The Big Book of Object Lessons - Mimi Patrick

    About Me

    Hi everyone!

After working in children's ministry for over twenty years and spending much of that time creating my own original children’s ministry curriculum, I decided to share my many lessons and ideas. It’s been wonderful meeting so many of you fantastic leaders seeking relevant, Biblical teachings for their Sunday School or children's church. I hope in some small way I have been able to meet your needs for exciting, affordable curriculum.

So here it is! An assortment of my lessons I grabbed from my dozens of notebooks full of handwritten lessons, game ideas and object lessons. For most of these I have supply lists but not all of them. I regularly add new material for Christian ministry teachers on my website Tools for Kids Ministry. When I’m not dreaming up more goofy games and transforming cultural icons into relevant lesson material, I’m getting gum out of my hair and preparing for an exciting Sunday.

I look forward to hearing from you!

    The Sweet Covering

Lots of people love Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups! This candy is so popular that it shows up in new incarnations every holiday as Reese’s Peanut Butter Egg or the Christmas Tree, just to name a few. If you break out peanut butter cups in kids’ church, I can promise you, you will grab their attention. It’s a good idea to bring some mini cups for kids to snack on afterward.

    The Sweet Covering

For this object lesson, you’ll need an unwrapped Reese’s cup, preferably one of the Big cups. Use a plastic knife to cut the peanut butter cup in two. You should be able to see the peanut butter inside.

Show the kids the candy and say: You see this delicious and sweet treat? Who loves Reese’s? (Allow kids to respond then calm the crowd down. They do get excited about chocolate.)

Inside this candy is what? Yep! It’s peanut butter. If you take away the sweet outer covering, you just have peanut butter like the kind you probably have in the pantry at home. You know, we are like this peanut butter. Without God, we are just plain old peanut butter like all the other peanut butters.

However, when we invite Jesus into our heart, something changes! We aren’t just peanut butter anymore. God covers our lives with the Holy Spirit and we become something sweet! Who wants to be plain peanut butter? Who wants to be like a sweet, delicious peanut butter cup?

The Peanut Butter Potter and the Clay

Before class, melt a peanut butter cup for a few seconds on a microwave-safe plate. Place the plate on a table in the classroom.

Say: Oh no guys! Look at my candy! It’s all gloopy and melted. Don’t you hate that? (Take out a fresh candy that is not melted or damaged. Unwrap it.)

The melted candy reminds me of a Bible story. Did you know that God is like a potter and a chocolate worker? He shapes our lives into something amazing like this candy once was. Then sad or unexpected events occur and we are left feeling all gloopy and melted. God’s Word promises us that God will reshape us and make us into something wonderful. We just have to be patient. Who wants some candy?

    Spiritual Mirrors

I believe you can teach Bible principles with just about any everyday object, including a plain hand mirror. I’m sure there are hundreds of ways to use a mirror in your lesson plan but I have had some success with these two mirror object lessons. Feel free to tweak them to fit your needs. Using these Bible verses and a mirror, you can teach a child a positive message that could help transform some aspect of his spiritual life.

A Spiritual Mirror: First, read this verse with your class: Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. James 1:23

Say: How many people have looked in the mirror, checking your hair or your teeth and then walked away, forgetting what you looked like? I have! See this mirror? When you look into you see a reflection of your physical body. The Bible is like a mirror but it is a spiritual one. It reflects back to us how we really look to the one who matters most, God. When you read the Bible, it reflects your character from deep inside. Don’t be like the man in the verse who looks at himself for a moment but doesn’t remember what he really looks like. Apply God’s word to your life!

    Half a Mirror

Before the class, cover half the hand mirror with paper. Kids should be able to see a partial image of themselves. For this lesson, start with this verse:

"For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know
