      Introduction

      It had been just the two of them ever since Bobby was born. He had never known his dad. When Charity felt her son was old enough to handle the information, she told him about the accident. 

      "It was a beautiful day so your dad and I decided to go out to dinner. I was pregnant with you at the time but you weren't due to arrive for another 3 weeks. Neither of us had expected my water to break that night, but that's exactly what happened.

      "We left our food on the table and rushed out of the restaurant.  While heading to the hospital a drunk driver ran a red light and smashed into the driver's side of our car. 

      "A man witnessing the accident called 9-1-1. The ambulance arrived in minutes. Your dad was killed upon impact.  I was unconscious, but the medics could tell I was still breathing.  

      "They rushed me to the hospital. The doctors were very concerned.  It took them a while to revive me.

      I looked into their eyes and whispered, Save my baby.  Save my baby." 

      I was in critical condition.  Naturally, the hospital staff was more interested in keeping me alive than my unborn child.  However, they complied with my wishes.  They performed an emergency c-section and delivered my beautiful baby boy.  It was a miracle the doctors were able to save us both, Bobby.   

      Tears slowly rolled down Charity’s cheeks.  She had been devastated by Robert’s death but felt blessed that her only child’s life had been spared. 

      Bobby reached over and hugged his mom tight.

      The bond between mother and son was strong because of those events and the ones that followed after Bobby was born. The two have been caught up in many adventures over the years. 

      In Nothing in Common, Bobby discovers an unconscious baby in the woods while walking his dog. Later someone follows his mom and tries to kill her.

      Moving Day

      Charity Brewster and her son, Bobby had lived in an old run-down apartment for 10 years.  Hearing the loud noise of her neighbor's vacuuming in the middle of the night or their music blaring all hours of the day had gotten old.  Charity was tired of renting. 

      Homeownership was the obvious next step but she was skeptical.  She wasn't sure she'd qualify for a mortgage.  That uncertainty kept her from applying.

      The final straw came when the people living above her had a wild party that lasted all night.  The loud laughter, creaking floor boards, and the deafening noise of what sounded like a rock band kept her and Bobby awake most of the night. The Brewsters needed to move.

      The next day she put her fears aside and summoned up the courage to apply for a loan.  She tried keeping busy while waiting for an answer from the bank but her nerves were on edge. 

      When the loan officer finally called, he delivered bad news. Her loan was denied.  Charity was heartbroken.  It seemed that obtaining the American dream was for others, not for her. 

      The loan officer explained that she earned enough money to buy a house but had too much debt. That one factor had driven her credit score down.

      Charity was determined to move her son out of the apartment complex and raise him in a single-family home.  She crunched numbers, desperate to find a way to reduce her debt. 

      She concentrated until she gave herself a headache but in the end, she came up with a solution.  She vowed to implement her plan, starting with her next paycheck. 

      It took a few years but her dedication eventually paid off.  Her credit score improved dramatically.  Encouraged and feeling hopeful, she applied for a home loan again.  To her delight, this time her application was approved.

      Charity was ecstatic.  She ended the call with her loan officer and danced a jig to the loud music vibrating through her walls.  Moments before that same music had been driving her crazy. 

      She felt renewed and excited about her future.  She researched realty companies in the area and found Carmilla Jacobs with Con-Sob Realty.  She had a good reputation and a warm personality. 

      Charity gave Carmilla a list of items that she wanted in her new home.  A nice-size kitchen with a dishwasher, a fenced-in backyard large enough for Bobby to play in, 3 bedrooms, and 1 ½ bath, a basement with a washer and dryer hookup, and a garage.  A fireplace would be a bonus, but not a deal-breaker if the house had everything else on her wishlist.

      House hunting turned out to be a fun adventure.  She enjoyed exploring the homes Carmilla had chosen for her to check out.  She was pleasantly surprised her realtor wasn’t pushy or overbearing. 

      Instead, she was professional and knowledgeable in just about everything a new homeowner wanted to know.  The features of the homes, the school system, grocery stores, banks, and crime in the area.  You name it, Carmilla knew about it.

      There was just one problem.  It was a seller's market. Most homes meeting the criteria on Charity’s wishlist were out of her price range. 

      After viewing house after house, Charity got discouraged.  She wondered if she would have to settle for a place that didn't have all of the features she wanted.  It was frustrating because she felt her list wasn't extensive or unreasonable. 

      One morning Carmilla called about a house that had just come on the market. She told Charity it not only had everything on her wishlist but also met her price point.  Charity could hear the excitement in her voice when describing her discovery.  She agreed to go see the house without hesitation. 

      Carmilla contacted the seller’s realtor and made an appointment to see the house that very morning.  She picked up Charity and drove to the east side of town. 

      A warm feeling washed over Charity as soon as she saw the white house with blue shutters.  She was surprised by the warm feeling that washed over her as soon as she stepped inside. 

      The more she saw the more convinced she was that this was the home of her dreams.  It wasn't just another cookie-cutter-style house. It had personality.  Each room had a unique architectural style she adored, which reinforced her initial attraction. 

      The living room was spacious and had a wood-burning fireplace.  The master bedroom had a gorgeous master bathroom with a whirlpool tub.  Bobby could have his choice of the other two bedrooms.  One had off-white walls and the other was painted blue.  Charity had an idea which one her son would choose.

      She was pleased to see new appliances and cabinets in the kitchen.  It also boasted plenty of counter space, a gorgeous island, and a decorative backsplash. 

      Although she didn’t have it on her wishlist, she was thrilled to discover this home came with a finished basement.  Bobby could use it to escape when he wanted to play video games or hang out with his friends.  The backyard was huge and had a nice-sized patio that overlooked a beautiful garden. 

      There was no denying it.  This home had been designed with love and care.  It was the perfect place to raise a family.  Plus, it was in her price range.  Charity wasted no time telling Carmilla to submit her offer right away.

      About 30 days later, Charity and Bobby packed their bags and moved to the east side of town.  The two were overjoyed and couldn’t contain their excitement. 

      Finding out she was approved for a loan had been exciting for Charity but moving into their new home brought a feeling that was hard to describe.

      Moving Day also meant it was time for Charity to fulfill a promise she’d made to her son.  On Friday afternoon, she picked him up at his new school and took him shopping.  Not for clothes or toys, but for a puppy. Bobby had wanted one for a long time, but her lease at the apartment complex didn't allow pets.
