About this ebook

The eternal bachelor Detective Joe Patrone can often be found in front of a television set watching a hockey game, a rerun if it’s not hockey season, or out running with his dog Jerry, a large and quiet Rhodesian Ridgeback. If he is not on a case, that is. This devoted cop leaves no stone unturned finding out who the perpetrator is.

In this case, however, Detective Patrone gets his hands full when he is assigned to solve the murder of a successful businessman named Michael Cordell. The victim is shot in his own home, in a nice neighborhood with no witnesses, found by his loving wife Laura, leaving detective Patrone and his partner with very few clues. The only piece of evidence is a single bullet of caliber .38 Special, one of the most common cartridges in the world, which can be used in both .38 revolvers as well as some semi-automatic handguns.

If the two detectives cannot rely on forensic evidence to solve this case, it will have to take some good old fashioned detective work and Patrone is determined to find out who the killer is, no matter how long it takes. Is it the wife? Is it a co-worker? Is it a robber? Patrone and his partner Wells have long hours of police work a head of them. Could this be the perfect murder?

For those who love a classic detective story in a modern take.

    Chapter 1

Detective Joseph Patrone got a phone call at 2 am. He was at home, had fallen asleep on his brown leather couch watching a rerun of a hockey game, and for a moment he did not know what time it was. He reached for the cell phone and answered it still lying down, not knowing if it was day or night.

Patrone, he murmured. The conversation was quick. It was work, as usual, and he got himself up off the couch, turned the television off with the remote and went into his tiny bathroom to splash some water on his face, in an attempt to wake up properly. His dog, a large light brown Rhodesian Ridgeback, lay on its dog bed on the floor. Jerry was watching him from afar, knowing it was not time for a walk again, they had been out less than two hours ago.

Patrone dried his face with a towel and pulled his hands through his hair a couple of times, light brown but grey at the temples. He looked tired with bags under his bright blue eyes. Joe left the bathroom, which could use some cleaning, and went into the small bedroom and got a new shirt from his closet, and changed from the one he was in. He struggled to get his holster and his gun on, and put on his jacket over it as he left the apartment.

From his car he made a quick call to his partner, detective George Wells, to check where he was at. Detective Wells was closer to the crime scene and would be there before Joe arrived.

The address that he had been given during the quick phone call was situated in what was considered a nice neighborhood, meaning rich white people, Patrone thought to himself. It was not hard to find the right house; two patrol cars were already parked outside with flashing lights.

He parked across the street, behind his partner’s car. He also noticed the Forensic team’s truck was already there. Joe looked up at the large house in front of him as he crossed the street and searched his pockets and found some gum that he put in his mouth, he had forgotten to brush his teeth. He glanced over the symmetrical garden with perfectly shaped bushes before saying a quick Hello to the officer placed at the front door, and showed him his badge.

Detective, the uniformed officer answered and made a note on his pad. Patrone waited. Everybody who entered a crime scene had to be registered. Upstairs, bedroom, the officer informed him.

    Thanks, Joe said and
