I looked around. He was talking to me.
Your wife is ugly.
I was at first confused, then, pretty quickly, offended.
Let me back up. I had recently been invited to join a covenant group with some other pastors from across the country. Our first few meetings had been online but we were now gathered for our first face-to-face meeting. We had been discussing some of the issues facing the church. The tone had grown critical and cynical, as we had begun to do the easy work of pointing out all the things wrong with the twenty-first-century church in America. We had a lot of material to choose from, including examples from our own denomination and our own congregations. We were clever, we were cute, and we were cutting the church down. Like I said, it was easy. As pastors who spend the bulk of our time in the church world, we were expertly qualified to point out the faults of the people of God. It came natural to us; it was almost as if we enjoyed it.
Somewhere in the midst of that conversation, John, a pastor from North Carolina I had grown to admire in our web meetings, said the unthinkable. And he said it to me: Your wife is ugly.
Number one, he had never met my wife. Number two, my wife is gorgeous (pictured below—just kidding). Number three, where I come from that type of insult results in a throw-down. Because I didn’t respond, he said it again. I looked around the table hoping to draw some context clues from the others on how I should respond. They looked as confused as I did.
John didn’t let the awkwardness linger long. Isn’t this what we say to Jesus when we talk this way about the church?
Suddenly, we all knew what he was saying. The Bible refers to the church as Jesus’s bride. For Jesus, the church is a thing of beauty. Jesus loves the church and considers himself to be one flesh with it. And here we were saying how ugly she was. John made his point. And I was still a little mad at him.
Do we believe that Jesus still looks at the church as a thing of beauty? If so, should this affect how we talk about her?
A predominantly negative rhetoric exists around the church today. For many on the outside of the church, judgmental
and hypocritical
are the first words that come to mind when asked about Christ’s body. Many more on the outside have moved on from thinking negatively to something worse. They don’t talk about the church at all. Apathy has grown. Instead of turning their noses up to the church, they walk by without even noticing.
But it is those of us who are a part of the church that are best at pointing out its blemishes. Pastors gather for coffee and gripe. Laypeople church-hop from one congregation to the next, finding the new one as broken and bruised as the last. We cleverly blog about the latest dumb thing the church has done, all the while shining a spotlight on how cute we are and casting the bride of Christ further into the shadows.
This book will not be about calling Jesus’s bride ugly. Instead my hope is that it shines light on her beauty, a beauty that still stops me in my tracks. For sure, we have to be real about the ugly. Jesus didn’t shy away from calling out the religious ugliness of his day. But his eyes were always on the horizon. He looked to a new day when the kingdom would come and the church would be made right. He looked to it in the future, and he claimed it in the present. I think we should do the same.
It should be known that I love the church. I imagine that you might too. Maybe a better way of saying it is, I believe in the church. That confession is tucked in toward the end of our historic creed, but it is one that we should reclaim. As I hear my generation claim a faith in Jesus but decry the church, I think we should be reminded that we only know about Jesus because of the church. Broken, blemished, and battered for sure, it has carried the story for all these centuries.
I believe in the church. I was baptized in a little white dress in a small Methodist church in 1980. I was four months old while my twenty-something parents held me, made promises for me, loved me, and did what they thought was right and holy.
The more I learn about the event, the more I realize that it was the most important one of my life. It’s strange I know; something that I had no control over, no decision in, no memory of . . . guides me still today.
I have learned now that my family was a disconnected family, disconnected from God and the church. My dad grew up in a fundamental church in Tennessee in the 1950s and ’60s. If he asked questions, he was given black-and-white answers. When he inquired about the gray areas of the time (think assassinations, racial prejudice, and confusing wars) he was given not space but rebuke. Guilt motivated salvation, and by the time he was eighteen he was running from the church as he knew it as fast as he could. My mother, on the other hand, did not grow up attending church. She grew up in a large, close family that frequently moved and never settled into regular church attendance. And yet sometime in the late 1970s, as a young married couple, just starting a family, my parents met someone who became a friend, who they trusted, who then simply invited them to St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, a church start just getting its legs underneath it. My mother and older brother were baptized, and then a short time later, I was baptized, and something in the heart of that young family began to desire deeply to know more of Jesus Christ. We had this insatiable Jesus-pull on our life. We hungered for him, not knowing the rules, not knowing all the appropriate behaviors, and that church gave us space to seek him.
I think about how my baptism in that newly built sanctuary changed the course of my history, and I’m so thankful for the church. Infant baptism is a symbol that God is working in the heart of a child long before he or she can make a reciprocal effort to love and choose God. Infant baptism puts more emphasis on the action of God than the action of the boy or girl. Infant baptism is a hopeful precursor to the day when the child answers the wooing longing desire of God to be connected, to be in relationship. And on the day I was baptized:
My parents repented of their sin and acknowledged the power God gives to release them from sin.
They professed their faith in Jesus as Savior and Lord.
And interestingly in the ancient liturgy of the church, they professed their belief in the church that God has opened to people of all ages, nations, and races.
Then they made a promise over me. This young couple who had been disconnected from the church promised to pray for me, teach me about Jesus, and bring me to church until I was old enough to choose Jesus myself.
And they fulfilled their promise.
So, I have some hesitation with the whole we like Jesus, but not the church
concept that many of my generation have purported over the last several years. I mean, I get it. I spend every day in some way connected to the church, and most days I like Jesus a lot more than I like the church. But I have begun to wonder, is this really an option—Jesus without the church?
Is there really a Jesus without the church?
Jesus, like us, was critical of the established religion of his day, but would he go for that?
Yeah, you can just have me; you don’t need to gather with the rest of these messed-up people.
I think the answer is no. Simply and clearly, no.
I am still considered a young clergyperson in the denomination in which I serve. I am often asked, Why did you get into this?
The reason: I believe in the church. Not just Jesus. I could have lived out my vocation in a different way if it was just about me and him. But it’s bigger than that.
I can’t shake that had it not been for the vision of some people in a living room in the early 1970s saying we need a new church in this new community to reach new people, had it not been for a young pastor who took an appointment that was not glamorous, then my parents wouldn’t have heard the story again and for the first time. I wouldn’t have learned in the way that I did that Jesus loved me. And it all happened in the church. Not in a building, but in the church.
