Move Every Mountain - Shamiro Anita

    Introduction

Life is not always a smooth ride. There are some good days and some bad. There are days that you don’t feel like getting out of bed. Other days you are so down and hurt, that you don’t know how you are going to make it. I, like all of you, am no stranger to these ups and downs of life. I have experienced many obstacles in my life. Some felt like mountains. I am pretty sure I will be facing more new mountains as I move ahead in my life as well. I am sure that you have faced your share of mountains too; situations that seemed impossible; hurts that went so deep you are still feeling it years later. Maybe you are facing a difficult situation right now. And even if you are not, sooner or later, a mountain is going to appear. God never said that we would have trouble-free lives. The purpose of this book is to encourage and remind you that there is a valley of rest and peace beyond the mountain where God wants to bring you. The mountains that we face in life can be overwhelming, so high and frightening that we forget there is that place beyond the mountain where we will find peace and tranquility. The mountain you are facing right now didn’t arise from out of nowhere. God placed that mountain in your life for a reason; He has a purpose with that mountain. Jeremiah 29:11 gives us insight into God’s plan: ‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’ God’s plans for you are always good; the end result will always be good for those who love God. After we climb the mountain, with God’s help, we turn out stronger than before.

It may seem like your troubles are exactly that, troubling. But God sees them as stepping stones to bring you closer to Him and to make you stronger in faith, hope, and love. I want to encourage you to remember that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us (Phil. 4:13). The mountain may look like Mount Everest, almost impossible to climb, and if you try, you might not survive. It may discourage you from even trying, but remember that your source of strength is infinite—God Himself. He will not only guide you to the top of the mountain and then back down, but He will also give you the strength and stamina to do it. Why? God loves you more than you think. His love is unconditional. Have you ever stood still and let that sink in? Let’s take a moment to think about that. Unconditional means you cannot do anything to make God love you more or less. The Bible says the greatest act of love is to give your life for someone else. We normally imagine jumping in front of a car or taking a bullet for somebody. That can be one scenario, but it also means to live a life of sacrificial love for somebody else. A mother taking care of her handicapped child all the days of his life; cleaning him, feeding him, caring for him even in his twenties, thirties, forties, and beyond is one of the greatest acts of love you can do for someone else. Or teachers in a tough school in a rough neighborhood with students who don’t see the value in learning, who are earning minimum wage and might even get mugged by the very students they are trying to help. All those and many more are sacrificial ways to show love for others.

God did the greatest act of love in the history of mankind. He sacrificed His son for you and me. Jesus came to earth to save us. He came knowing that some would reject Him, deny Him, testify falsely against Him, persecute Him, beat Him, spit in His face, put a crown of thorns on His head, and finally nail Him to a cross. He knew that even after He rose from the dead, some still wouldn’t believe and would make fun of His followers, would torture them, and finally kill them. God knew this from the start, yet still, He chose to come to earth to save us. That’s how much God loves you and me. Nothing you do will ever diminish the love God has for you. If God was willing to sacrifice His only Son to save us, don’t you think that He is more than willing and capable of moving all of the mountains in our lives? The answer is YES. I hope and pray that at the end of this book, your faith will be rekindled, and your hope will explode. That no matter what happens or whatever situation you may be going through, no matter what kind of obstacle there might be in your way, you will know and believe God has not forgotten you, and His love for you will move every mountain in your life.

Join me on this journey as we hike across the vast mountains of life. I cannot promise that it will be easy, and it might take a long time before we get across some of these mountains. I can promise you that our Guide can be trusted 100 percent to bring us over every single one of those mountains. The only gear that you will need for this trip are faith, hope, and perseverance. Let the journey begin!

Chapter 1: The Mountain of Doubt

But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. (James 1:6, NIV)

Before my sister got married, she had many doubts. These doubts frustrated her; they consumed her joy. Every day, she struggled with every decision that seemed to have a long-term impact. The guy who had asked her to marry him was a great guy. He was faithfully serving God; he was active in the church. Our pastor and family gave him our approval. But my sister also had a list of requirements. It was a list of all the characteristics any man who wanted to marry her should have in order to stand a chance of getting a yes from her. She decided a man would have to score at least 80 percent to qualify. Talk about harsh. I admired her resolve, though.

I would encourage everyone to make a similar list and pray that God sends you someone who best fits that list. Don’t think that God ignores your opinions and feelings. He considers all of them. But always remember to leave room for God’s opinions and recommendations as well. Although I found the list an excellent idea, I believe it contributed somewhat to the doubts she was having. Due to her inflexibility with this list, her heart was filled with uncertainty whether God had actually guided her in making the list. Maybe she was being too hard on herself, setting unrealistic standards. This resulted in great frustration. The Bible says in James 1:6, But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. A doubt-filled person is like a wave. The wind determines everything about the wave. It controls the wave’s every move. The wave is tossed and thrown in any direction the wind wants.

The wind is like circumstances of life.

A person filled with doubt is controlled by the circumstances of their lives. When a happy situation comes around, they are happy.

When times become sad, they are sad. People influence them very easily because they are unstable. They have no solid ground to stand upon. Are you like this? Peter, one of the 12 disciples of Jesus, was. One time, the disciples had gotten into a boat and left Jesus on the shore. During their voyage, a huge storm appeared from out of nowhere. Then suddenly, through the thick darkness and loud thunder, they saw the figure of a man walking toward them on the water. It was Jesus. At first, they were afraid. Jesus told them, It is I! Do not be afraid! (Matt. 14:27, AMP). Peter asked to walk on the water as well, toward Jesus. Jesus said, Come. Peter reluctantly put one foot onto the surface of the water, and for the first time in his life, he felt pressure against his feet. It felt like any other stone floor. He put his other foot over, and finally he was standing on both feet on the water. He struggled, trying to find his balance. After a moment, he started to move forward. He moved carefully. Step by step getting closer to Jesus. His eyes were fixed on Jesus. Suddenly there was another crack of thunder. Peter lost his focus and took his eyes off Jesus. It was as if the lighting had struck reality back into his senses. The solid feeling was gone. The pressure was instantly off, and Peter started to sink fast. He was being tossed and turned by the waves. He was at the mercy of the strong winds until Jesus stretched out his hand and pulled him back up onto his feet and into the boat. Jesus told him, You of little faith. Why did you doubt?

At first, everything had gone well. Why did he start to sink? He doubted. For a split second, he stopped believing that God can bend the laws of nature, including gravity. Even though the first few seconds went fine, he lost his concentration; doubt crept in, and he started to go down. He was at the mercy of the winds. That is what doubt does. It puts you in an unstable position. It fills you with uncertainty. You can struggle against it all you want, but eventually, you will lose strength and sink below the surface. At this point, your doubt leads to anxiety, then despair, and finally, depression. It feels like you are stuck or like you are struggling without succeeding; fighting without winning; moving without going anywhere. How do we overcome doubt? We fix our eyes on Jesus. We concentrate on His presence. We trust in His promises. We keep believing. What happens then? You are no longer at the mercy of the winds. Your mood or decisions are no longer determined or influenced by your
