Romain Gary (born Roman Kacew, and also known by the pseudonym Émile Ajar) was a French Jewish novelist. He was born in Lithuania in 1914 and moved to France at the age of 14. After graduating from university with a degree in law, he fought as part of the Free French Forces until the end of the Second World War (1939-1945), and was decorated with honours including the Companion of the Liberation and the Legion of Honour. After the war, he focused on writing novels, and also pursued a diplomatic career until 1960.

Gary is the author of numerous novels, and remains the only French writer to have received the Prix Goncourt on two separate occasions: once in 1956 for his novel The Roots of Heaven, published under the name Romain Gary, and once in 1975 for The Life Before Us, published under the pseudonym Émile Ajar. He committed suicide in 1980 at the age of 66, leaving behind a vast body of work which was heavily influenced by 20th-century French history and which explores a variety of themes, including courage, rebellion, love and femininity.
