About this ebook
A flirtatious, scoundrel of a wizard. An ancient prophecy. Dark visions hinting at things to come. And a calling to protect the world.
Twenty-three-year-old Eaparius believes he is the most gifted Wizard of his age — even if he does like using his skills to charm the ladies or win games of chance.
Chosen to attend a legendary school to advance as an Elementalist, he strives to overcome his reputation and prove his skills.
But when he's stuck by a mysterious ailment which leaves him with debilitating and terrifying visions, Eaparius questions his sanity and even his life. How can he stand at the top of his class when he's constantly worried about falling down dead?
Leaving behind all he's ever wanted to join the line of Watchers -- the keeper of secret histories and one of the protectors against evils long forgotten -- can Eaparius unravel the mystery of the dark visions and help shape the destiny of the world before it falls into darkness?

To my son, Deven — this book simply would not exist without you and your huge imagination. You cheered me on and gave the green-light to ideas, and your art and maps are incredible. (yes, I may be biased… but you are awesome!)

Friends… true friends, can be hard to come by at times. But, I daresay, those which are the truest are never far away from us in every sense that matters.

Chapter One
A picture containing icon Description automatically generatedYou would do well to pay more attention, Eaparius.
The woman with graying hair looked at him sternly over her glasses.
The dark-haired young man sat fidgeting in his chair, and pulling at a loose thread from his robe.
Yes, ma’am, Master Vossin.
Eaparius shifted his attention from the thread to the grim-looking woman sitting across the table.
As I was saying, you are a gifted Elementalist, somehow at the top of your class. This is a great honor to be selected to continue your studies at the Temple of Skye at Arcaena.
She looked up from the parchment, shaking her head.
Mayhap you can find it in you to take it seriously and not waste this opportunity?
Master Vossin said, with a hard stare.
Yes, Master Vossin. I will try.
He gave his best attempt at looking humbled, but he was not sure she bought the act.
She let out a great sigh. Very well. Off with you. Prepare your belongings. In a fortnight, you will travel to Arcaena.
Eaparius stood, glad to be freed from Master Vossin’s office. She was a tough teacher, everyone said so, he would be glad to be leaving the school here in Ansivald.
Maybe at the Temple they’ll have classes up to my level, he thought as he walked out into the bright sunny day.
He walked through the Commerce District in Ansivald, stopping at some of the shops, but he was more interested in heading to the tavern. One server there was a blond girl, about his age, and the daughter of the tavern keep. Of course, there were several taverns and inns that Eaparius liked to frequent for that same reason.
Marin, you will miss me once I set off to Arcaena and become a famous Wizard.
Eaparius gave a lopsided grin to the young woman.
Maybe, but I suspect I’m not the only one,
Marin set down his plate and a mug of tea, before rolling her eyes and walking back to the kitchens, with a bit of extra bounce in her step.
He liked to show off to the ladies. Whether with a fireball in his hand, or mussing their hair with a gust of wind, he was no stranger to most of the young ladies in the city.
Here you are, high and mighty Wizard, sir. Some snacks for later in the Tower. Will we see you tomorrow, then?
Marin smiled.
Oh, I cannot say for certainty, Marin. See, I must prepare for my long journey to join the Master Wizards at the Temple of Skye in Arcaena. Mayhap you have missed your chance to make an honest Wizard of me,
Eaparius said with a wink.
Whatever shall I do?
Marin laughed, turning to go back into the kitchens.

I can’t believe they’re sending you to Skye.
Beck shook his head.
Beck had been Eaparius’s friend and dorm mate since they started at the school in Ansivald several years before. He was not close to the talent that Eaparius had, and he knew it, but was gifted in his own right.
You wound me, Beck.
Eaparius feigned hurt, his hand over his heart.
Right. You’re always sneaking about, getting into trouble, and they’re sending you?
Eaparius laughed. I recall you being there for most of those sneaking abouts, and more than a few of the trouble-makings.
Well, yes, but this isn’t about me, now is it?
Beck threw his cloak at Eaparius.
True, it is all about me.
Eaparius winked, shoving more of his robes into the chest.
It always is, friend. Have you said goodbye to all your lady-friends, then? I’ll have to keep Marin company for you.
Hah, I have no doubt that you will, Beck.
Standing, he grasped Beck’s wrist for a firm handshake.
Come see us soon, before you get too famous and popular to remember us.
Beck laughed.
No worries, my friend, I will have to come back soon, if only to gloat. Now, I have to go see Vossin before I leave.
Eaparius sighed.

Eaparius lightly knocked on the door before pushing it open. Master Vossin, you wished to see me before I left?
Yes. Please, sit.
She motioned to the chair, the one he had grown accustomed to sitting in when visiting her office.
Pinching the bridge of her nose, she set her glasses on the table.
Eaparius, I hope you realize what an honor this is to be chosen for Skye.
Vossin looked at him, folding her hands on the table.
I do, Master Vossin. I won’t let you down.
She nodded. I expect not. You are extraordinarily gifted, but you waste your gift flirting with girls and trying to win at games of chance around the city. Your gifts were not granted to you for your personal gain.
Vossin stood, walking around the desk, taking a seat next to Eaparius.
You should know your records, in full, I might add, were sent to Skye ahead of you. It was only with your exceptional skills and a letter I sent on your behalf, which caused them to accept you.
For once, Eaparius was not sure what to say. He nodded, keeping silent.
Your skill is not in question, Eaparius. Your behavior, well, that is another matter. You and I have often not seen eye-to-eye, but I’ve always known you could turn into a great Elementalist. The Masters at Skye, and I daresay the Council themselves, will not tolerate foolishness.
Vossin stared at Eaparius levelly, nodding.
Good, I think we understand one another. Now, if you have everything prepared to leave, go on to the portal room, they are expecting you.
Eaparius stood. Master Vossin?
She put her glasses back on, looking at him over the rim.
Thank you, Master Vossin. I will not let you down.
He bowed his head to her and left the room.
Master Vossin shook her head smiling. That boy is either going to be great, or burn Skye Temple down trying to impress a girl.

Chapter Two
A picture containing icon Description automatically generatedWelcome, young wizard. You must be Eaparius Emeric?
Eaparius nodded to the man in the gray robes. I am, sir.
The man’s dark eyes surveyed him. Very well, let us get you to the Temple.
Eaparius followed the Wizard from the building, getting his first view of the city of Arcaena. Much smaller than Ansivald, but with a larger population of magick-aligned residents, if his first glance was an indication.
You may visit Arcaena once your first quarter at the Temple is completed. Neophytes must attain rank before they are granted permission to leave the Temple during free hours.
Boarding a carriage, they left Arcaena and headed north into the forest. A short time later, they rounded a bend to a clearing. Eaparius leaned closer to the window, awed.
The Wizard chuckled. "It is the
