ISAIAH 43:22
Sing to the Lord a new song, his praise from the end of the earth. Let the sea and what fills it resound the coastlands, and those who dwell in them.
I will lay waste mountains and hills, all their herbage
I will dry up;
I will turn the rivers into marshes, and the marshes I will dry up.
I will lead the blind on their journey; by paths unknown I will guide them.
I will turn darkness into light before them, and make crooked ways straight.
These things I do for them, and I will not forsake them.
They shall be turned back in utter shame who trust in idols;
Who say to molten images; You are our gods.
You who are deaf, listen.
You who are blind, look and see!
Who is blind but my servant or deaf like the messenger I send?
You see many things without taking note; your ears are open, but without hearing.
Though it pleased the land in his justice to make his law great and glorious.
This is a people despoiled and plundered, all of them trapped in holes, hidden away in prisons.
They are taken as booty, with no one to rescue them, as spoil, with no one to demand their return.
Chapter 1
It is a picturesque breezy August Sunday afternoon in Norfolk Virginia. Birds are chirping, lawn mowers are running. A soft gust of wind blows a fall leaf swiftly through the air as it gently lands on the grass in front of the window of a black gospel church. Nothing but singing and piano playing is filling the Sunday air. The altitude of the choir’s singing is bringing everyone in the church to their feet. Everyone is clapping and smiling while the choir rejoices the song of praise and worship uplifting the church with their music. As the choir comes to the end of their song we see a middle-aged black man with a suit on that could only have been specially ordered from the best stylist in the state. He stands up slowly with his eyes shut and one hand to the lights of heaven with a relaxing smile of joy on his face. This is Reverend James who is the church’s Pastor and is very much pleased with himself, the choir, and his dedicated congregation.
Let us say amen. Let us say amen again. I certainly feel good and my great choir has ended our service today with my spirits high and I hope yours as well, let us all stand up on our feet and say thank you Lord!
Everyone in the church stood up with excitement and said loudly and in unison;
Thank you, Lord!
Reverend James looks around at all his dedicated congregation and with a clearing of his voice he begins to speak again.
"Before I let you leave today we have a young Navy man who will be going out to sea. Petty Officer Odell
