      Introduction

      I don't know you, but I bet if you are a Christian you have wished for a burning bush. Maybe not literally a bush in your yard that caught fire, but a metaphorical burning bush in that you wish God would talk to you. When life gets hard and the week outlasts the paycheck, the kids are testing the very limits of human patience, or the boss wants the impossible, you long for an audible voice from God that would tell you what to do. Should I buy this house? Is it wise to pursue a major career change right now? When the kids say they are not giving in to peer pressure and drinking, or worse, are they telling the truth?

      Try as you might to find it, every problem we have is not specifically covered by an exact Scripture. I would LOVE to turn to Answers 13:26 and read, Thou shalt not purchase a house or a car if thoust motivation is only to keep up with the Jones', but there is no book in the Bible called Answers that quickly and directly spells out what we should do in every possible situation (believe me, I've looked).

      This is not to say that the Bible does not speak to our daily needs: the answers are in there, trust me. It's just that in this 21st century instant-gratification-life we have, filled with the complete knowledge of all mankind only as far away as our keyboards, we tend to forgo the concept of researching multiple Scripture passages to uncover what they would tell us. Instead we long for a burning bush to tell us, James, what are you thinking? You can't change careers at 43! You've got 19 years in and are at the top of the food chain at work. You should ride that out and not risk it. Now, I've got to be in a burning Hydrangea across town in 5 minutes, so see you next time. Good talk.

      As incredibly convenient as a crystal-clear resolution and immediate resolve would be in times of pressure or crisis, it is far from what God wants from us. Mankind has long treated and behaved as if God is a big genie in the sky. Need something? —ask God in prayer for whatever it is you need. In the instance He gives you exactly what you asked for, you’re apt to continue your life forgetting all about Him until the next time something is needed—only to get mad at Him if He doesn’t answer the way you would like; alas, He is not a genie in the sky. He is the Almighty-All-Powerful God that said a few mere words and entire planets suddenly existed where they did not only moments before. He gathered some dust (that He just MADE out of nothing!), breathed into it and it became a man; a living-breathing-thinking-talking man. This is the Almighty Creator we are talking about. So, when He wants more of a relationship with us that supersedes beyond just being a cosmic genie wish-granter, I would say He is entitled to it.

      The thing about God is that He is a creator. Not just that He created the planets, animals, people, and well, everything, but He is a creative God. When you look through the Bible at the things that have happened you will notice that He rarely did things the same way twice. There was only one worldwide flood, only one parting of the sea, only one time did He ask a man to sacrifice his son to test him, only once did He wrestle with a man and put his hip joint out, etc.

      Why this aversion to repetition? -because of us, that's why. You see, He knows us . Well. That's pretty fitting since He made us and all, but He really knows us. He knows our thoughts, deeds, intentions, and tendencies. He knows that we tend to try to simplify things down to a formula that is repeatable. If Jesus healed lepers by patting their cheek 3 different times in the New Testament every teenager with acne would be trying to get every pastor, priest, minister, or holy man in a 30 mile radius to slap them silly. We tend to dissect His actions, find the formula, and try to replicate it. Say these words, do these actions, and poof...results! Then it's no longer a miracle, it's a spell.

      So with this history of behavior, why do we always look to the things done before and look for them again? How many times have we wanted God to do something just like He did 2000 years ago, when we can almost never find Him doing the same thing twice? With this book I hope to look at some of these one-time events in the Bible with the goal of understanding what God wanted us
