Night Flight by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (Book Analysis) - Bright Summaries

    French writer, poet and aviator

    Born in Lyon in 1900.

Presumed to have died off the coast of Corsica in 1944.

    Notable works:

    Southern Mail (1929), novel

Wind, Sand and Stars (1939), memoir

    The Little Prince (1943), novella

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry flew an aeroplane for the first time at the tender age of 12, and immortalised his feelings about the experience in a poem. He never lost his love of writing, and rubbed shoulders with many other writers while living in Paris many years later. In 1926, he began working as a pilot for an airborne postal company founded by Pierre Latécoère (French aeronautical pioneer, 1883-1943), which was renamed the Compagnie Générale Aéropostale the following year. During his time there, he made his mark on the history of postal aviation by helping to establish the first commercial aerial route between Europe and South America, working under the guidance of Didier Daurat (French aviator, 1891-1969). Saint-Exupéry disappeared in 1944 during a reconnaissance flight over Corsica for the Allied forces in World War II (1939-1945), and is presumed to have been killed in action.

Many of his works were autobiographical in nature, including Night Flight (1931), Flight to Arras (1942), Letter to a Hostage (1944), and The Wisdom of the Sands (1948). His most successful works are Wind, Sand and Stars (1939), which won the prestigious Grand Prix du roman de l’Académie française, and The Little Prince (1943), which is one of the best-selling works of fiction of all time.
