    One

Hurry up, Jerry, I’ got to say this spell at midnight, Nicky walked fast as he turned toward Jerry trailing a half step behind him and to one side, the two boys were inside the city graveyard, crosses and marker all around them, the big full moon bright and yellow above them lighting the dark path.

How did you manage to get the magic spells book from Jimmy? It looks like one of his special books, Jerry wondered and worried as he caught up and lined up with Nicky keeping step with his fast pace.

Never mind, Jerry. I got it and boy is Mary Alice Jacobson gon’a be surprised when school start after our summer holidays, Nick smiled, the heavy black book wrapped in his hand and swung at his side as he walked, patches of whiling dust popping up from under their overused shoes and from the hard steps.

Nicky would conjure up a zombie and send it to straighten out Riley Dobs. Riley had showed up Nick in school and bullied him no less within eye sight of Mary Alice Jacobson, a blue eyed blond he had taken a shine to. That would do it. Once the zombie under his command visited Riley Dobs he would give him the z sign for zombie and Riley would back down. Nicky smiled as he fantasized about the set up. He knew Riley Dobs would think twice before bulling him again and he would make sure Riley kept away from Mary Alice, zombies can do that Nicky said quietly.

There! Nicky pointed his right index finger. Follow me, Jerry!

The two boys approached a large stone slab and grave marker, one Nicky could use to set up the black book of spells and use the large grave maker like an altar. He placed the required lighted candle according to the book’s instructions and placed them in a container to block the wind and for better light he used his father’s directional flashlight to light up the small area and the pages of the black book for conjuring the zombie spell.

Are you sure you want to do this, Nicky? That book has lots of zombie spells and I don’t know which one is best, Jerry was beginning to show worry; he did not think Nicky would conjure up a zombie from a book that didn’t belong to him.

If Jimmy can do it, so can I. Besides, I can read just as good as Jimmy and I’ve seen him work magic. Nicky smiled as he fantasized on how the zombie would slap Riley Dobs around, that would teach Riley to mess with him.

The mysterious bright yellow moon light provided powerful illumination on the makeshift altar and graveyard as the two boys stared at each other, Nicky checked his wristwatch.

It’s time to start. Every time I say the magic words, zombie come forth, do my bidding, you repeat the words, Jerry. The book says it will give more power to the spell that way. Did you get the chicken blood like I told you, Jerry? Nick was opening the zombie black book. He wasn’t sure if it tingled or his nerves were overworking him.

No, we don’t have chicken blood and Mr. Trent was sitting on his porch watching the chicken coup. He saw me walking by and told me not go into the yard because he was waiting to shoot a no good opossum that had killed several of his prized chickens, but look, Jerry pulled out a small bottle with red liquid. I managed to squeezed out some blood from the steaks my mom bought for the Saturday barbecue, Jerry smiled and gave the bottle to Nicky, he had put a little water in it to make more blood and added a few drops of red food color die to make it look creepy.

Ok, set. Nicky outstretched his arms over the black book of spells and propped it up with a broken log he found near the rectangular granite stone slab serving as a conjuring altar.

Just then the wind blew, a wolf howled, and the clouds cleared in the star studded sky, the moon appeared frightening and larger than before. The two boys froze, their eyes widened then Nick said, Ready? and Jerry nodded a yes, he couldn’t say the word.

Remembering Jimmy and his conjuring performance at school Nicky raised his hands, he looked at the luminous full moon, his focus turned to the black book of zombie spells and the zombie conjuring page, he turned one last time to Jerry who stood like a solid stone, his face tense from fear and his eyes following Nicky’s every move.

Then Nick began to read the zombie conjuring spell, From the deeps of mystery and from the sealed walls beyond life and beyond the dead I call upon you to animate the bodies and bring forth the zombies. Come forth zombies,… And he repeated the words, ‘come forth zombies’ six times and Jerry repeated the words after Nicky as instructed Come forth zombies to the world of the living.

From nowhere the sky darkened, an ominous and cloud blocked the moon, it was a blackish sheet in the sky that appeared from nowhere, and the earth and the ground under the two boys trembled and lightning hit all over the graveyards as the ground trembled all around them in the graveyard.

Oh no! yelled Nicky, the wind must’ve turned the pages. This spell is to bring forth all of the dead ones and make the zombies come from everywhere."

What in blazing hellfire have you done, Nicky? Jerry looked pale and frightened.

I don’t know, the page, Nicky looked stunned, the page doesn’t tell about that, only the other one, for one zombie, it said how to conjure up a zombie for one night and it would return it to the grave before daylight, Nicky looked around. All the graves were opening, dirt around graves and grassy areas moved, and dust flew and floated from old and new grave sites.

From a distance they heard a loud voice, Hey, there, boys, what are you doing here? It was the night watchman, he had arrived late and noticed the light in the center of the cemetery and rushed to check it out.

You think we should tell him what we did, Nicky? Maybe he can help us, Jerry stood with his hand resting on the cold stone slab, the magic book, The Black Book of Zombie Spells," inches from his hand. It tingled from the magic power that came from it.

Nicky looked at Jerry then towards the night watchman. Before the night watchman reached half way near them he was attacked by two savage killing zombies and they were quickly joined by more flesh tearing zombies that had risen from their graves. It was too much for the middle school aged boys and Nicky grabbed his father’s flashlight and yelled to Jerry, "Run, we have to get out of here before the zombies see us, but it was too late, several rotted corpuses, live zombies, were headed their way and the boys ran from the graveyard stone toward the main gate as fast as possible hoping to leave the zombies behind.

Quick, Jerry! Close the gate, lock it, now run!

The two boys ran like frightened rabbits and there was just one place to go and that was to find Jimmy Magic and seek his insightful help. After all he had supernatural powers.

Jimmy, Jimmy, help us! the boys yelled as they reached the front door and house where Jimmy Magic lived.

Within a few tense and terrifying
