About this ebook

Jah'miya discovers that Richmond's out of prison, so it's easy for her life to go back to normal, right? Wrong. What had started off as a scheme to get money to get him out of prison slowly starts to snowball into a disaster, as Jah'miya comes face-to-face with the repercussions of her actions.

Janiqua is determined to treat herself to the most expensive things, which would alert the police. Richmond wants to make it up to Jah'miya for his mistakes, but she's not too quick to forgive him. She can't deny that she still loves him, but there's a lot he has to make up for.

And Keantay refuses to leave the picture. Their secret "friendship" seems to be at an end until Jah'miya realizes only he can give her something no one else can.

But who will pay the price for it?

Bad Things 4 - Bre Simone

    Chapter One

Jah'miya doesn't know whether to be ecstatic or worried as she watches Richmond climb the steps of the building, without handcuffs on his wrists. Her mind floods with so many questions that swirl together in a confusing mass of buzzing and whispers, questions only he can answer. And she's not sure he will, now that he's discovered her here of all places, in his best friend's apartment.

The last time she saw him, there'd been a worried look of innocence on his face as the police dragged him away. She'd believed then in her heart that he wasn't capable of murder, that he'd kept his word about not being in that kind of life again. But the longer she'd allowed the thoughts to dwell in the back of her mind, the dirtier the deeds she'd done for the cash needed to bail him out, the more she'd come to accept that the life she wanted to live was just a dream. A complete lie. There was no way they were going to be able to get away from the past, not with all the white picket fences and polished reputations in the world. It was just too hard to scrub away every single stain from their lives.

They'd tried, and they'd failed. There was no escape.

Jah'miya jams her finger down on the 2 on her phone, causing it to speed dial Richmond's number. It was going to take some time before he actually got to their floor, enough time for her to explain herself rather than allow him to remain in the dark and make his own assumptions.

After the third ring, she's sure that he's purposely ignoring her... when there's suddenly a click on the other end.

    Richmond...?

'miya. He sounds defeated. Tired. There's a hint of confusion too, but anger is still at the forefront of his tone. If you're trying to convince me to leave, there's no point.

No, I just want to talk. Rich—

What the hell are you doing here, Jah'miya? I expected you to be at home, taking care of Killion. Not here at my best friend's place, he blurts out, not letting her much of a word in. If you've been screwing around behind my back...

Jah'miya feels her chest tighten; he doesn't know how close to the truth he is, but confessing to him would only make things worse right now. Playing innocent would go a much longer way until she can sort everything else out.

I wouldn't do that to you!

Wouldn't you? You were a banger, remember?

His words cut through her like a hot knife through butter, and it turns her empty stomach over. Everything starts to spin in her vision, his accusation having stolen the rest of her thoughts, leaving her speechless. Is she really losing everything? Is this how their relationship is going to end?

No, she'd come to terms with that before today, when she thought he was never coming back and she'd given up on trying to help him. When she resorted to helping herself instead. When, or if, everything comes into the light, there will be no reason for him to stay with her anymore.

It's in her dazed state that she feels the phone being snatched out of her hand, and her worry is doubled and renewed, as she watches Keantay place her phone to his ear. She claws at him in an effort to get it back, afraid that he will confess everything to Richmond, just so he can watch the rest of her life burn away.

Keantay manages to fend her off well enough, however, with a quick grab of her wrist.

What're you worrying about, my boy? Your girl's smarter than you think and caught me looking out for her. You think she wasn't going to find out eventually?

There's only a murmur on the other end of the phone, and Jah'miya is unable to make out any of Richmond's words clearly.

Yeah, she found out the rest. I wasn't gonna be able to keep that from her either. I know I promised, but you got a kid to worry about, remember? You think she was gonna stick by you if she didn't know why your ass got hauled off to prison in the first place?

Their eyes meet in that moment, and Jah'miya is confused as to why Keantay would cover for her. Is it because he doesn't want Richmond to find out about them? Or is he just covering his own ass in all the other stuff he's gotten mixed up in while Richmond was taken away?

What she does know is that she doesn't feel an ounce of gratitude for his stepping in like this. He's partly responsible for everything that's going on, and she would have had the money she needed already if he wasn't blackmailing her further.

Yeah... Alright... Keantay hits the end button and hands the phone back to Jah'miya, looking somewhat relieved.

What did he say? Although most of her worry is gone, she's somewhat hesitant to assume that everything is fine.

"That's he's coming up and got a lot to tell you. You're welcome, by the way." He gives her a dirty look, but she brushes it off. She doesn't owe him a damn thing, as far as she's concerned. He's covering his own ass now too, especially after kidnapping her son.

Fuck you. She snatches her phone out of his hand and shoves it back into her purse, just as Richmond enters the apartment.

The look on his face is still somewhat hurt, probably out of guilt that she had to find out about the activities he'd been keeping from her. Heavy, dark circles and lines are under his eyes, and his face looks a little gaunter than she remembers. He's wearing different clothes, but he has a lingering smell that indicates that it's been a while since he last showered.

Hey, baby. Richmond strides across the room to grab her up in a hug, but Jah'miya steps away from him with Killion cradled against her chest, unsure how she should be reacting to him in that moment. He looks hurt at her rebuff of him, but it's to be expected, he supposes. He's played some part in his absence.

Instead, Richmond redirects his attention to his son, the little boy smiling and reaching for his father, unaware that his mother is even upset. There's only so much she can do to keep them apart though.

"Hey, little man! What've you been up
