Season of Stability - Patricia M. Robertson
Season of Stability – Introduction
What is so ordinary about Ordinary Time? An ordinary day? Is there ever such a thing? Each moment of every day is fraught with potential and yet we fritter away those moments, unaware of all that surrounds us. Nothing is ordinary in God’s eye. The hand of God touches all creation. That reality shines forth, if we are open to it. Each day we touch the face of God in the ordinary wonder of life, the song of a bird, the smile of a child, a lover’s kiss, the hot-flash of mid-life, and the last breath of a live well-lived. All of this is the stuff
of life. It is full of God’s promise.
There is no ordinary day or ordinary person. God is present in all of the ordinary aspects of our days; God is present in each of us. This makes us extraordinary.
Far too often in our churches we neglect the ordinary. We spend so much energy on the big
celebrations of the year, Advent/Christmas, Lent/Easter, yet most of our life is lived in Ordinary Time. We know so little about how to appreciate this time and live it well. How little we appreciate the wonder of ordinary life, an ordinary day, an ordinary person.
I relish the ordinary, stable times of life when I am not planning for any big celebration or coping with any major crisis. In the roller coaster of life, I welcome these stretches of flat land. It’s a relief to just live each day as they come. But the stable times in your life do not mean stagnation. They can be times for long range planning, dreaming dreams, planting seeds for future change, and getting the job done. These cannot be done amid major changes and disruptions.
Ordinary times are important times in raising children. Routines fill each day: getting up, changing diapers, fixing meals, keeping them from running out into the street or eating poisonous items as they go about their day. Small children need lots of time for exploring their environment, trying out new skills, learning to trust their legs to hold them and walk, trying out new flavors of food. These are times for learning and teaching, developing and perfecting skills that will help them later in life. These are times that can give them a sense of stability, security and discipline that will sustain them as adults. They can be times to focus on what is important; times for deepening, living life to the fullest, not just coping or surviving. They provide fertile ground for spiritual growth.
The greens of this season reflect this growth. The green of the grass and the leaves all around us are rich and plentiful. There are also a number of wonderful feast days to celebrate during this time, just as we celebrate birthdays.
The Catholic Church sets aside two stretches of each year as part of ordinary time: one during the winter and a longer stretch during summer and fall. During this time the priest wears green vestments and altar cloths are green. The length of the season reflects the reality that we spend most of our days in ordinary life.
All the biblical quotes included here reflect the themes of Ordinary Time. Some are from the liturgies and some are personal favorites gleaned from the abundance of inspiration found in Scripture. They were chosen to help you enter the peace, contentment, and stability of the ordinary.
One of the challenges of writing a book of reflections on Ordinary Time is that the dates for the beginning and ending of this time varies every year, depending on when the Lent and Easter season begin and end. I’ve tried to insert various feast days whose dates do not change in the approximate right place. Please roam around among the reflections as the spirit moves you.
Read the meditations all at once or day by day. Read them repeatedly. Each meditation can be a self-contained
moment of encouragement and prayer or a springboard to a longer period of reflection. Let the Scripture soak into your being. If you feel so moved, find the quotation in your Bible and read more from that prophet or poet.
May this selection of meditations on the ordinary in our lives help you grow in your appreciation of that which is stable and secure. May they lead to deeper growth in your spiritual life and help you put down roots in that which is most important and life giving for you.
ORDINARY TIME - WINTER
Interlude
––––––––
There is a time between Christmas and Lent, a time called ordinary time. Time to get back to work after the holidays, back to the basics of everyday living. December meetings postponed and rescheduled for January occur, one after the other after the other. There is a mad rush to get caught up. The workaholic, frustrated from having work items put on hold while others were out for the holiday, has the chance to work to their heart’s delight. We try to make up for lost time and end up swamped with unanswered emails, correspondence, and bills.
Still it’s good to be back to normalcy, whatever that is.

Thus all the work of Solomon was accomplished from the day the foundation of the house of the Lord was laid until the house of the Lord was finished completely. 2 Chronicles 8:16
Grey Days
––––––––
We are into the grey days of winter. The holidays are over and so, it appears, is the snow. Such are the vagaries of Michigan winters. Days of beautiful snow-covered ground or ice coated trees give way to grime and grey. A coat of soot covers the snow, or the snow melts during the January thaw. The thaw is but an illusion as we
