- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5The plot thickens nicely. Kepts me on edge till the end. Although the ending did seem a little rushed. Overall...pretty good read.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5One of Bennett's less celebrated novels, yet still a compelling and engaging story. The hero is Carl Foster, recently qualified as a doctor, who comes to London in the early years of the twentieth century to try and make his fortune. The novel opens with him wandering aimlessly around the West End, gazing in awe at the comings and goings of the wealthy end of society. Suddenly he sees a familiar face, his own cousin Sullivan Smith, now feted within society as the composer of a string of hit musical shows. The two meet on friendly terms, despite a long-term family feud (utterly disregarded by the two of them, and never alluded to again by the author).Smith invites the young doctor along to an opera performance that evening. This proves exquisitely fortuitous as during the interval the lead tenor, Signor Alresca, suffers a dreadful injury backstage. Foster is able to intervene with some efficacious first aid, which brings him to the attention of the opera management and the lead soprano, the beautiful Rosetta Rosa with whom Foster becomes immediately infatuated.Alresca is immensely grateful for Foster's timely intervention following the accident, and takes the young doctor under his wing. It becomes increasingly clear to Foster that Alresca is suffering from some profound though unspecified concern, and as soon as he is fit enough to move the tenor returns to his home in Bruges, taking the young doctor with him.Foster gradually becomes aware of the depth of Alresca's fears, and he too starts to wonder about a stern-faced, well-dressed elderly gentleman who seems to be dogging their footsteps. Things are about to take a serious turn...
