- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Impressive book about the beauty and joy of Chinese New Year. I love the chapter heading of "Preparing the Heart". If you are looking for a comprehensive guide to Chinese New Year that is not too wordy, this is a terrific resource.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This book was very informational and enjoyable. It informs the audience of the important celebrations, holidays and festivals of the Chinese New Year. I think that the "big idea" for this book is to make it easy for children to understand and learn about the Chinese New Year. An example of how it is easy to understand the different subject matter in the book is how they made a chart to show which years were what animal of the Chinese calendar. They listed all of the different animals and then had the years 1984-2007 listed out next to the animal. It made it easy to find the year you were born in and what animal is for that year. Another example in the book is how they make sure to add a glossary at the end to give definitions of all of the highlighted words. This adds a deeper dimension to the book and it is helpful to any age of audience that reads about the Chinese New Year. There are also cute sayings throughout the book to talk personally with the audience. An example of this is when it is talking about how the Dragon is in the parade and the book asks the audience how the villagers would scare the dragon away. They give the answer that according to legend, they used bright lights, loud noises, and the color red.
