    Intergenerational Worship

As you study Three Simple Rules: A Wesleyan Way of Living by Reuben P. Job with the children, youth, and adults of your congregation, you may want to plan for group involvement in intergenerational activities. Consider these possibilities:

Plan a concluding celebration on a Sunday morning that will create a renewed commitment to practicing the three simple rules. Recruit adults, youth, and children to offer testimonies about what they learned and practiced during their study.

During the study, have the groups learn the song Stay in Love With God. An intergenerational choir can sing the song during worship.

Add an intergenerational activity to each session. For example, the combined group might create a group banner for each of the three simple rules. The banners can then be displayed in the sanctuary during worship as a reminder of what the groups have learned.

Make suggestions of songs or hymns that reflect the three simple rules for those who plan the worship services for the weeks following the study. Have someone name the connections to the three simple rules when the songs are sung.

Prepare a video or skits that illustrate the three simple rules. Involve actors from all age groups.

Have children, youth, and adults work together to design a worship altar that reflects the meanings of the three simple rules in the lives of Christians.

    Wesley's General Rules

John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist Movement that began in the eighteenth century, was ordained as a priest in the Church of England in 1728. As the movement grew, John Wesley organized its members into societies who met weekly to provide mutual accountability for their Christian spiritual growth. Anyone who wanted to flee from the wrath to come, and to be saved from their sins was welcome to join. However, a disciplined life was required of those who wished to remain in a society.

In 1743, leaders in the societies asked for guidance. Whatshouldweteach?theywantedtoknow. What guidelines can we follow as we seek to live holy lives in our complex world? After much thought and discussion, John Wesley answered with what has become known as the General Rules of the United Societies. Even though it has been over 265 years since Wesley's rules were published, these three rules are still basic guidelines for Christians living in the complex world of today. Bishop Reuben P. Job has summarized Wesley's rules as three simple rules: Do No Harm; Do Good; and Stay in Love With God.

Wesley's General Rules are based on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. The rules are not laws that must be enforced or descriptions of righteous works that must be performed in order for one to be a Christian. Instead, they are guidelines for a way of living that will form Christian character among those who strive to follow them. The goal of Wesley's three simple rules is to help faithful followers of Jesus Christ achieve a goal that Wesley described as a holiness of heart and life.

For John Wesley, holiness is two-fold. First, there is an inward, personal holiness that seeks a relationship with God that leads to a life of trust, obedience, joy, and worship. Then, there is an outward holiness that shows itself in the ways a Christian shows love for God through acts of love for neighbors. Wesley described this holiness of heart and life in two categories—works of piety and works of mercy.

The second and third of the General Rules—Do Good and Stay in Love With God—are related to
