About this ebook
On the morning that a raven arrives at the Iron compound with news of a slain Province Steward, Clint Godzton and his men are sent by order of Overseer Lisbet Kassin to the province of Morthet to investigate the murder. What Godzton finds is a killer who has crossed an ocean and may not be intent on stopping with just one of the kingdom's stewards. Following the killer's trail to Pyne, Godzton learns that the killer was possibly was an Iron at one time.
In Vette a source reveals to him that the Eldafienden, an order of criminals whose history is entrenched in tales of a fabled enemy, The March, is behind a conspiracy to seize the throne while the kingdom is at war by replacing Province Stewards with members of their own. He questions the validity of such a bold claim and employs the help of Martha Cagmere, an Iron recruit, to check the order of the names of steward candidates on the Crown List. Names cannot be changed without the King's rule, and the Iron guards the list, but what Martha finds challenges his oath and naive beliefs that the Iron High Guard are above corruption.
With his oath in doubt and his world deteriorating visions of The March, the forerunners for the return of the Leviathan Kings and a signal to the end of days, bleed into his nightmare and begin to plague his battered mind. Knowledgeable of the fable his father told him as a child, he believes it is nothing more than a superstitious tale of the ancient world. When Godzton crosses paths with Lucinda Mathayus, an Elf whose storied criminality is well known to him, he finds she has stolen an item of grave importance, the Blackphisk, a ledger of the Eldafienden's records that removes any doubt of their plan and shows that the Iron High Guard have been betrayed. All he has are words on paper though and needs her to give them credence to the Iron Overseers, so he takes the Elf into custody while he continues his pursuit of the killer. Studying the ledger, he finds that the killer plans to make his escape from the kingdom in the town of Niset. With an unlikely ally in tow, Godzton now races to end his charge.
