TOP TEN WAYS TO RAISE YOUR SCORE

When it comes to taking the SHSAT, some test-taking skills will do you more good than others. Here are our picks for the top 10 ways to raise your score.

    1. Get to the test center early. Make sure you give yourself plenty of extra time to get there.

    2. Listen to the test monitors and follow their instructions carefully.

    3. Read every word of the instructions. Read every word of every question.

    4. Mark your answers by completely darkening the answer space of your choice.

    5. Mark only ONE answer for each question, even if you think that more than one answer is correct. You must choose only one. If you mark more than one answer, the scoring machine will consider you wrong.

    6. If you change your mind, completely erase your initial choice. Leave no doubt as to which answer you intend.

    7. Check often to be sure that the question number matches the answer space, that you haven’t skipped a space by mistake.

    8. Stay alert. Be careful not to mark a wrong answer just because you weren’t concentrating.

    9. Don’t panic. If you cannot finish a part before time is up, don’t worry. Do not let your performance on any one part affect your performance on any other part.

    10. Check and recheck, time permitting. If you finish a part before time is up, use the remaining time to check that each question is answered in the right space and that there is only one answer for each question. Return to the questions you found difficult and rethink them.

    THE SPECIALIZED HIGH SCHOOLS

There are eight specialized high schools that require an entrance exam according to the 2012-2013 Specialized High Schools Student Handbook. These are Bronx High School of Science; Brooklyn Technical High School; Brooklyn Latin School; High School for Mathematics, Science and Engineering at City College; High School of American Studies at Lehman College; Queens High School for the Sciences at York College; Staten Island Technical High School; and Stuyvesant High School. Specialized high schools are public high schools established and run by the New York City Board of Education to serve the needs of academically gifted students. New York State Education Law makes a written examination a requirement for admission to these high schools. Places are awarded to those students who earn the highest scores on the entrance exam, the New York City Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT).

Although each of the specialized high schools has its own unique features, all seven emphasize mathematics and science, offering many intriguing electives and a wide range of advanced placement courses. Of course, each school also offers all the basic New York State-required academic courses that every student needs for success in college and beyond.

The exciting and academically challenging atmosphere of the specialized high schools stimulates both the students and the teachers. Enrichment courses are available in the humanities as well as in the sciences and technology.

THE SPECIALIZED HIGH SCHOOLS ADMISSIONS TEST (SHSAT)

    Tip

Remember to bring your admission ticket to the test center on the day of the test. It includes your ranked choices of schools.

The New York City Specialized High Schools Admissions Test is offered to all eighth- and ninth-grade students residing within the five boroughs of New York City who wish to attend one of the specialized high schools. The same examination is given for all seven schools and students who qualify may attend the school of their choice. The qualifying score, however, depends upon the number of seats available and the scores of all candidates. The tests are graded and arranged in order of rank, from the highest score to the lowest score. Each school has a number of freshman and sophomore seats to fill, and seats are filled starting with the highest test scores. When all available seats have been filled, the cutoff mark is determined.

Students who miss the cutoff score of their first-choice school may be assigned to their second-choice school if their score is above the cutoff for that school. This procedure continues until all seats in all seven schools have been filled.

Eighth and ninth grade students in public, private, and parochial schools who are NYC residents planning on attending the specialized high schools of NYC must take the Specialized High Schools Admission Test. The testing sites are set so that students sitting for the test will take the exam in the geographic area where their home is located.

The exam is given in late October typically at a specialized high school or other local public high school in order to make it convenient for the candidates to travel to the test site.

It is very important that a student planning to take the exam see his or her guidance counsellor in September to register to take the exam. All candidates will be given a booklet written by the Board of Education of NYC entitled: Specialized High Schools Student Handbook, which contains all of the current dates and locations for the exam. The handbook is also available online. It is essential that you have this handbook.

    SUMMER DISCOVERY PROGRAM

The specialized high schools offer a Summer Discovery Program for students who have come close to the cutoff number and have been recommended by a school counselor. To be eligible for this program, a student must also meet any one of the following criteria:

    • be from a Chapter 1 school and be eligible for food services; or

    • be receiving public assistance; or

    • come from a family whose income is below the Department of Social Services’ standards; or

    • be a ward of the state or a foster child; or

    • have entered the United States within the last four years and live in a home where English is not the language spoken.

Students accepted in to the Summer Discovery Program who are successful in passing the courses will become students at the school where they were conditionally accepted.

    Summing It Up

    • The specialized high schools are: Bronx High School of Science; Brooklyn Technical High School; High School for Mathematics, Science and Engineering at City College; High School of American Studies at Lehman College; Queens High School for the Sciences at York College; Staten Island Technical High School; and Stuyvesant High School.

    • You are expected to bring an admission ticket to the test center on the day of the test.

    • Tests are graded and arranged in order of rank, from the highest score to the lowest score. The freshman and sophomore seats are filled starting with the highest test scores.

The SHSAT is a difficult test. It is intended to assess the verbal and mathematical skills required for success at a high school for academically gifted students.

The best preparation for the test is to keep up with your schoolwork throughout the year. You can, however, help to increase your verbal skills through independent reading of a variety of books, magazines, and newspapers. And you can build needed math skills by solving additional problems—particularly challenging problems that go beyond what you do in your mathematics class.

The ten mini-exams in Part II of this book are designed to give you practice with the type of questions you will be expected to answer when you take the actual SHSAT. Taking these practice tests will give you the confidence-building experience you need to score high on your test and get into the specialized high school of your choice.

    NOTE

Before taking the SHSAT, you must sign a statement indicating that you are well enough to take the test.
