Women and men communicate in very different styles, and that’s fine - we just need to know that! We women act “girlie, feminine,” while men assume superiority, accept success as a right. Subservience is a strategy cave girls established to curry favor with small-brained, club wielding CEO’s.
Out of tradition we women are still subservient, in fear of our corporate lives. If we want respect and equal dividends, we have to use “tradition” as a beard. We women need to stop “feeling” and start “thinking”. We need to speak in facts, not feelings! We need to make decisions, Not, “Well...maybe we could...” “Well...I’m not sure..., maybe we could...” We’re so careful not to make a CEO feel bad - or the mail clerk...
Our voice, itself, needs firmer sounds to reflect our intelligence. Our non verbal communication: posture, voice control, manipulation, verbiage, attitude, back stabbing, bullying, hair and dress styles - all need review and maybe change. We can still be women - female, but we can be intelligent women, not “girls”.
Athena, Goddess of wisdom and strength guides us women to fuse our vast intellect and feminine wiles to be recognized as a viable force in the corporate world and beyond. We have the ability to lead, to teach, to love - achieve - that is our nature. But, respect in return is paramount; respect and appreciation for all people is now the tradition.

1. I don't deserve it. I’m not as good as someone else who’s been here longer.
2. I’m not ready. I could use more time to do a better job and after awhile, I’ll be ready.
3. Let someone else have it who needs success more than I.
4. I don’t feel I’m qualified.
5. I don’t want to look pushy.
6. What if I fail - I’ll look bad.
7. He has a family to support.
8. People won’t like me.
9. I’ve been taught to be nice, to share, don’t be pushy.
The whole focus of what you’re doing is on you, not on what you’re doing, not on your long-term goals. We need to get our mind off our self
- it’s not about who
we are, it’s about what
we are. The concept of self
can be misleading and misunderstood.
We need to focus on the goal - the goal a thing that is there to get, to absorb, to use toward the next direction, the next step up.
We already know who
we are, and that’s usually in relation to someone else. We’re a student, a wife, a mother, daughter, friend and multiple other identities. These we recognize easily - these are things
- they are limitations.
But, beyond socially acceptable, ordinary, recognizable things,
we are: successful, driven, ambitious, curious, and intelligent, to name a few.
At church the women were playing a game; we were to choose one word that would best describe ourselves.
I interpreted myself
as I
- describe me - who am I
? I
stands alone.
They chose: Mother, daughter, wife, sister, and other recognizable established characters.
I said, I’m Curious
.
They were annoyed - I wasn’t playing fair.
But, who I am is not a piece of something else.
I want to be whole.
The role of mother,
student,
etc. is easily fitted together as a part of my composition.
I can have as many parts as I want. I don’t want to play parts
of a drama, a role.
I am the lead actor in my life.
In a role,
I am a copy of everyone else, predictable; I follow someone else, a bearer of tradition, someone fearful to stand out,
afraid to make a mistake,
seeming to think I’m better than others.
In a role,
it’s essential to fit in,
follow a leader who may have half the qualifications that you have. I appreciate learning
and guidance,
but I don’t want to be a copy
of an original.
When you have feelings of doubt as to whether or not you’re good enough to learn something new, ask yourself, Why not?
If you have been considered for some promotion, some advancement, you must be qualified or you wouldn't have been considered. Accept the challenge with grace and learn-as-you-go.
Carl Jung, the Father of Psychology, at one time was confused as to what direction in life he was especially suited for. He had a dream which told him, What you are to be isn’t yet - you have to be it.
Gradually, like Sleeping Beauty, I woke up - no one is holding me back but myself!
What a revelation!
I saw through the smoke screen - through the mirror to the other side - success!
Don’t doubt yourself! Take on a new task and find a way to master it. Anything you do will put you farther ahead in Life than doing nothing or fearing change.
Fear
will extinguish any fire of Life, any burning desire to achieve, to change. Fear
is a choice of a way to live Life. In Life you can either fail or succeed. If you succeed, wonderful, if you fail,
try again. But try
intelligently; don’t repeat old mistakes.
Let’s imagine you wanted to expand your repertoire so you took on a challenging task and…failed!! Did you fail… actually, no. You learned a way to not do something. You’re ahead, maybe by increments, but still, ahead.
Thomas Edison said he learned 99 ways to not make a light bulb. You can do that, too. I have a large box of idea-pieces in my brain-attic that I tried to develop into a world-changing solution. Every so often I rummage through them to see if anything would fit yet.
As my mother used to say, Don’t throw that out - it may be valuable some day.
Unfortunately, my days are limited. Some day
may be too far off for my time allotted on this planet!
Next time you try, you’ll be farther ahead and maybe even hit the mark - you can only succeed!
Like a scientist, I studied women. I noted their style of speech, their style of mannerisms, how they related to men and other women - (very differently), how they responded to questions (very differently), initiated interaction, stayed quiet, let men take over in groups and how women helped or hindered other women to the top.
Very interesting!
KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE
In the field of Communication the First Law is to know who you’re talkin’ to, with whom you’re speaking; who’s paid to hear you say something? What will you tell them? What do they want to hear - is it what they need to hear? What strategies will you use to get them to do what you want - to find you credible?
You cannot proceed with your speech
until you have this information.
A secretary phoned me to ask if I would give a talk on protocol.
"Yes, fine. Who’s this talk for, what group?"
"A group of professionals."
"Professional what?"
"Just professionals."
My mind ran amok - hit men? CIA?, doctors, lawyers, opera singers…? It turned out to be about 40 secretaries - all women, or, as we call them today, office administrators.
We had a ball, all talked at once! Mostly about their mothers-in-law! (Not good!)
It’s quite an experience to talk to a large group of women (fun!). As Dante said, Abandon all hope all ye who enter here.
We didn’t touch on protocol.
But, the main point is the audience was happy; Therefore I was happy. I was a success.
There’ll be times when you’ll speak to a specific group, the Plumbers’ Union, for example. You’re a specialist in oceanography - what can you talk to plumbers about? (This does happen!) Think fast! What do plumbers and oceanographers have in
