About this ebook

During the middle ages, marriage by proxy was common, but not falling in love with the substitute.

Caroline has found fault with all of her suitors. She thinks she has escaped her duties, until a marriage by proxy arrives. Her future husband is too weak and old to travel. Even the nunnery sounds more appealing than marriage to the old baron.

Nicholas, the proxy, marries Caroline as a stand-in for her new husband. Nicholas, the baron's servant, must help her to fall in love with the Baron's character.

When Caroline falls for the proxy instead, what will she do about the Baron? Especially, when she becomes pregnant with Nicholas' child?

    Dedication

To my husband who not only showed me love is real, but opened up a world of magic and fantasy. Who encouraged me to indulge in my love of reading, and never told me to give up my dream of becoming an author. And who wrestled with little ones so I had time to write. Thank you for your support. I love you. To my children, Troy, Levi, and Chloe, may you always follow your dreams, and hold onto them until they come true. Never accept defeat even when friends or family doubt you.

To my fans who encouraged me with their enthusiasm and words, thank you.

    Chapter One

Outside the heavy oak door, Caroline hesitated. What waited on the other side? She had been summoned to her parents’ chambers after the first sleep. Now was the time for gatherings and parties, not closed door discussions.

The servant who fetched her to come straightway to their chambers had an expression of pity when she left.

Had her parents run out of patience with her refusal to marry? Her father had never beaten her for refusing her suitors, but she did notice their priests and other nobles shaking their heads and whispering in his ear. How long before he succumbed to their disapproval?

Taking a breath that was shakier than she would have liked, she knocked.

Enter. Her father bade her, and she pushed the door open.

Paintings, tapestries, a large wooden bed, and a stone hearth with a sitting area filled her parents’ chambers. The bed sat next to a window and took up most of the space. The small sitting room held two benches lining the wall opposite of the door. Caroline’s mother sat on one with her hands folded and her eyes rimmed red with tears. Her father stared out the window as candles flickered, and the hearth fire popped.

Next to her mother sat a stranger. His reddish blond hair gave her pause. The slightly tattered tunic he wore; showed skin bronzed from time in the sun and filled with freckles. This couldn’t be a new suitor, even if her father was desperate. He wouldn’t give her to someone so far below her station.

His brown leggings looked like they might have mud on them. Even his boots were old and worn.

Perhaps this was a new servant? Yet, Caroline did not understand why he sat on the bench rather than scrubbing the floor or some other task or why she must meet him in such a formal setting.

She’d rather be forced into the nunnery than stoop so low or have to endure another suitor who wished to curb her preferences. Like why couldn’t a woman ride astride?
