    Prologue

To the Lord of Golden Rock

There once lived men who ate other men. Not that they knew what they were doing. They weren’t in their right mind, nor were they in their right body. The wolves that ate the farmer’s sheep were nothing compared to these men. These men will run forth into the town of Golden Rock and slaughter hundreds of people. These men cannot be reasoned with. These men cannot see logic. These men cannot feel remorse. These men are not men. These men are animals. No known mortal weapon can harm them. No force can stop them and no food can quench their hunger.

Though only a few souls know that they are men, you may wonder how can this be. The answer is one that almost none would believe. Any who called them men would be cast off as mad. They would think them crazy. However, deep down the people know that I speak the truth, that this is not legend, this is reality.

The stories they heard as children were not stories at all but facts. No one wants to embrace that the impossible may be possible, because if they did their reality would collapse. They would no longer know what was truth and what was a lie. They would fear what was now unknown.

So they live in denial. For they will never accept the extraordinary, not even if they see it with their own eyes. Unfortunately that denial will be their doom. The men who eat other men are out there. They’re hungry for blood. For all the people know; they could be walking among them right now. Disguised as your neighbour, a friendly traveller, trying to hide the monster within. When we think of them as human they walk among us. However when we think of them as monsters; they become their true selves, wolves. The men who eat other men are wolves but they are also men. This is a truth that most cannot accept.

When the moon becomes full these men transform into wolves.

No one has seen the change they see them as wolves and nothing more. But wolves the size of horses. Do wolves have an impenetrable pelt? Do wolves have an endless hunger for human flesh? Do wolves only appear at a full moon?

The people already know that these are werewolves they just cannot accept it. Please heed my warning. Get everyone out of Golden Rock while you still can. You must act quickly, for when they come, they will show no mercy.

    Chapter One

    The Redclaw Family

In this world of fantasy there was a town called Dark Oak (a small village that earns most of its funds by cutting down and selling the surrounding trees - hence the name Dark Oak) that was built in the deepest, darkest woods in the area. This town was one of many in the Kingdom of Unitopia. Many who live there dream of leaving and journeying to the capital of Unitopia: Castle Vemork. That is where Queen Luna Lightstorm lives alongside the rest of the royal family. Every child wished that they could be a royal as they were the richest and the most powerful people in all of the land.

The people of Dark Oak were not so lucky. They were the poorest town in the kingdom and struggled each year to survive the winter. In this town lives a young seventeen year old teenager by the name of Jonathan Redclaw. He lives with his father, Benjamin Redclaw, in a small cabin at the edge of the town. Benjamin is the town’s chief hunter and provides almost all the meat for the butcher. Jonathan aspires to be just like his father and one day become the greatest hunter in the world. Like his father he has dark brown hair and blue eyes and wears his hunting habit of brown pants, a throwing knife belt, a grey shirt and a satchel.

Despite his terrible archery skills Jonathan is a brilliant tracker and is rather good with a knife (both throwing and skinning). The boy’s mother, Katrina Redclaw, was also a hunter and a good one at that. She met Benjamin when they were both very young and they were married a short time later. Sadly, only three months after Jonathan was born, she was killed by a brown bear whilst on a hunting trip. Since that day Benjamin has raised Jonathan alone. It hasn’t always been easy but Benjamin is the most wonderful father to Jonathan. The two live and train together as if it is them against the world.

One morning, three days before the winter season broke, Jonathan awoke from his bed and ran downstairs to see his father. When he arrived he couldn’t find him. Benjamin was nowhere in sight. That was when Jonathan noticed a piece of parchment on the dining table next to a hot bowl of oatmeal.

It said: "Jonathan, because winter is almost upon us I have left the house early in order to get a head start on my daily hunting trip, so that we might have plenty of food for the winter. I have already made you your breakfast as you can see. Make sure you eat it all and while I’m gone continue practicing your archery skills. I’ll be home by nightfall. Have
