Simple but interesting story. Will allow you to know & feel for the characters as they progress in their lives.....really a book that you will want to finish reading almost as soon as you pick it up.

Annie Weaver has returned home to Mifflin County, Pennsylvania to care for her father. Unknown to the community, she returns as a licensed nurse. No one, especially Samuel Yoder, the doctor caring for her father knows this. She decides she wants to stay in Mifflin County, but will she find a way to put her medical training to use? Will Samuel, who has fallen in love with her find a way to put his painful past behind him, forget about their age difference, and make a future for himself and Annie?I've read a lot of Amish fiction recently and found this to be enjoyable yet lacking in some areas. Hopefully the questions left unanswered will be answered in another book. Either way I look forward to reading more by this author and watching her writing develop.

Annie had left home and became a nurse even though it was against everything her faith believed in. She wasn't happy and wanted to return home but didn't know how she would be received. When the call came that her dad was hurt, she rushed home even though she knew she may never be able to practice again. After meeting Samuel, things became even more confusing because he was nothing like she remember him. Will things turn out so she can have the simple Amish Christmas she had been longing for? This is a very sweet and simple love story. I really loved how the characters all interacted with one another. There were enough side stories weaved in that rounded out the book. There was even a bit of teasing and that we don't always see in these books. The Pennsylvania Dutch that was used in the book was nicely done and although there is a glossary for the words you may not know, I found that I could figure most of them out myself. I felt myself drawn into the Amish faith and the simplicity of their ways not only through the descriptions of their houses and decorations but also through the simple way of Ms. Chapman's writing. This is not a meat and potatoes type of book, if you are looking for depth, it's not here. If you want a simple love story that will warm those winter nights, stop here. There is a discussion guide in the back of the book that will be a great help for book clubs. There were a few unanswered questions in the book that were never neatly wrapped up by the end. Maybe a sequel(s)? This would make a good book for family reading night. This is a debut novel for Ms. Chapman and even though I have a big nagging question at the end of the book, I'll be on the watch for another of her books! This books gets 5 out of 7 thumbs up. I wouldn't run out and buy the book, but check it out from the library or get it from a friend for those cold winter nights.Provided to me by NetGalley, I was not otherwise compensated for my views on this book.

A very fast and easy read, perfect for this busy holiday season. Chapman takes the typical route of love, break-up, and get back together. Still, even though you know the outcome and there are no surprises, it makes for a good story.

I loved this book. The author writes these characters in a very down to earth real way, they come off as real people with real problems. The protagonist Annie, was a girl that was very easy to relate to. Going to live with her aunt during her rumspringe allowed her to become a part of the English world for a bit, she trained to be an RN, a secret she felt she needed to keep from her family back home. When she got the call that her father was sick she quickly goes home and judged a bit critically by Samuel Yoder in the beginning, although because of the backstory we got about Annie, I could understand where Samuel was coming from. Because of the loss of his wife and child I felt like he was trying to shield his heart from more hurt, but that didn't stop the feelings that he started having for Annie, and he soon realizes that Annie is all grown up and not the flighty girl she was when she left for her rumspringe. While this book is a Christmas book I feel like it would be a great read anytime of the year. Vannetta Chapman writes with a style all her own, she does a great job of drawing out the emotions and feelings of the characters. While this story was an "Amish" story, she doesn't continually point that out, instead, I felt like I was reading a story about a family, a community, that just happened to be Amish! She draws you into the world of Annie and Samuel, giving the reader a glimpse of their daily lives, and their willingness to help others in need. The way that Annie's family and community embraced the skills she learned while in the Englisch world made it plain that it was God's plan for Annie to be able to help her people.Whether your a fan of good wholesome reads, or enjoy a great Amish story, or like a slow, sweet romance, then you definitely need to pick up this debut novel from Vannetta Chapman, but be warned once you start reading you wont be able to put this one down!

This was an enjoyable sweet romance that takes you inside the Amish community where things are slower paced and life seems more simplistic. I have read other books that dealt with the Amish people, but this one seemed to represent a people who had a great love for their family and acceptance of each other, even when things were discovered that weren't necessarily "the Amish way of doing things". Annie Weaver has been gone from her community for 3 years, where she has lived with her Aunt in Philadelphia, where Annie has become an RN. She finds herself quickly returning home when she finds out her father is in the hospital. She helps nurse him back to health and ends up helping out in her community with her skills. One thing she hadn't planned on though was the growing feelings she has for Samuel, a local farmer who has some medical training and helps out the folks when ill. They don't hit it off at first, but you know they are going to and it is a joy to watch it happen. I thoroughly enjoyed Annie's family members and felt the author left herself wide open to do more books hopefully in a series about some of the other characters in this book, as there were many that I would love to know what became of them. I did feel I was dropped into this story, like I was in book 2 or 3 of a series. I felt more details were needed for how and why Annie left her home and ended up in Philadelphia. And I would have loved to known Samuel before his tragedy of losing his wife and daughter. This was an enjoyable Christmas read and a book you can curl up on the couch and just enjoy.

This was my first book by Vannetta Chapman and I think she did a good job.

This was an enjoyable Amish fiction book, throwing christmas in there is a stretch for me as the book ended befor second Christmas, the amish celebration of christmas. It was really about the time before Christmas.

I loved meeting Annie's family and getting to know them all but there was lots of talk about a puppy for one of her sisters for Christmas and we never got to see that play out, we never saw the end of the unwed amish girl that Annie had met with a few times.

Chapman’s main characters, Annie and Samuel skim along the surface of emotions, memories, and romance. She presents a conflict between the Amish culture duty and responsibilities to others with fulfilling one’s own needs. The story has an undertone of faith without preaching a specific religious belief.
