It was March and the snow was finally melting thanks to the warm sunlight and Detective Patrone was taking his dog Jerry out for a walk around the neighborhood wearing grey sweats and a baseball cap with the New York Rangers logo on. He could hear the melted water run in the gutter below the sidewalk and the air smelled of mud.
He walked in a fast pace with his thoughts on the upcoming hockey game. The Rangers were facing the Washington Capitals away and he was nervous about the outcome of the game. Jerry, the large fawn colored Rhodesian Ridgeback suddenly stopped to sniff the ground which made Patrone stop to a halt when the leash in his hand reached its end. They were standing amongst the buildings and Joe looked up at the blue sky and the warm sun that managed to peep down on them as they were walking forward again.
Hey, Joe!
a man said that seemed to appear out of nowhere in front of Patrone, which startled him a bit. Jerry immediately jumped forward, growling and barking, to protect his master. Joe did not hold his dog back; he stared at the man and automatically put his hand on his hip, and realized he was not wearing his gun. The man, wearing a blue and red striped knitted hat with one ear sticking out backed away from the dog and into the alley between two buildings on their right. Whoa!
he said towards the dog.
Jeeze, Mouse! You scared my dog! What’s wrong with you?
Patrone said as he recognized the man and relaxed. Jerry was still barking at the man whose dark face had a look of terror on it.
Make it stop!
he yelled, and Joe pulled the leash and told Jerry to be quiet.
There now, what are you up to Mouse? Do you need money?
Joe asked the man who seemed nervous. Mouse had been an informant, back when Patrone was working on the Narcotics Division years ago. He was a known drug user and Joe did not like giving him money to feed his habit, but better he got the cash from him than him stealing it from someone else. The man was a frequent jailbird and had given Patrone some useful tips during the years.
I gotta tell you something,
Mouse said and looked around nervously, as if someone could be listening. He was wearing a dark blue floppy jacket that was open and way too big for his lean body and his jeans were dirty and torn.
Yeah? What’s that?
Joe said and told Jerry to sit, which he obediently did, with his eyes on the stranger. Mouse looked hesitantly at the dog and took a step closer to Joe.
I saw something,
he said quickly and then looked around again, to be sure no one could hear them. Joe looked at him, trying to decide if he could take the man seriously or not. They had not talked for years. A foul odor came from the man and his eyes looked wild.
Look, I’m not a Narc anymore, so if it’s drug related you’re talking to the wrong guy,
Joe said and looked at the cars passing them by on the street. Jerry had started sniffing the ground again on the patches of grass between the buildings and the paved sidewalk.
Mouse started wrenching his hands and
