About this ebook
Every Love Story Has a Beginning…
A first hello.
A first conversation.
A first kiss.
This is the story of how Maddie and Branch met…
After a string of bad relationships, Maddie Wells is done with men and the games that come along with dating them. No one would sway her decision, least of all Branch Kennedy. With his witty and presumptuous nature, he's exactly the kind of man Maddie swore she'd steer clear of. If only her heart would listen.
Under the Texas Sky is the first book in my How We Met series. Each book is a standalone novella and can be read in any order the reader wishes

Under the Texas Sky (A How We Met Novella) - M.K. Dawn
For my husband,
Thank you for your love, support and patience through this crazy dream of mine.
And for that day twelve years ago, for which this story is based...
CHAPTER ONE
THE LACK OF EXCITEMENT in Lila’s voice caught Maddie Wells off guard.
Well, he called. Finally.
Her best friend of five years (since sophomore year of college) had been impatiently waiting to hear from Wyatt for days.
So what’s the problem?
Maddie asked.
Lila shrugged, her ebony eyes trained on the wedding decorations they’d offered to help Maddie’s aunt assemble. Nothing. He asked me out. I said no. Whatever.
The lavender ribbon slipped through Maddie’s fingers and fell to the floor. Lila, why on earth would you do that? He’s all you’ve talked about since we met him and his friends last weekend!
That’s a bit of an exaggeration, don’t you think?
When it came to discussing the men in either of their lives, there was no such thing as a ‘bit of an exaggeration.’ It just so happened, Lila was the only one with a love life at the moment.
We had an hour and a half conversation about the way we met him, rehashing every detail from what he wore to what he meant when he said ‘that’.
Lila continued to fiddle with her arrangement. It wasn’t all about Wyatt. We also talked about the guy you were chit-chatting with. The burly one with the tattoos. What was his name again?
Maddie pressed her lips together and tried to suppress the bout of laughter bubbling up inside her. Not that she found the guy remotely funny. It was more of an annoyed chuckle. Like it matters. I won’t be seeing him again. He tried to kiss me. I wouldn’t let him and he got all pissy about it.
He wasn’t that hot anyway.
Which was their normal response when it didn’t work out with a guy.
By the look of him, I’m pretty sure he hits the steroids pretty hard,
Maddie added.
And he was intense. So not your type. You’re way too hot for him.
Another one of their classic responses.
Whatever.
With her rail, straight brown hair and dull eyes that matched, Maddie never felt hot. Most days she tried to fit into the pretty girl mold—perfect body, perfect hair, perfect everything—and the mold was two sizes too small. It was exhausting.
Lila passed Maddie a second roll of ribbon. You’ll find someone.
I’ve told you a thousand times, I’m off the market. Sworn off men for the foreseeable future. I’m tired of the games and misery.
The last guy Maddie dated didn’t end well. After a couple weeks, he asked her to be his date for an out-of-state wedding. She agreed, purchased her own plane ticket, and got nothing in return but cringe-worthy sex and a it’s not you it’s me
.
Instead of a quick retort, Lila scanned through her phone, which allowed Maddie a moment with her thoughts. Lila could always tell when Maddie’s mind wandered and gave her the time she needed to process her emotions before she inevitably shot her with the tough love. Now who’s being dramatic? And stop thinking about him. You didn’t even like him that much. If he wouldn’t have ended it, you were going to.
I just wish I’d beaten him to the punch.
Which wasn’t entirely true. After the breakup, Maddie was wounded. Even though she didn’t have strong feeling for the man, there was still some fondness there. And it would’ve been a nice change of pace to turn the tables and leave the guy wondering where the hell it all went wrong.
And you can’t swear off men. You’re twenty-four.
What does my age have to do with anything?
Maddie shifted uncomfortably on the couch then leaned against the TV trays they were using as a table.
You’re not getting any younger.
Maddie rolled her eyes. Speaking of not getting any younger, why did you turn down Wyatt?
Lila picked up her half-completed wreath and ignored the question. How many more of these do we have to make?
Ten tables, ten centerpieces. With my six and your half of one...
Shut up, you know I’m not crafty like you.
Maddie laughed. My aunt appreciates the help. On a Friday night, nonetheless.
It’s no big deal. I didn’t have any plans anyway.
But you could have. Now stop changing the subject and tell me why you turned Wyatt down.
It’s not like he asked me out for tonight.
What night did he ask you out for?
Lila’s expression softened. Tomorrow.
Saturday is classic date night. What’s the issue?
Lila placed her half-assembled centerpiece on the table. He didn’t ask me out for tomorrow night, but tomorrow during the day. Him and a group of his friends are heading up to his parents’ lake house and he asked me to tag along.
Now they were getting somewhere. Sounds like fun. You should go.
Lila’s eyes widened. I’ll have to wear a bathing suit in front of all those guys! You know how I feel about my thighs.
Lila, your thighs are fine as is the rest of your body. Seriously, you’re freaking hot. You have to go!
She dragged her fingers through her shoulder length black hair. Can you come with me?
Going to the lake with a bunch of strangers was the last thing Maddie wanted to do. She had a touch of social anxiety and it made her uncomfortable in small crowds. Larger groups weren’t as much of a problem as she could hide in the background and go unnoticed. But in an intimate group, that just wasn’t possible. She would be expected to join in on the conversations. Which she hated. Small talk made her uneasy; she never really knew what to say past ‘hi’. To top that off, she would have to wear a bathing suit in front of all those strangers—potentially hot strangers. At five-foot four, a hundred and twenty-two pounds, she wasn’t fat. Nor was she model skinny, opting to spend as little time in the gym as possible. The only thing that kept her trim between late night food runs and fruity cocktails was spending several nights a week dancing at the local nightclubs—the cocktails being the only reason to make such outings possible. It was a vicious cycle, but it kept her from becoming an introverted spinster with twenty-seven cats.
Maddie, please. I know you hate these kinds of things.
The way she saw it, the cons outweighed the pros by a landslide. But the look on her friend’s face... What time are you heading up there?
Meet at Wyatt’s house around ten.
Oh, I don’t think I’ll be able to make it.
If you’re trying to come up with a half-assed excuse not to come, so help me God, Maddie Wells I will be so angry with you.
No made-up excuse. I have the cable guy coming in the morning between eight and noon. Plus, I’m still getting over bronchitis.
Lila strummed her fingers against the small folding table. Seriously? The cable guy? Bronchitis? I haven’t heard you cough all night.
I’ve had the appointment for weeks. And the coughing comes and goes.
Fine. If you can’t go, I’m not going.
Lila!
What!
She stopped tapping the table and moved on to fiddling with the ribbon. I don’t want to hang with a bunch of boys I’ve never met. I hardly know Wyatt. What if I get there and I don’t even like him? I’ll be screwed.
Take your own car so you can leave whenever you want. Or if things get really bad, start flirting with one of his friends.
Maddie,
Lila whined, her eyes pleading for a little compassion. I’m being serious.
Sorry. I know you are.
Maddie leaned back in her chair. I guess spending the day at the lake wouldn’t be the worst way to spend a Saturday. Text Wyatt and make sure it’s alright if I tag along.
Thank you!
She grabbed her phone, fingers sliding over the screen.
Tell him that I might not be there right at ten if the cable guy decides to show up later rather than earlier.
Got it.
She looked at Maddie and beamed. Thank you so much! You won’t regret this.
MADDIE ARRIVED AT WYATT’S house at a quarter till eleven Saturday morning to find four enormous trucks parked in the driveway. The black Ford—Wyatt’s, she believed—was chock-full of ice chests. Empty beer boxes scattered the yard. How many people are going?
She’d never dated a man who drove a truck but she knew the type. They had a work hard, play hard mentality. Not afraid to get their hands dirty and too cool to give a damn what anyone thought. In theory, that sounded great. Reality was a different story. Several of her friends had dated men like that. After the initial southern charm wore off, most of those men ended up being pig-headed, womanizing jerks.
Lila sauntered out of Wyatt’s house, gorgeous as always. Her naturally sun-kissed skin was a perfect contrast to her turquoise cover-up. She waved Maddie out of the car before she turned back to the open door. Maddie’s here!
she called inside.
Maddie had called on the drive up to let Lila know she was close and to make sure the guys
