    Chapter One

Death, a sad word. How Rebecca missed her parents! But she dismissed the disquieting emotions and chose instead to be hopeful; hopeful of a happy life in the years to come.

It had been the tragically early death of her dear Papa that had left her alone and with little to support herself with. Thankfully, as the daughter of the local Schoolmaster she had enjoyed the privilege of a good education, and so becoming a governess had seemed a most logical step. Now, after eight years, she could feel her role had changed.

Reflecting upon her life, Rebecca realized how grateful she was that her parents had gifted to her a means of supporting herself by teaching her the importance of hard work and a strong sense of independence.

After her Mama had joined her Papa in death, Rebecca had come to live with her uncle’s family, but from the beginning she had felt unwelcome. She knew they had only taken her in because they considered it their duty. She was, after all, family. However, both her aunt and uncle never missed an opportunity to remind her of her status. Rebecca never declined a request, never argued and never questioned her uncle’s authority. And yet, to this day he had never looked at her with affection, nor had her aunt.

All her life Rebecca had a dream. A family, a good man, and a house. In many ways this was her dream. Maybe one day she would have her real dream come true but for now she was happy to work hard, and to save some money and to live as much of the dream as she could.

    ***

Rebecca sat in the room. She cherished these rare moments of solitude. So much of her life was taken up with caring for twelve year old Jack and fourteen year old Margaret. They were lovely children, but boisterous and rarely sat still for a moment. But they would have no need of her soon enough and she wondered if she would ever find a position that was so amenable when the time came.

A newspaper sat on the table to her side, and she picked it up surprised to find that it was the Matrimonial Times. She was about to put the newspaper down when she caught sight of an advertisement that seemed completely unusual, though she only had this morning’s perusal of the publication to judge.

She read it once, then again, and again: Lonely widower rancher with three children seeks lovely lady who is kind, intelligent, and strong.  Must like children and should be able to do some cooking.  I’m a hard worker and also like to have fun. The name listed was Adam Hudson from Hudson County, Montana.  She felt sympathetic toward the gentleman because he had lost his wife and was trying to be a father and earn a living at the same time.

This union would never be about love, and couldn’t be, because his heart was shut off to ever loving again. What he needed was a strong woman, both physically and mentally. He needed someone with faith and vision.

Rebecca read the advertisement several times, growing excited with every read. She was sure that it would have been unlikely to catch the eye of many women, who seemed to want romance more than the things that would truly last.

Not that she thought marriage should be a mercenary act, but a good home and friendship would stand a couple in far better stead than hearts and flowers she was sure. Yet, for some reason the words resonated within her, and she felt a brief flutter of excitement deep in her belly.

Hardly believing that she was doing so, with her curiosity getting the better of her, she began to pen a letter to the mysterious man who had put himself unwittingly into her line of sight.

She scribbled hastily, barely heeding a word she wrote, and then sealed her missive in an envelope and addressed it
