Want What You Got 2 - Jayla King

Kay
J ackie, please calm down,
I said while sitting on my older sister’s couch, listening to her yell and yell and tell her what she already had known.
How could you be so stupid, Kay. I know that you’re a whore and you do grimy shit to niggas. But killing someone? My god! What the hell are you going to do?
Jackie said, as she paced back and forth, wailing her hands up in the air.
Ok. I can take you being angry, but I don’t have that much time to sit here and listen to you insult me and call me a whore. Chill on me with that part. I have to just go out of town for a minute until this shit boils down,
I said to her.
She continued to pace, as she said, NaKayla, you gotta get out of here because if they do tell the police, I know for sure they’re going to come here! What about Xavier? Huh? What about him? What if they take him? How am I going to continue to take care of him? I’m not working, remember? I quit for you! Now what am I going to do?
she said.
I smacked my lips and stood up to get ready to leave because she was going too deep into the whole thing. To calm her nerves, I said, Look, I have been saving and putting all my money in the bank. Since DJ was throwing me thousands here and there, I have enough to have you and Baby X ok when it comes to money,
I assured her. But you don’t have to worry about Kenny or the police coming here because no one knows where you stay. I never told DJ either,
I continued. Only Trina knows, and if you can help me get in touch with her, then you can give her the heads up. Her friend—Sable—told me that she said she was at work so do us both a favor and start there.
I pulled out my checkbook and wrote my sister a check for ten thousand dollars. I was not planning on being gone long, but just in case I got caught, I wanted her to have something. Then again, I was never planning on getting caught, so I kept the rest of the money in the account, and because I was the type of bitch that remembered numbers, my account number was buried deep in the back of my mind.
I went upstairs to Xavier’s room and gave my baby boy a kiss. I decided not to wake him up because he would have had a fit if I was not taking him with me. I kissed him and left, right back out of his room.
Running down the steps, I said to Jackie, as I grabbed my purse, Another thing I need you to do is keep your ears open. I need to know what is going on out here in the streets. I know you don’t like to…but call up one of your old friends from the hood and ask around about what happened and keep me posted, please.
Alright, Kayla. Be careful and promise me you’ll pray and ask God for forgiveness,
Jackie said.
Then she did the most awkward thing. Something she hadn’t done in my entire life. She hugged me.
Confused, I said, Ok. I will, and I’m sorry that I haven’t been here for my baby. Thank you for loving and caring for him like he is your own.
It’s nothing. He’s fine. He is a very bright little boy, and I enjoy taking care of him,
she said. Then, I flung the door open, and after looking up and down the street, I walked as fast as I could. I jumped in my whip and pulled off, really wanting to go to my house and grab some clothes, but I knew that was too risky, so I decided against it.
I called Gerald, the owner-landlord of the condos next. Hey, Gerald. It’s NaKayla. I had a family emergency and needed to go out of town for a few weeks. I’m also kind of strapped for cash. I need to borrow some money.
He got to whining in my ear and said, Kay, what’s this? You don’t call or see me in months. You’ve some nerves, calling and asking for money.
I said, I’ve been busy with working and been taking care of my son.
This was a complete lie, but he did not need to know that I was not taking care of my son. He also didn’t need to know I was too busy fucking and sucking other niggas to keep the money flowing into my bank account.
He reluctantly said, Ok. I’ll throw ya some cash.
I said, I’m not going to be at you, but you can meet me at a hotel off the freeway. As soon as I get to it, I’ll call you.
I was glad that I still had the chance to sweet talk this sucker into giving me money—even after I hoed his ass for months. It was getting dark, so I took the risk to go to the nearest hotel I could find near the freeway. I just needed to get my cash and get out of dodge.
