About this ebook

This is a translation by Dr. Edward Hammond.
The First Book of Enoch was lost for centuries to the western world although it was kept by the Ethiopian church. In 1773 the Scottish explorer James Bruce heard that the Book of Enoch may have been in Ethiopia so traveled there and procured three copies. In 1821 Richard Laurence, a professor of Hebrew at Oxford, produced the first English translation. Fragments of ten Enoch manuscripts were found among the Dead Sea Scrolls. It is quoted by New  Testament Book of Jude.
This book contains all sections of The First Book of Enoch:
The Book of the Watchers
The Book of Parables of Enoch
The Astronomical Book
The Book of Dream Visions
The Epistle of Enoch
It is of particular interest to anyone with an interest in angels and demons, or Bible history in general.
The Books of Enoch: The Complete Set also contains 2 Enoch (also known as The Slavonic Enoch, or The Secrets of Enoch) and contains the Extended Version; and 3 Enoch (also known as The Hebrew Book of Enoch.)
Dr. Edward Hammond used to teach Hebrew and Greek. He is a retired Minister who has a Doctor of Theology and has appeared on television and radio speaking about antiquities and archaeology.

    About Dr. Edward Hammond

    Introduction

The Book of Enoch was lost for centuries to the western world although it was kept by the Ethiopian church.

The Book of Enoch is also known as First Enoch as there are two other books of Enoch, one known as The Second Book of Enoch (which is also known as Slavonic Enoch), and other as The Third Book of Enoch. The Book of Enoch is also called the Ethiopic Enoch.

The original texts have never been discovered, and scholars agree that the Book of Enoch is the work of several authors.

The Book of Enoch is not in the Biblical Canon. However, the Book of Enoch is quoted in the New Testament Book of Jude:

Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard [speeches] which ungodly sinners have spoken against him. (King James Version.)

In the fourth century CE, the Bishop of Brescia, Philastrius, declared The Book of Enoch to be heresy. In the second century C.E. Rabbi Simeon ben Jochai pronounced a curse upon anyone who believed The Book of Enoch to be true. On the other hand the 2nd century Athenagoras' work Legatio showed heavy dependence on the Book of Enoch. The early Christian Epistle of Barnabas quotes The Book of Enoch and describes it as Scripture.

Enoch was the son of Jared, the great grandfather of Noah and father of Methuselah. The Enoch of The Book of Enoch is not the same man as the Enoch who was the oldest son of Cain, the son of Adam and Eve.

The Book of Enoch gives a very detailed account of the Watchers in its first section, The Book of the Watchers. Watchers were a type of angel sent to earth by God. They went against their orders by teaching men weapons, enchantments, root cuttings, the workings of metals, astrology and astronomy. The Watchers also married human women and their offspring were the greatly feared Nephilim, a word which is often mistranslated in many Bibles as Giants.

God then gave the decree to punish the Watchers and they were thrown into Tartarus to be punished by fire.

The Book of Parables of Enoch is the next section of The Book of Enoch and it tells of three parables in lengthy detail. It is followed by The Astronomical Book which tells of the course of the sun, moon and stars at great length and again in great detail. Four fragmentary editions of this were found at Qumran.

The next section, The Book of Dream Visions, is believed by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church to have been written before the Flood. Enoch's dream visions give a history of Israel down to the Maccabean Revolt. The last section is The Epistle of Enoch.

I must make mention of a common misconception which appears on several internet sites about The Book of Enoch. These sites state that evidence for the early Christians' acceptance of The Book of Enoch was hidden under the King James Version's mistranslation of Luke 9:35: And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, 'This is my beloved Son: hear him.' The internet sites allege that the verse in the original Greek reads: This is my Son, the Elect One, hear him, and allege that the word in question is the Greek ho eklelegmenos, which they state literally means the Elect One. They further state that as the English words the Elect One appear fourteen times in The Book of Enoch, then Luke must be referring to Enoch.

This is the truth of the matter. Firstly, the King James Version of Luke 9:35 is not a mistranslation but a textual variation. The King James Version here translated from a manuscript which had the Greek word agapetos which does mean dearly beloved, whereas most modern Bibles translate from a manuscript which instead of agapetos has ho eklelegmenos. Again, ho eklelegmenos does not occur in the King James Version of Luke 9:35.

Secondly, ho eklelegmenos literally means the one who has been chosen. Elect is an old English word meaning chosen, but it is not chosen one as a title by any means. The lack of knowledge of ancient Greek has led people to jump to this mistaken conclusion.

The same word appears in Matthew 20:16 and 22:14 in the well known passage, For many are called but few are chosen. Clearly it is not a title here. In Romans 16:13 Rufus is called the chosen one. The word simply refers to anyone who has been chosen. There are over twenty examples in the New Testament.

    The Book of the Watchers

    1:1-9.

The word of the blessing of Enoch, how he blessed the chosen ones and the righteous, who will be living in the day of tribulation, when all the wicked men will be removed.

Enoch was a righteous man, whose eyes were opened by God, and saw a vision of the holy one in the heavens which the angels showed me and I heard everything from them, and I understood that it will not take place in this generation, but in a generation of the future. I spoke with him concerning the chosen ones. The holy and mighty one will come forth from his dwelling and the everlasting God will tread on the earth, on Mount Sinai, appearing with his hosts, and appear with the strength of his might from heaven. All shall be smitten with fear, and the Watchers shall shake. Great fear and trembling shall seize them unto the ends of the earth. The high mountains shall be shaken, and the high hills shall be brought low, and shall melt like wax in the flame. The earth shall be torn asunder, and all shall perish in it, and there shall be judgment upon all men. He shall give peace to the righteous and safeguard the chosen and his mercy shall be upon them. Then they shall all belong to God and they will be prosperous and blessed and his light will appear to them. The Lord comes with tens of thousands of his holy ones, to carry out judgments on all men, to examine every soul among them who has committed ungodly acts, about their profane acts, and about all the wicked things that evil sinners have said about him.

    2:1-3

Observe that the heavenly luminaries do not change their paths, that each rises and sets regularly at the appointed time, without wandering off from their appointed order. Observe the earth, what happens there, from the beginning to the end, how nothing changes, but the work of God is manifest. Observe the summer and winter, how the whole earth is full of water, and that the cloud, the dew, and the rain lie upon it.

    3:1.

And observe how every tree appears to wither and shed its leaves, except for fourteen trees, which do not lose their leaves but keep their old foliage for two or three winters until the new leaves appear.

    4:1.

And again, observe the days of summer, how the sun is on it at the very beginning, while you seek a covered and shaded place by reason of the burning sun. The earth burns with searing heat, and you cannot walk on the ground or the rocks by reason of the heat.

    5:6-9.

Observe how the trees cover themselves with green leaves and bear fruit thereof. Observe then that he who lives for ever has made all these works, and that his works continue from year to year, and that all the tasks they do for him do not change, but things are brought to pass according to the appointment of God.

Observe how the seas and the rivers do according to their appointment. And you have not been steadfast, nor have you carried out the commandments of the Lord, but you have done wrongly and spoken words of pride and meanness with your polluted mouths against the greatness of God. You obstinate one, no peace will come to you. Therefore you will curse your days, and the years of your life shall perish, and you shall be the object of manifest and everlasting cursing, that you will not find mercy.

In those times, all the righteous will consider your names to be a hateful curse, and all who curse will curse by you. All the sinners and the unrighteous will imprecate by you, and for you, the godless, there shall be a curse. Then they will rejoice, and there will be forgiveness for wrongdoings, and mercy, peace and forbearance. There will be rescue for them, a good light. But on you all there shall rest a curse. But for the chosen there will be light, grace, peace, and they will inherit the earth.

Wisdom will be given to the elect. They will live and not sin whether through impiety or pride, but the wise ones will be humble. They will not sin again for the rest of their lives. They will not die as result of anger or wrath, but shall live out the full days of their lives. They will grow old with peace, while their lives will increase with happiness, and with peace, for all the days of their lives.

    6:1-8.

It happened after the sons of men had multiplied, that in those times daughters were born to them, and they saw that they were comely and beautiful.

When the angels, the sons of heaven, saw them, they desired them and said to each other, Come on, let us choose wives for ourselves from the sons of men, and let us begat progeny.

Then their leader Semjaza said to them, I fear that you will not agree to do this deed, and that I alone shall have to pay the penalty for such a great sin.

And they answered him and said, Let us all swear an oath, and bind ourselves by mutual imprecations, that we will not change our minds but do this deed.

And they swore all together and bound themselves by mutual imprecations. They were two hundred in number that descended in the time of Jared, on the summit of Mount Hermon. They called it Mount Hermon because they had sworn an oath on it and bound themselves by mutual imprecations.

These are the names of their leaders: Semjaza, who was their leader, Arakiba, Rameel, Kokaqbiel, Ramuel, Tamiel, Ramiel, Danel, Ezeqeel, Baraqijal, Asael, Armaros, Batarerl, Ananel, Zaqiel, Samsapeel, Satarei, Turel, Jomjael, Sariel. These were the leaders of the groups of ten.

    7:1-6.

They and the rest took wives, each one for himself. They went into them and defiled themselves with them and they taught them charms and pharmacies, the cutting of roots, and the uses of plants.

The women became with child and produced Nephilim whose height was three hundred cubits. They consumed everything that the sons of men produced. When the sons of men could no longer sustain them, they turned against them and consumed mankind. They began to sin against birds, beasts, reptiles, and fish, and to devour each other’s flesh, and to drink their blood. Then the earth laid accusation against the lawless ones.

    8:1-4.

Azazel taught the sons of men to make swords, knives, shields, breastplates, and showed them metals of the earth and the art of metals, and bracelets and ornaments, the use of antimony and paint, the beautifying of the eyes, the use of all kinds of gemstones, and all kinds of coloring dyes. Then did godlessness increase, and they committed fornication, and everything they did was corrupt.

Semjaza taught enchantments, and root cuttings, Armaros taught the resolving of enchantments, Baraqijal taught astrology, Kokabel taught the constellations, Ezeqeel taught the knowledge of the clouds, Araqiel the signs of the earth, Shamseil the signs of the sun, and Sareil the course of the moon. And as the sons of men perished, they cried out, and their voice reached heaven.

    9:1-11.

And Michael, Uriel, Raphael, and Gabriel looked down from heaven and saw much blood being shed upon earth, and all the unrighteousness that was upon the earth. They said one to another, The earth deprived of her sons has cried as far as the gate of heaven. And now the souls of men complain to you, O holy ones of heaven. They say, Bring our case to the Most High. Then they said to their Lord, You are Lord of lords, God of gods, King of kings. The throne of your glory lasts forever and ever more, and your name is holy, magnificent, and blessed forever and ever more. You have made everything and you have power over everything, everything is open and clear before you. You see everything, and nothing can be hidden from you.

"You see what Azazel has done, how he has taught all unrighteousness on earth, and has revealed to the world all the secrets which are done in the heavens which the sons of men were keen to know and also Semjaza, to whom you have given authority over his associates. They have gone together to the daughters of men, have wedded them, and have defiled themselves with them, and have revealed sin to them. And the daughters of men have given birth to Nephilim, and so the whole earth has been filled with blood and unrighteousness. And now the souls of those who are dead cry out and complain, even to the gates of heaven. Their cries ascend. It cannot stop due to the unrighteousness which is committed on earth.

You know everything before it happens. You know these things, and what has been done by them, yet you do not say to us what we are supposed to do about it?

    10:1-22.

Then the Most High, the holy great one spoke and sent Uriel to the son of Lamech, and said to him, Go and tell him in my name, ‘Hide yourself’, then explain to him that which is about to happen, that the whole earth will be destroyed, that a deluge of a flood will cover the whole earth, and everything in it will be destroyed. And now tell him how he may escape, and how his descendants may remain for all generations on the earth.

And again the Lord said to Raphael, Bind Azazel hand and foot, cast him into the darkness and make an opening in the desert which is in Dudael, and cast him in there. Put him on stones coarse and pointed, and cover his face with darkness. Let him stay there forever, and cover his face so he cannot see the light. And in the great Day of Judgment he will be thrown into the fire. Heal the earth, which the angels have corrupted, and proclaim the healing of it, that they may restore it and so that the sons of men may not perish as a result of all the secrets of the Watchers, and which they have taught to their seed. All the earth has been corrupted by the works that were taught by Azazel and all the sin may be ascribed to him.

The Lord said to Gabriel, Go to the bastards and to the reprobates and to the children of fornication, and destroy them, the seed of the Watchers, from among the sons of men, and send them one against one another so that they will perish by killing one another, for they will not have length of days. And no request that they make of you will be granted on their behalf. They hope for eternal life to yet each one of them will live for five hundred years.

The Lord said to Michael, "Go, bind Semjaza and his associates who have gone into the daughters of men and so have defiled themselves. And when their sons have slain one another, and they have seen the destruction of their beloved ones, bind them for seventy generations in the valleys of the earth, until the day of their judgment and of their end, until the judgment that lasts forever is completed. In those times they will be taken away to the abyss of the fire and of the torment and they will be shut in prison forever and ever more. Immediately after this he will, together with them, be condemned and destroyed, and they will be bound together for generation after generations.

"Destroy all the lustful spirits, and the seed of the Watchers, for they have wronged mankind. Let all oppressors perish from the face of the earth and let every evil work be destroyed. Let the plant of righteousness and of truth appear and become a blessing. Righteousness and truth shall be forever planted with enjoyment. And then all the devoted men will be thankful, and live until they have produced a thousand sons, all the days of their youth, and their old age will be completed in peace.

Then shall the whole earth will be cultivated with righteousness, and will be planted with trees and be filled with blessings. And all desirable trees will be planted on it and they will plant vines on it, and the vines which they plant will yield much wine. Every seed which is sown on it will produce a thousand measures for one measure, and produce ten presses of oil for one measure of olives.

Cleanse the earth from all trials, from all unrighteousness, from all sin, from all godlessness, and from all the uncleanness which is committed on it. Destroy it off from the earth. Then all the sons of men will be righteous, and all nations will reverence me and praise me, and all will worship me. The earth will be cleansed from all defilement, from all sin, from all punishment, and from all torment, and I will never again send torment on it for generation after generation, forever.

    11:1-2.

In those days I will open the storehouses of blessing which are in heaven, so as to make them descend on earth over all the work and labor of mankind. Peace and truth will be associated with mankind for all the days of the world, in every generation.

    12:1-6.

Before all these things, Enoch was hidden, and none of the sons of men knew where he was hidden, where he abode, and what had happened. His days were with the holy ones, and his doings with the Watchers.

And I, Enoch, was praising the Lord of majesty and King of the ages, when the Watchers called me - Enoch the scribe - and said to me, Enoch, you scribe of righteousness, go and tell the Watchers of heaven, who have deserted the high heaven, the holy everlasting place, who have been defiled with women and have done as the sons of men do, by taking wives for themselves, ‘You have greatly caused destruction on the earth. You will never have peace or forgiveness of sin. You will have no delight in your seed, for you will see the murder of their loved ones, and you will lament for the destruction of your sons. You can make supplication forever, but you will not obtain mercy or peace.

    13:1-10.

Then Enoch went and said to Azazel, You will not find peace; a severe sentence has gone out against you, that you are to be bound. You will find no tolerance, mercy, or requests granted to you, because of the unrighteousness which you have taught, because of every work of blasphemy, unrighteousness, and wrongdoing, which you have shown to mankind.

Then I went from there and spoke to them all together, and they were afraid, and fear and trembling seized them. They asked me to draw up a petition for them so that they might find forgiveness, and for me to read their petition in the presence of the Lord of heaven. For from then on they could not address him, or lift up their eyes to heaven on account of the appalling offense for which they were condemned.

Then I wrote out their petition and the prayer for their spirits, for everything which they had done, and in regard to their requests, that they should have forgiveness and rest. Then I continued on and sat down at the waters of Dan, in
