanced at
