About this ebook

Dominic wakes up in a battleship in space, with the war still going on...

Adam kisses Dominic in the mess before anyone else is up. It's intimate, Adam's hand on his chin, warm fingers just resting there, and maybe Dominic should have expected this, but he hadn't. Adam looks firm, determined, and Dominic thinks about their hidden moment in the shower, how long he held onto it for. He wonders if this will be the same.

    Airlock - H Stinington

    Chapter one

When Dominic wakes up he has no idea where he is.

He’s in a med bay, but not the one on the Stormborne – the surfaces are too haphazardly organized, and the front of the cabinets are worn matte, scratched from hard use. He’s not restrained, and he’s still wearing his uniform. His face is throbbing, and so are the burns on his back, and he’s groggy, like he’s been sedated. He’s alone. He can’t remember the last time he was alone. The lights are dim overhead, which means they’re probably in transit already – on the Stormborne, anyway, power was only used when needed, so the brights were for takeoff and landing. This ship is a little more worn than the Stormborne, older, but Dominic doesn’t know what that means, if anything. He recognizes nothing here. There’s no insignia on the walls, no windows, nothing to give him any bearings.

The whole room wobbles and goes grey when he pushes himself into a sitting position. There’s a scalpel sitting on the counter across the room, still vacuum-sealed in its sanitary packaging, and if he can get it he’ll have some way to protect himself, in theory.

He’s contemplating how much energy it would take the lurch over there, and whether his legs will hold him up, when the door whirrs softly open.

You’re up. He knows that voice.

Adam, Dominic murmurs. The events of the night before come flooding back. No. You didn’t. Did you?

But it’s definitely Adam standing just inside the doorway. The door closes behind him, and he has his hands stuffed into his pockets. He looks older than the last time Dominic saw him, but that was a few years ago. He’s filled out. He looks like an adult, not the round-faced kid Dominic remembers.

Sorry it took me so long to find you, Adam says. He’s drinking Dominic in, staring, and Dominic wants to hide.

I told you not to. Fuck, Adam, you should have left me there. Dominic watches Adam’s mouth go stubborn, and he looks down at his hands, realizing – shit.

He pushes himself off the table, and makes it to the scalpel before his legs buckle. It doesn’t matter anyway, he just huddles against the metal cabinets, knees banging hard into the floor, and rips the scalpel out of its packaging. He’s already cutting into the meat of his palm, blood welling up around the blade, when Adam makes it to him.

Dominic, what the hell, don’t – Adam says, but before he can do more than wrap his fingers around Dominic’s wrist, Dominic’s dropping the scalpel to the floor and digging his fingers into the wound, rooting around until – yes, there it is. He pulls out the chip, tinier than his pinky fingernail, and holds it out.

Adam looks at him, eyes wide, face pale. They wouldn’t have found you – we have – there’s a jammer on the ship, they couldn’t –

Please, put it out the airlock, Dominic says. He’s still so woozy. "I told you, you should have
