About this ebook

He is the last man she expected, on a rooftop, no less. She is drowning in her mother's expectations. What they both need is a change of perspective.

Kathryne flees from horrible suitor after horrible suitor, each one more atrocious than the last. After a particularly vexing engagement with a drunken cad, she attempts a desperate escape from a rooftop.

When her exit is more dramatic and dangerous than she expected, a gallant hero comes to her rescue.

Kathryne believes she's found the perfect suitor, until an awkward truth crushes the hopes she has to ever find happiness.

Rooftop Suitor is a steampunk short story romance. If you love a chivalrous hero, an uncertain heroine who struggles to rise above a shocking truth, and a modern Victorian flair, then you will enjoy this short story by E.E. Everly.

    ROOFTOP SUITOR

Charles crept up the stairwell of his lavish row home. Kathryne, you can’t run from me forever!

I had nowhere to hide. The darkness in the unlit hallway was my only protection, but that wouldn’t last long. If I slipped into a servant’s room, I’d become trapped, with the convenience of a bed for Charles to ravish me on. The only way to escape was down the hall, to the roof access. I’d jump to flee his loutishness; I didn’t care if the drop was three stories.

Kathryne, your mother wants us to spend quality time getting to know each other. Charles was almost around the corner. He bumbled along without a lamp, knocking into the walls, so I hoped he wouldn’t see me exit at the other end of the hall.

I rattled the handle and pounded on the door, which wasn’t locked, merely jammed. I threw my shoulder against the wood, and the door flew open, nearly toppling me. After easing it shut, I raced up the narrow steps. The final door was simple to open, probably because the servants snuck up here for regular smoke breaks.

I burst into the fresh summer night and took a ragged breath. The air was cool from a rare mild spell in July. I scanned the rooftop, looking for a hiding place. Oddly, two boards spanned the six-foot gap between this apartment and the one
