About this ebook

RITA award winner!
Andrea Sullivan is so consumed by her hospitality-consultant job that she’s forgotten what brings her joy. She dreads her new assignment—a last chance to snag a high-profile client in Scotland. Yet the lush Isle of Skye transcends her preconceptions. As does the man she must impress, the rugged, blue-eyed Scotsman James MacDonald.

He’s passionate about cooking, but after six restaurants, four cookbooks, and his own television show, he’s grown weary of the scrutiny that comes with living in the public eye.

Soon Andrea and James begin to sense these five days in Skye together may just be God’s wild invitation into deeper life . . . and truer love.

Five Days in Skye by Carla Laureano
to be published June 10.13 by David C Cook

Ms Laureano's debut story of unrelenting tension between Andrea, our hospitality consultant, on a mission of job advancement, and James, a Scottish celebrity chef with reputation to uphold. Their attraction to each other, their inner turmoil of unresolved issues, the familial relational struggles, all combined to keep the tension unusually high.

Secondary characters were very interesting and added appreciatively to the overall homeyness of the story. The premise of Andrea's help being needed in the planned hotel renovations that will complete James' deceased father's dreams, is unique and inviting.

I enjoyed the beauty of Scotland described and could well picture the very scenes of coastlands and craggy terrain where I've lived and travelled myself. A necessary relief to the intensity of the pressure built into the relational struggles of Andrea and James. Lots of food sampling and description of restaurants added reality to the story's main theme of our celebrity antagonist's role as chef.

A heart wrenching confession from Andrea stirs compassion for her hesitancy in responding to James. Yet I was later left disbelieving at her unexpected response to James while attending a concert with his friends. Andrea's discomfort at overhearing gossip taking precedence over her relationship to James was disconcerting and, I felt, unrealistic. Her sudden over-reactions precipitated consequences that didn't ring true. The ending definitely held its own unusual twist but, unfortunately, I found it too abrupt to consider it a satisfying conclusion.

I look forward to reading more from Ms Laureano as her writing continues to evolve.

Thanks to David C Cook for opportunity to read and review without obligation.

Andrea could not be more disappointed to be stuck for another week in Great Britain. This is the week her vacation in Tahiti should begin, but her boss in New York insisted that she make one more contact with a potential client. James MacDonald is a local celebrity with a Celebrity Chef TV show in London, but he is looking to open a hotel and restaurant in his home community of Skye. That would be Skye, as in Isle of Skye, as in Scotland, but she can't see anything good about it. Nothing about it sounds like a worthy alternative for Tahiti!Andrea doesn't watch TV and doesn't recognize MacDonald when she first meets him at a pub in London. She has gone there to dig up a little information on him before their meeting the next day, where she hopes to land a contract for the hospitality company she works for, and then head back home to New York. He doesn't realize she is the person he is to meet with either, and starts to flirt with her. It is exactly what she doesn't want to hear, as it was her rejection of an overly aggressive client which just lost her the last contract. She is sure this surprise assignment is her boss's way of getting even for the loss of that contract. He has made it clear that she had better come home with a big contract in hand.Author Carla Laureano introduces us to two successful and attractive people who are nevertheless wounded and defensive because of broken relationships in their past. Both are instantly attracted to one another, but they experience conflict all along the way, mostly from fear of becoming vulnerable and thus open to the pain each has experienced previously. This is an absorbing romance written from a Christian perspective. Laureano slowly unwraps the secrets of the past, and in the meantime, is great at building the electricity between Andrea and James, as he makes it his mission to make her fall in love with the beautiful countryside, the lochs, and the villages, which are all vividly described by the author. And if you haven't noticed yet, this is an American woman, a handsome, self assured man of Scotland, and his nickname is Jamie...how could this miss!

I was first drawn to this book because I love anything Scottish. The author was able to write a story that took me into the landscape of wild Scotland. The main characters James and Andrea both had secrets, old heart breaks that kept them from fully living their lives. They went day to day just existing. James realizes sooner than Andrea that it isn't truly a life if you aren't living it, experiencing it and embracing all it can offer. As the two grapple with their pasts and present they are brought closer together. and they find that God has been waiting for them to come home all along.I would love to read a continuation of this book and make it a series. The author ended the book at a wonderful place to do so.I was given an e-copy of this book for the purpose of my honest review.

Will Andrea open her heart to God and love on the beautiful Isle of Skye? Or will she let her ambitions of a successful career interfere with a life full of love and happiness?

Andrea Sullivan is a hospitality consultant with one last chance to save her job and land the promotion that she has worked so had to achieve. She is not affected by her new client, James MacDonald, a Scottish celebrity chef, until his true character begins to show. Andrea just wants to get her job done and close the deal, while keeping her heart walled off from any damage. Both Andrea and James have experienced heartbreak and disappointment in the past. As they spend more time together they begin to wonder if God brought them together for a reason. After spending five days on the Isle of Skye, will Andrea open her heart and let James in?

Five Days in Skye is the first book that I have read by Carla Laureano and I was a captive audience from the first chapter! The vocabulary and descriptions she used brought me straight into the middle of the Scottish Highlands, and I didn't want to leave. I burned through this book so quickly, and had the worst case of P.B.D. (Post Book Depression) at the end, because I wanted it to keep going. The romance side of things were very tasteful and respectful. This book was very inspiring for me and I think that many people would be able relate to the characters. I think it is safe to say that everyone has experienced hurt and disappointment of one kind or another in our lives. Will we let that hurt hinder our happiness in the present and future? Or will we let God in and completely heal and restore our heart so that we can live a full and happy life the way He intended us to? I know that five days was not nearly enough time for me to be content with dwelling between the pages of this book. Which is why I have already started London Tides, the second book in The MacDonald Family Trilogy.

I received a free copy of Five Days in Skye from David C Cook through Radiant Lit in exchange for my honest review.

Title: Five Days in Skye (The MacDonald Family Trilogy #1)Author: Carla LaureanoPages: 330Year: 2013Publisher: David C. CookMy rating is 3 stars.James MacDonald is a successful chef, TV show star and author of cook books. He has a different woman on his arm every time he socializes. He appears to be a love ‘em and leave ‘em type of guy and not to be interested in any kind of serious relationship. However, what the majority of people don’t see is his foundation set up to help at risk young men learn a way to make an honest living, his love of his family and he doesn’t take any of the young women he dates to his home at the end of the night. He has a zest for life, but when he meets Andrea he realizes his life has been missing something.Andrea Sullivan is a hospitality consultant and the top money earner for her company. She handles all the tough deals, so why is she brought in to seal the deal with a British celebrity chef on a sub-par deal? She knows she is being punished for her actions during the last deal. She has been promised the position of vice-president if she can bring this deal to a close. She has been promised this before, but what is she supposed to do? She can’t let eight years of working seven days a week go down the drain, so off to Scotland she goes. Once there, her host persuades her to stay a few extra days to enjoy Skye and take a time off from work. She soon falls in love with Skye and her host. Is she ready to make a commitment to a celebrity when she shuns the spotlight? As she lives in New York and James mostly lives in London and they both travel a lot is a relationship even possible?I really liked the descriptions of the beautiful scenery and the delicious food the characters experienced. I liked the faith element in the story and would have liked to see that sooner in the story and more often. I just didn’t find the story between the two characters all that interesting. The tale moved slowly and was predictable. I thought the conflict between James and his brother Ian could have been explained better.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received one or more of the products or services mentioned above for free in the hope that I would mention it on my blog.
