William is the king's best knight, sent from his homeland to defend the new fortress from a strange and relentless enemy. During the heat of battle, he's taken captive and made prisoner far from his people, among a savage and beguiling tribe of warriors.

But William discovers that these people are not so savage and not so fearsome as the man who now holds him prisoner slowly awakens feelings in him he never knew existed. A knight who has never known tenderness or love will know the warm touch of a man he once called enemy. The soft embrace of the man he thought only had hatred for him will force him to question all he knows.

    Tribal Law

William climbed to the top of the wall and looked over the parapet. He scanned the tree line at the edge of the clearing. His muscles tensed and his pulse raced, the adrenalin fueling him. He waited for the next attack. He sensed them out there, waiting, preparing, sharpening their blades and axes.

He was one of the king’s best knights but he’d never seen an enemy so savage, so unrelenting in their ferocity and so fearless. They’d seem to come out of nowhere. This new land was thought to be uninhabited. A land ripe with forests and lush vegetation. Rivers and lakes flowed within it, trees bore fruit and animals perfect for the hunt, roamed wild.

His people discovered their enemies were a tribal people, worshipping strange gods, painting their bodies in ghostly colors and screaming war cries when they attacked. Some feared they sacrificed enemies to some primitive death gods. Some thought they used dark magic in rituals involving blood and bones. One thing was for sure; they were determined to push William and his people out of their land even if it meant tearing down the newly built fortress stone by stone.

Cranston Hall was the king’s proudest achievement, a fortress keep that guarded the entrance to the largest river in the land. It was a grand spectacle of high, protective walls, reaching towers that watched over both the river and the forest to the north and massive gates that were said to be impenetrable. It hosted many companies of knights and horsemen and boasted the largest barracks found anywhere along with a chapel to serve the men’s faith.

A bird called from the trees and William jumped. He grabbed his bow and strung an arrow. His heart pounded against his chest. Dozens of men followed his lead, arming their bows and taking aim.

A snapping branch snared William’s attention. His eyes locked onto the trees and refused to look away. They were there… he knew it.

His instincts proved correct as a collection of war cries pealed through the air. Dozens of warriors spilled from the forest and raced toward the walls of the fortress.

Arrows away! William called to the men, unleashing his arrow with
