- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5In my opinion this is a wonderful book. The authors use of descriptive language helps enhance the book by making the reading feel as though the reader is actually experiencing what he or she is reading. For example, "floats and marching bands go down the street. Cars are honking their horns. And everyone's waving colorful flags." This makes me feel as though I could be standing on the streets witnessing the parade right in front of me by closing my eyes and imagining the story coming to life. Another reason I like this book is because the author uses Spanish and English words side by side in order to provide the original traditional feel and still allow non-Spanish speakers to read and enjoy the history of this celebration. For example, "its cinco de mayo (seen-koh day MY-oh) is Spanish for "the fifth of May."" The main message of this book is to inform readers as to why cinco day mayo is celebrated. The book also strives to explain what types of festivities and history is passed down during the holiday. It talks about the food, music, festivities, and outfits that are worn during the celebrations and why they are worn.
