Author

Dahlia DeWinters

Dahlia DeWinters a multi-genre author who flirts with the dark side. While many of her  stories still dabble in the hearts and roses genre, it is often against a sinister backdrop.  She is a lover of all things scary, even though she tends either to watch them while  gripping her husband's arm or between her fingers. Her enthusiasm for found footage  horror, surprisingly, has rewarded her with a few gems. Drawing, fiber arts, and  gardening are a few of the things she does in her spare time, when not dreaming up  stories of zombies, mysterious happenings in gothic mansions or screening horror films.

    Chapter One

THE COLD, BRACKISH water stung the delicate tissues of her nose and throat as Lucy struggled to expel it from her lungs. She dug her numb fingers into the damp sand, reassuring herself she had indeed made it to shore. The wind howled around her wet, shivering body, slapping her with the stinging surf and freezing rain. She closed her eyes and sobbed with relief. Although Nature had colluded against her, doing everything in its power to keep her from reaching shore, her iron will and desire to survive prevailed.

Lady Moon danced with the gray, storm clouds just long enough to allow her to glimpse an old, sea-weathered home within reach of her exhausted, shuddering body. It stood at the top of a long flight of wooden steps, its salt-bruised shingles glowing a light blue in the shadowed moonlight.

Panting, she wiped her wet hair out of her eyes to see it better. Probably a fisherman’s shack with little more than fishing line and hooks contained within. It didn’t matter. To remain exposed in the storm meant certain death, so she roused enough to drag her chilled body across the rough shores toward the promise of shelter.

As she crawled across the harsh sand, she allowed her gaze to sweep the shore and saw no other living being. Only the sound of the angry waves met her ears and she realized she must be the sole survivor of the shipwreck. Without any indication of help, she redoubled her efforts on reaching the battered house before the rapidly cooling night froze her where she was.

The Devil’s Pearl, with over fifty crew, had been on course from the Caribbean back to the South Carolina, full of slaves
